This study seeks to explore the effect of mobile applications, particularlyWhatsApp, on learning English language in ESP context. The major objective is to examine whether using mobile phone applications has an impact on police Emirati cadets' performance by investigating the influence such teaching technique can have on their English language competence; how mobile-based applications are perceived as a language learning tool and what opinions police Emirati cadets havehad after going throughthe mobile phone learning experience. This study is conducted on 25 cadets from Police Science Academy, UAE. A cadets' questionnairewas the toolusedfor collecting data. The results of the study indicate the effectiveness of using the mobile application WhatsApp in enhancing cadets' English competences and motivating them to learn English language effectively.

This study aims at determining the English language needs of Emirati police cadets. The study was conducted on 70 cadets from Sharjah Police Science Academy, UAE. A six-part questionnaire was developed to identify what the cadets perceived as their needs from their English as a Foreign Language (EFL) course. The results of the study show that improving their listening, speaking and writing skills were ranked as most important by the cadets, and they also stressed an urgent need for studying English for security purposes (e.g., the language needed to enhance their job performance and their chances of promotion). Relevant interpretations and recommendations are offered.


Exploring Emirati Police Cadets' Motivation for Learning English language

This research aims at Exploring Emirati police cadets' motivation for learning the English language. The current study is conducted on 30 cadets from Police Science Academy, UAE. A two-part questionnaire is developed by the researcher to explore the level and type of English language motivation of the police cadets: instrumental: the desire to learn a language for the practical benefits it brings or integrative: to get familiar with a language so as to cooperate and interact with native speaker easily. The descriptive data from the returned questionnaire were reported using the SPSS program. The results of the study showed that the Emirati police cadets are highly motivated revealing slightly more integrative motivation factors in learning the English language (M=4.02) than instrumental factors (M=3.94). Concerning the integrative motivation, cadets were highly motivated regarding the statements "English is the major language of communication among people of the world" (M=4.57) and "Studying English enables me to meet and communicate with those who speak it" (M=4.55).Also, cadets were instrumentally motivated as in the statements "English language mostly used in work fields" (M=4.83) and "Learning English is very important for traveling abroad to continue my studies in an English-speaking country" (M=4.65).


Enhancing EFL Vocabulary Acquisition through E-mail Exchanges

This study examined the effect of authentic email exchanges on foreign language learners' vocabulary acquisition. 20 students from Emirates Canadian University College were involved in exchanging authentic emails for three months. Two instruments were developed by the investigator; pre-and post-vocabulary tests, and a questionnaire to examine students' attitudes towards authentic email exchanges. Study results showed that exchanging authentic e-mails contributed significantly to enhancing students' vocabulary. In addition, authentic e-mail exchanges helped the participants develop positive attitudes toward foreign language learning. Relevant interpretations and recommendations were offered.
