Mustard Prosperity: Assessing Economic Realities among KVK Beneficiary and Non-beneficiary Farmers in Samba District of Jammu Division

Background: The study was conducted purposively in Samba district during the year 2020-21 because KVK, Samba has laid maximum number of Frontline Demonstrations (FLDs) under its Cluster Frontline Demonstration Programme during 2019-20. Methods: A list of 166 mustard growing beneficiaries was collected from KVK Samba. Out of the available list, 60 number of mustard growing beneficiary were selected randomly. Equal numbers of non-beneficiary mustard growing farmers were also selected from the representative/adjoining villages. Total sample size comprised of 120 respondents. Results: It shows that average seed cost of the beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries were 411.66 and 310.83 Rs./ha, the average cost of fungicide of the beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries were 291.41 and 171.46 Rs./ha for Albugo occidentalis and Erisiphe cruciferam, average cost of urea of the beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries were 614.33 and 574 Rs./ha. The study also shows that total cost of the beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries were 311173.67 and 29596.33 Rs./ha. The B:C ratio of the beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries were 1.97:1 and 1.34:1, respectively.


Impact of Krishi Vigyan Kendra Frontline Demonstrations on Mustard Productivity in Jammu Region, J&K (UT)

The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) cluster frontline demonstrations (FLDs) are essential in encouraging farmers to adopt advanced agricultural practices by showcasing proven technologies in real field conditions. These demonstrations help bridge the gap between agricultural innovations developed in research institutions and their adoption by small-scale farmers. This study evaluates the impact of FLDs provided by KVK Samba in Jammu and Kashmir on mustard productivity. Based on yield data and farmer feedback, the study reveals a significant increase in mustard yields among participants due to the adoption of improved cultivation methods, better seed varieties, and efficient resource management. The average productivity for beneficiaries increased by approximately 40 per cent from 8.76 quintals to 12.25 quintals after FLDs, marking a statistically significant improvement. Additionally, beneficiaries experienced a slight increase in average sale prices from 5075.00 rupees to 5166.66 rupees after FLDs. The study also notes key changes included reduced thinning, optimized fertilizer application, and improved seed management, contributing to higher yields and enhanced crop management. These findings underscore the vital role of extension services in facilitating the adoption of advanced farming techniques and provide useful insights for policymakers and agricultural agencies focused on boosting mustard production and improving farmer livelihoods in Jammu and Kashmir.


The Impact of Mid-Day Meal Scheme on the Nutritional and Educational Status among Rural School Children in Bihar, India

In India, in particular in rural regions, the Mid-Day Meal Scheme (MDMS) has been crucial in treating malnutrition and improving access to education for schoolchildren. The Mid-Day Meal Scheme's implementation and efficacy in the Bihar district of Arwal are both investigated in this study. this study highlights how significantly the Mid-Day Meal Scheme has improved the nutritional and academic outcomes of rural schoolchildren in Bihar while also highlighting areas that need more focus for programme improvement. A representative sample of rural schools was used to gather data using a quantitative methodology. By using many sorts of indicators, including attendance, dropout rates, and academic achievement, the study evaluated the nutritional and educational status of children. The result illustrate the benefits of the programme by showing improvements in height, weight, classroom hunger, enrollment, retention, attendance, and a decrease in dropout rates. On the other hand, assessments regarding academic ability and attention span were less favourable. When parents and instructors were asked about their opinions of the classroom hunger and attendance, both groups of people said that things had much improved. On the subject of academic achievement and attention span, differences were identified. The report highlights the need for additional study to fully comprehend the Mid-Day Meal Scheme's long-term effect.

Agricultural extension services are important for enhancing agricultural productivity, food security, and rural development. Examination of future and research needs highlights the significance of innovative approaches and emerging technologies, such as digital agriculture, precision farming, artificial intelligence, blockchain technology, and biotechnology, in transforming extension services. These technologies offer the potential to optimize resource use, increase yields, and improve supply chain transparency. Comprehensive impact assessments, including randomized controlled trials and mixed-methods approaches, are essential for evaluating the effectiveness of extension programs and understanding their long-term impacts on productivity, food security, and livelihoods. Supportive policy development and advocacy efforts are crucial for creating an enabling environment that promotes innovation, collaboration, and sustainable practices. This includes establishing regulatory frameworks, providing financial incentives, and integrating extension services into national development plans. Cross-disciplinary research and international collaboration are key to addressing the complex challenges facing agriculture, fostering the exchange of knowledge and best practices, and enhancing the capacity of national extension systems. Interdisciplinary research teams and systems thinking approaches can provide comprehensive solutions to agricultural challenges, while international research networks and development assistance programs can facilitate the transfer of appropriate technologies and practices. South-South cooperation offers additional opportunities for knowledge exchange and technology transfer between developing countries. By addressing these future directions and research needs, agricultural extension services can effectively contribute to sustainable agricultural development, improved livelihoods for farmers, and greater resilience to climate change. This approach will ensure that extension services remain responsive to the evolving challenges and opportunities in the agricultural sector, ultimately promoting global food security and economic growth.


Socio-Economic Analysis of Cauliflower Growers in Jammu Region of Jammu and Kashmir (UT)

A comprehensive investigation was undertaken in 2020-2021 in the Jammu district of the Jammu region, Jammu and Kashmir (Union Territory), India employing a descriptive study design. The primary objective was to discern the socio-economic characteristics of the cauliflower cultivators. Utilizing a multistage sampling methodology, a total of 160 cauliflower growers constituted the study sample. The results indicate that a substantial proportion of respondents (37%) fall within the middle-age category, holding matriculation level education (41%). The majority of respondents (54%) reside in joint family setups and agriculture emerges as the predominant occupation (76%). The majority of cauliflower growers in the study area have marginal farm sizes, primarily irrigated using canal water. While several critical information sources were conveniently located near the study area, including the agriculture office and input stores, access to others such as the SAU, KVK and the market was more distant. Respondents occasionally sought information from nearby sources in their villages.
