Israel and Iran continued to improve their military hardware to meet the existing political challenges of the region and overcome potential threats from each other. Israel had been improving its arsenals by successfully testing its Arrow anti-ballistic missile system and Iran was taking similar steps by sending warships to the Mediterranean for the first time in 30 years. Israel tested the Arrow anti-ballistic missile system at a US Navy firing range off the coast of California on February 22, 2011. The test was conducted against a target launched from a mobile platform, representing potential ballistic missile threats facing the country. Iranian leaders celebrated the ousting of Hosni Mubarak, their longtime rival from Egypt by sending two warships through the Suez Canal, as Israel was developing its defensive capabilities and monitoring the changes in the region.
