... The emergence of the Gulf states and their sports investment strategies has led to contestation in the sporting world. The main dispute is around the notion of 'sportswashing', whereby commentators understand the massive investments of these 'new' authoritarian states to be a deliberate tactic to distract from human rights abuses in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE (see Ettinger 2023;Grix et al. 2023;Skey 2022;Fruh et al. 2022;Crossley and Woolf 2024).
