Stellenbosch Papers in Linguistics Plus

The present study is dedicated to the emergence of an asymmetrical serial verb construction (SVC) with the verb wziąć in Polish. By making use of a dynamic prototype-driven approach to linguistic categorization and by reviewing the historical corpora that range from the first Old Polish texts in the 14th c. until the end of the New Polish period in 1939, the authors conclude that the wziąć SVC has resulted from the fusion of the original conjunctively coordinated (CC) clauses. Although two types of clause-fusion mechanisms have operated during the grammaticalization of the wziąć SVCs, their contribution to this process has been dissimilar. The evolution from the syndetic CC with the coordinator i to the wziąć SVC via a pseudo-coordinated (PC) stage (i.e., the wziąć-i PC) has constituted a faster and stronger drift, while the more direct evolution originating in the asyndetic CC with wziąć has been slower and less pervasive.

This article outlines the theoretical basis of describing morphosyntactic problems in The Dictionary of Proper Uses of Language. The main point was to 1) show the principles of the reference grammatical model and 2) to describe the main phases of the procedure of language facts evaluation. In the first case, we refer to the dependency syntax model, which reflects the relationships between the elements of syntactic structures through assigning them to a specific type of binding. In the second case, in contrast to the traditional nor-mative model, the importance of the frequency of the specific syntactic structures is much more underlined. Ultimately, the combination of prevalence and frequency of language elements allows for constructing an objective assessment procedure.

The paper describes the process of adapting general Polish lexicon for the purpose of creating legal texts in contemporary Polish. The aim of the article was to completethe existing descriptions of formal mechanisms observed while modifying the original vocabulary. We distinguished and described two basic transformation types: 1) changes in the possible collocations, 2) formal transformations not resulting from a semantic change or being the result of a meaning shift.Compared to the existing analyses, the paper has the advantage of having described transformations not related to meaning changes, which involve 1) replacing an elementof the original expression with a different lexical unit, 2) eliminating parts of the original expression, and 3) completing the original unit with a new lexical element, not existing in dictionaries of general Polish. The paper shows that formal and semantic modifications of general Polish lexicon are an important factor allowing for the enrichment of legal vocabulary. They may also be an obstacle, making it difficult for non-specialists to decode legal texts.

The article discusses the linguistic status of specialist vocabulary, as well as the procedures used for its identification and description. Our theoretical analysis is based on a selection of penal law texts. The purpose of the article is to define the notion of legal text unit and to prove its relevance for linguistic research. The paper presents the relationships between a legal text unit, a language unit, a collocation and a term. We sug-gest that in order to identify specialist language units, the analysis should be based on a corpus consisting only of texts representing each particular field. Finally, the article discusses the basic mechanisms used for transforming general language units into legal language units.

Abstrakt The article has verified a hypothesis suggesting that the sequences mentioned in the title and similar to them are constrained syntactic groups, i.e., they do not form a regular combination of simple signs. The verification has been conducted on the basis of a three-stage procedure taking into account the semantic features and inner qualities of the studied expressions, namely, their composition as well as the structural and linear links between segments. It has been indicated that the components of the studied sequences jointly express meaning which can be considered as a form of perlocution: ‘something changes within fragments of time undergoing observation whose measure is determined by a variable component’. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that the two components of a sequence that can be exchanged can be realized not only by standard measures of time (second, minute, hour, week), but also by nouns referring to events (match, meeting, term). Also, there is a presentation of the basic limitations in the realization of a variable component and a mutual linear arrangement of variable and constant components. A characteristic of the expressions of the type from week to week, from novel to novel, from match to match is supplemented by the remarks concerning their external syntax.

... pseudocoordination, decir (n = 6) was the verb that was most frequently employed as the V2, followed by dar 'give' (n = 3 Lastly, another infrequent yet noteworthy pattern in the dataset was the variable use of the conjunction y in agarrar y pseudocoordination. Although exceptional in Spanish, omission of 'and' in pseudocoordination is attested in (especially Brazilian) Portuguese and some other languages (Andrason et al. 2022;Giusti, Di Caro & Ross 2022: 3;Ross 2021). There were four cases in which V1 and V2 did not co-occur with the conjunction y 'and', as (20) and (21) This usage highlights the fact that despite limited use in Northern Belizean Spanish, agarrar y 'take and' pseudocoordination is compatible with Spanish/English code-switching and innovative syntactic patterns; namely, doubling of the subject personal pronoun, lack of tense agreement 19 between V1 and V2, and variable use of the copulative conjunction y 'and'. ...

... Z tego też powodu prowadzone tu rozważania wpisują się w dotychczasowe analizy, obejmujące -z jednej strony -własności składniowej płaszczyzny takich wypowiedzi widziane z perspektywy normatywnej, z drugiej zaś problemy konstruowania złożonych leksykalnie ciągów -kolokacji specjalistycznych (zob.
