... Public interest litigation in the United States and in India have been compared as to standing to sue, non-adversarial litigation, and the relationship ofrights and remedies (Cunningham, 1987). Alternative approaches to remedying past discrimination on the basis of race and caste in India, South Africa and the United States have been explored (Cunningham, 1997). During academic visits in the late 1990s, Indian colleagues have sought interaction about research topics (medical waste disposal law, means of combatting corruption among police, death penalty for juvenile offenders, creation of battered women's shelters, and civil protection orders, for example) and access to research resources (books, listservs, websites 24 ). ...
