Introduction: In the last years, confusing or misleading use of the term called miracle or magic diets, using to weight loss treatment, has increased, along with several classification of them. Objectives: The purpose of this narrative review is to discuss miracle slimming diets and proposal new term and new classification for these diets. Methods: A narrative review up to September 2021 was carried out in the PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Knowledge. Furthermore, this strategy was complemented with a comprehensive search of the ‘grey’ literature [7] based in four different searching strategies: i) grey literature databases, ii) customized Google search engines, iii) targeted websites, and iv) consultation with contact experts. Results: Our proposal is to use the new concept called hazardous slimming diets defined as diets that propose rapid weight loss (> 1 kg/week), to be performed effortlessly, without the super-vision of a medical/nutritional professional, excessive energy restrictions and/or exclusion from the diet of food or nutrients for the body. Furthermore, the development of a new algorithm reflected as is possible to classify the diet as non-effective, hazardous and effective diet. Conclusions: Our review could help to classify and develop a new terminology about the miracle slimming diets focusing in the knowledge to guarantee the quality in the treatments for weight loss.

On 11 March 2020, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO). This study focuses on a narrative review about the illness during the first year of the pandemic in relation to obesity. Databases were used to search studies published up to 8 December 2020. In total, 4430 articles and other scientific literature were found, and 24 articles were included in this one-year narrative review. The mean BMI value of severe COVID-19 patients ranged from 24.5 to 33.4 kg/m2, versus <18.5 to 24.3 kg/m2 for non-severe patients. Articles using the terms obesity or overweight without indicating the BMI value in these patients were common, but this is not useful, as the anthropometric parameters, when not defined by this index, are confusing due to the classification being different in the West compared to among Asian and Korean criteria-based adults. We proposed a new term, called COVID obesity, to define the importance of this anthropometric parameter, among others, in relation with this pandemic.

Introducción: Los pacientes sometidos a Trasplante de Células Madre Hematopoyéticas o trasplante de médula padecen varias complicaciones nutricionales. El objetivo del estudio fue realizar una descripción prospectiva en estos pacientes.Material y métodos: Se reclutaron 14 pacientes con una edad media de 48,0±9,8 años. Resultados: El 28,6% padecía sobrepeso, el 14,3% obesidad y el 57,1% tenía un peso normal, con una evoluciónentre -0,3±0,3 kg/m2 (normopeso) hasta -3,1±0,2 kg/m2 (obesidad). Se observó una pérdida de peso variable, de hasta 7,3±0,7% en pacientes con mayor Índice de Masa Corporal (IMC). La composición corporal también empeoró al alta, con una evolución de la circunferencia braquial de -1,7±0,4 cm en trasplantes alogénicos y -2±4,5 cm en trasplantes autólogos. Un 42,9% de hombres y 28,6% de mujeres eran dados de alta con un Índice de Masa Libre de Grasa (IMLG) por debajo de las recomendaciones, incrementándose desde el ingreso en hombres (desde un 14,3%). Se observa una pérdida de fuerza muscular, en trasplantes alogénicos de -5,0±1,5 kg en el caso de hombres, y -3,0±0,5 kg en mujeres; en autólogos, de -5 kg y -4 kg respectivamente. Sobre síntomas, al inicio existía una alta prevalencia de vómitos (71,4%), náuseas (42,9%) o saciedad temprana (57,1%); durante la hospitalización, destaca la saciedad temprana (92,9%), náuseas (71,4%), vómitos (71,4%), disgeusia (57,1%), diarrea (50%) y anorexia (50%). Conclusiones: Los pacientes admitidos para trasplante de médula ósea están aparentemente bien nutridos, y existe un deterioro durante la hospitalización; parece adecuado implementar estrategias dietéticas durante la hospitalización para optimizar la ingesta y prevenir la malnutrición.

On March 11, 2020, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO). This review focuses on where the body mass index (BMI) value can be used as a tool to evaluate the risk of development and/or aggravation of this disease. Databases were used to search studies published up to April 18, 2020. In total, 4285 articles and other scientific literature were found, and twelve articles were included in this systematic review. The mean BMI value of severe COVID-19 patients ranged from 24.5 to 33.4 kg/m2, versus 22.0 to 24.3 kg/m2 for non-severe patients Articles using the terms obesity or overweight, without indicating the BMI value, in these patients were common, but this is not useful as the nutritional status, when not defined by this index, is confusing due to the classification being different in the West compared to among,, Asian and Korean criteria-based adults. Furthermore, the use of BMI is important during this pandemic, as it should be applied to nutritional support therapy during hospitalization of infected patients, as well as being considered in the home confinement population.
