Alexandre Guttmann’s scientific contributions

The aim of this chapter is to examine the emergence of platform cooperatives and discuss the role that commons can play in their development. The commons are deeply engaged in the daily action of platform cooperatives promoting environment protection, developing new digital tools, and creating a community-based management. The conceptions of commons have evolved in the last decades and their contributions to cooperative economics are multiple. In this chapter, we delve into the analysis of different worldwide cases explaining how commons and cooperatives can be intertwined to create a new type of organization that we call commons-oriented platform cooperatives. To analyze this new type of organization, we develop five case studies exemplifying this notion of commons-oriented platform cooperatives each in their own different ways but with the same objective of building and nurturing digital commons for their socially useful mission.
