Collaborative Workshop on Evidence-based Policy-making. Pretoria, South Africa, 19 - 20 November 2008 This handbook summarises the background behind, format of and lessons learned from a Collaborative Workshop on Evidence-based Policy-making that was held in November 2008. The workshop was organised by CSIR and funded by the UK's Department of Food, Environment and Tourism; and South Africa's Departments of Environment and Tourism and Science and Technology. Two international and two CSIR facilitators ran the workshop, which was attended by a select list of scientists and policy-makers United Kingdom’s (UK’s) Department of Food, Rural and Environmental Aff airs (DEFRA), South Africa’s Department of Environment and Tourism (DEAT) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST)

... A notable event signalling the department's intensified efforts was a collaborative workshop held in November 2008. Close to fifty participants from twelve organisations including DEA and environment-and science-related ministries, universities, research councils and SANBI met to discuss the question "of what existing, emerging and new evidence policy-makers in South Africa require to inform the policy-making process and to solve complex policy issues which have implications for the environment" (Funke et al., 2009).
