... The Western Grebe (Aechmophorus occidentalis), a Species of Special Concern in Canada, has decreased in both distribution and abundance throughout its North American range (COSEWIC 2014). Declines in abundance have been noted in British Columbia, where the species is on the Red List as imperiled (Burger 1997, British Columbia Conservation Data Centre 2015, and in California (Robison et al. 2015), including areas that once had some of the largest concentrations of wintering Western Grebes (Burger 1997, Puget Sound Action Team 2007.
