The total internal reflection electro-optic deflector/modulator has so far been limited by the subdiffraction patterns that appear in the far field when light is transmitted through the device with zero applied voltage. This paper isolates the causes of these subdiffraction patterns and describes a simple means of removing them from the far field without affecting the performance of the device. The results of measurements taken at zero applied voltage are included and give an indication of the order of this effect.

New developments of the electro-optic light deflector using total internal reflection of the light are given. By arranging the electrodes in the manner described it has been possible to deflect over 80% of the transmitted light from the zero to either of the first orders. The arrangement is ideally suited for further miniaturization and it is anticipated that switching between the orders will eventually be possible with an applied voltage of only a few volts. Suitable applications include beam steering, multi-stage deflectors and information processing.

The use of the internal reflection modulator has been extended to the XDP class of crystals and proposals are given for which are suitable for this modulator to be used as an internal laser cavity switch. Experimental results obtained using the modulator are included.

A low-cost fluorescence temperature sensor using the decay-time principle has been constructed, using a milimeter size probe element, a dedicated microprocessor and simple logic circuitry with LED excitation of the material. Results in the region from minus 50 to plus 200 degree C have been reported with a approx. plus or minus 2 degree C accuracy using Q100 neodymium glass and comparisons made with commercially available sensors. Extension of the work to higher temperature measurement is discussed.

A two-wavelength combination source can be used to enhance the measurement precision in a white light interferometric system. However, for efficient operation, an optimum wavelength combination has to be chosen. In this paper, a detailed theoretical analysis showing the existence of an optimum wavelength difference in a two-wavelength combination source is presented, where such a wavelength difference forms the basis to construct an optimum wavelength combination. This theoretical analysis is useful in the process of fringe analysis in white light interferometry.

The performance of a Faraday current sensing element with single medium layer coatings with potential for use at high voltage is reported, and the principle and the design parameters of the polarization-preserving, totally reflecting, single medium layer are given. The performance of the sensing element is demonstrated, showing a sensitivity of approximately 90% of the theoretically achievable maximum for an ideal case, a ratio error of 0.33% over a 7 h stability period and a 21 dB EMI immunity. Some of the advantages of this design are considered and discussed.

A fluorescence-based intrinsic fire alarm sensor system for determining local regions of high temperature has been demonstrated in this paper, the signal processing basis of which is using a correlation coefficient ratio scheme. Two separate sensor configurations have been illustrated, one of which is to use short, single lengths of fibre spliced into a network and the other a long single length of doped fibre, using typically Nd or Er doped fibre materials. The results show that the correlation coefficient ratio, R, is sensitive to the temperature excursion and will become smaller than unity and decrease with the increase of the local temperature. It is also been shown that the ratio R is related to the intensity of the fluorescence coming from the section of the fibre exposed to the high temperature from a fire.
