Demand-side management relies on the flexibility of consumers’ load to avoid electrical network issues, including grid congestion. Recent advances in smart grid systems (also called Energy Internet) allow using demand-side management reactive strategies based on the dynamical shedding of residential consumers appliances. Both centralized and decentralized approaches are considered in literature, depending on the considered system size, but only few contributions consider the potential impact of the telecommunication network on their performance. In this paper, we conduct a comparative analysis on a realistic scenario based on representative power consumption time series of a residential power system. Our results show that latency may have a significant impact on energy management strategies in terms of performance for the smart grid, and that it should be considered when designing such strategies.

Simulation-oriented research requires precise and validated simulators. Each community has its set of preferred and widely adopted software tools. Some works are multidomain and require the use of dedicated tools and semantic of each domain to produce largely accepted results. In this work, we demonstrate how to realize co-simulation between power system networks, telecommunication networks and distributed computing resources. The demo will show a basic scenario to explicit the relevance of such a combination.

Fog computing was designed to support the specific needs of latency-critical applications such as augmented reality, and IoT applications which produce massive volumes of data that are impractical to send to faraway cloud data centers for analysis. However this also created new opportunities for a wider range of applications which in turn impose their own requirements on future fog computing platforms.
