Machine translation (MT) as a field of application in computational linguistics can be characterized by different kinds of modeling. It is assumed that the kind of model (selections of types of knowledge) provides the framework in which the theoretical background of MT-approaches can be localized. The concept of “construction” is introduced in order to have a general perspective of comparison. Constructive principles can be specified with regard to the preferred selections concerning the different levels of representation and their links. It is shown that, on the one hand, generative grammar theories are an important source of the theoretical research in MT, but that, on the other hand, there is a need for the adaptation of theories which are relevant for the translation task. An example is given to demonstrate such an integration of the linguistic treatment of polylexicality (theory of wordformation on syntactic level) within the concept of the several representational levels of the EUROTRA-system.

TEXAN is a system of transfer-oriented text analysis. Its linguistic concept is based on a communicative approach within the framework of speech act theory. In this view texts are considered to be the result of linguistic actions. It is assumed that they control the selection of translation equivalents. The transtion of this concept of linguistic actions (text acts) to the model of computer analysis is performed by a context-free illocution grammar processing categories of actions and a propositional structure of states of affairs. The grammar which is related to a text lexicon provides the connection of these categories and the linguistic surface units of a single language.

... However, significant developments have been done in the field of machine translation, and pragmatics have been integrated as additional abilities of machine translation. As a result, issues significant for machine translation are solving ambiguities and choosing appropriate structural analyses, as well as pragmatics (Rothkegel 1986): ...
