Warragamba Dam is Sydney's largest and most important dam, supplying approximately 70% of the city's long-term water requirements. Re-assessment of the design flood for the 137 m high, 27 year old concrete gravity dam in 1982 has resulted in the NSW Government announcing a priority program for strengthening work and spillway augmentation at the dam. Fundamental to the decision to increase the spillway capacity at a cost of up to 15M for flood mitigation improvement), was the assessment of a high incremental flood hazard potential and an associated unacceptable risk of failure during major floods.
