Steward, Inc., has carried out a conversion from a functional layout to cellular layout. Reductions in batch size and inventory levels significantly improve many of the performance measures. Cellular manufacturing, or group technology, has reduced the company's scrap to 2%, provided customers with prompt service, produced quality parts, and made significant profits. However, the drawbacks of the existing cell formation methods are projected to be machine shortages, machine selection, and achieving cell flexibility.

... Compared to other manufacturing systems, cellular manufacturing has many advantages, including improved product quality, reduced setup times, reduced travel distance, and thus improved productivity (Imran et al., 2017;Jabal-Ameli et al., 2013;Muthiah and Huang, 2006). These benefits have been identified through analytical studies, simulation studies, surveys, and actual implementations (Askin and Standridge, 1993;Burbidge and Dale, 1984;Collet and Spicer, 1995;Howard and Newman, 1993;Hyer, 1984;Hyer and Wemmerlov, 2002;Levasseur et al., 1995;Singh and Rajamani, 1996;Wemmerlov and Hyer, 1989;Wemmerlov and Johnson, 1997). As an example of the reported benefits of cellular manufacturing in terms of reducing travel distance, one case study reported that two products comprising 11 subassemblies travelled a total distance of 64 km. ...
