The design of methods for the mining of recently discovered deep-ocean hydrothermally deposited polymetallic sulfides requires a knowledge of their geotechnical engineering properties. The results of such a study of a small number of irregular, surficial chunk samples are presented. Based on the density, porosity, durability, hardness, compressive strength, and cutting properties of the samples, the most feasible method for mining would be some type of cutterhead and hydraulic lifting system. Further studies are required to determine how representative the surficial deposits are of mechanical properties within the basal mound. Refs.

... However, the bulk dry densities of sulphide chimneys, crusts, and sediments from other occurrences are much lower. Sulphide chimneys from the East Pacific Rise have a dry density of only 1-2 g=cm 3 and an in situ water content of at least 25-50 per cent (Crawford et al. 1984). Higher densities due to compaction, open-space filling, and hydrothermal recrystallization of the sulphides might be expected in the interiors of mounds, as observed at TAG, but it is clear that these effects are not uniform. ...
