In the Sultanate of Oman, data from the late 1990s showed total discharges to the sea by treated effluents from Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) of 250,000 m3/day, equivalent to 91,250 x 10 3 m3/year from 8 STPs. Des tortues d'eau douce, au bord de cours d'eau contaminés par des produits chimiques et des métaux lourds tels que strontium 90, 137Cs, cobalt 60 (60Co) et mercure, présentaient des ruptures d'ADN à un brin (mutations) (Meyers-Shone and Watson 1990). D'autres études ont mis en évidence les effets de la contamination par des métaux lourds sur les populations de tortues marines : bioaccumulation de métaux lourds au fur et à mesure que la tortue vieillit (Sakai et al. 2000b), mutation des bébés tortues due à la présence de 137Cs dans des algues et des herbiers marins (Vanda et al. 2006), et produits chimiques affectant la différenciation sexuelle de reptiles tels que les tortues marines dont le sexe est déterminé en fonction de la température (Keller and McClennan-Green 2004). Les métaux ont tendance à se concentrer dans le foie, les reins et le muscle (Sakai et al. 2000b) et ont été décelés dans le sang et le tissu de la carapace, reflétant les niveaux constatés dans les organes et tissus internes (Wang 2005; Presti et al. 1999). ...
... As the region experience high temperature and salinity, desalination plants aggravate the continuous discharge of highly saline brine leading to serious ecological damage. In late 1990s, data showed a total discharge by treated effluents (domestic and industrial) of more than 250,000 m 3 /day and this are discharged from various Sewage Treatment Plant along the Coast of Oman (Al Muzaini et al., 2004). By-products of these discharges are suspected to lead the changes in temperature, salinity along with the physical and chemical composition of the sea. ...
