Early Taming of the Cat in Cyprus

It is generally accepted that cats were first domesticated in ancient Egypt ([ 1 ][1]–[ 3 ][2]), at the latest by the 20th to 19th century B.C. (Middle Kingdom, 12th dynasty) ([ 4 ][3]). However, several finds from Cyprus suggest that the origins of cat taming were earlier. A cat mandible at the

Domestication and taming. Archaeozoologists generally use the word domestication
when they have good evidence for morphological modifications such as the decrease
of the general size or the shortening of the face and tooth raw. However,
morphological modifications may not appear for some considerable time after the
original association with man. We use the term ‘taming’ for the early history of the
domestic cat when no morphological modification is visible. In addition this term,
which has also been used by Malek (S1) for the same stage of domestication, fits well
the status of cat as an ‘exploiting captive’.
Cultural situation of Shillourokambos. The cultural characters of the late 9
th
millennium Shillourokambos archaeological assemblages are very similar to those of
the mainland for the same period. Indeed, it has now been established that Cyprus was
settled by Neolithic farmers from the continent who brought with them both crops and
herds (S2, S3).
Brief description of the human burial. The sub-circular (55 x 60 cm) grave was
situated in the upper part of the archaeological deposits, just under the 25/30 cm thick
arable ploughed earth. It had been dug into the remains of a mud building which dates
to the middle phase of the occupation of Shillourokambos. It contained the complete
skeleton in primary position of a human of 30 years of age or older; the body, which
had partly collapsed during decomposition, had probably been buried in a bag, in a
semi-sitting position, facing West; the arms were crossed against the chest and his legs
completely folded. The list of the ten ceremonial items is as follows: a marine shell, a
stone pendant, a very uncommon discoid flint scraper, two small polished axes (one of
them broken), a pumice stone, a fragment of ochre, a large flint piercing tool, and
several non-retouched flint blades and bladelets. This is the only burial with such a
high number of offerings for the whole Preceramic and Aceramic Neolithic in Cyprus.
Description and contents of the small shell pit. The circular pit was 8 cm wide and 4
cm deep. It contained 20 complete shells of Columbella rustica, 3 of Nassarius
gibbosulus, 1 of Cerithium cf. vulgatum. One shell of each species had been

artificially pierced; the remaining 21 shells had not been worked. All the 24 shells had
been arranged around a central raw fragment of a green soft stone used for jewellery
(picrolite).
Description of the cat grave and skeleton. The grave was oval (43 x 25 cm) and ca. 15
cm deep. It was dug into and filled with the same archaeological layer as the human
burial, at the same level and 20 cm away from its southeastern edge. A small
asymmetric mound of sediment all along the North edge of the grave was probably
composed of the packed down-products of the excavation of the grave, attesting man-
made excavation. The cat skeleton was complete, except the last lumbar vertebra,
sacrum, pelvis, possible baculum, tail bones and a few elements of the limb
extremities. The missing parts were all situated at the highest level, suggesting that the
complete body had been buried and that the uppermost parts were destroyed by
ploughing; the skeleton laid on its left side, the head to the West and the back to the
South, i.e., in the same orientation as that of the human skeleton; the head was bent
backwards in relation to the neck; fore and rear limbs were grouped under the
stomach, respectively backwards and forwards stretched, but the removal of the limb
extremities precludes any explanation to this peculiar arrangement.
The finds have been withdrawn as a block, for laboratory excavation and casting.
The entire skeleton was articulated, a small amount of movement to the anatomical
arrangement being due to collapse during the decomposition process. There is no
indication about the origin of the death. Microscopic examination did not reveal any
cut or burn marks. The absence of significant quantities of sediments between the
right and left rib series indicates that the thoracic cavity had not been opened before
the burial.
Anatomic and taxonomic characters of the cat. Because the pelvic region is missing,
the gender of the animal cannot be known. Large size suggests male rather than
female. Full erupted cheek teeth associated to un-fussed femur and tibia distal
epiphyses indicate that the animal died at about 8 months of age, i.e., young but with
its adult size. Though severely damaged, the skull was sufficiently well preserved to
allow a good determination of the species among the different small felids of Western
Asia, according to the morphological criteria which allow clear-cut distinctions
between them (S4). The small size and the shape of the tympani bullae allowed us to
eliminate Felis margarita, which is smaller than Felis silvestris. In a lateral view, the
dorsal profile of the fronto-nasal line falls abruptly with an angle of more than 45°, as

it does with F. silvestris, and does not make an open angle (less than 25°) as it does
with Felis chaus (criteria 33, S4). In addition, the orbital lower rim is flattened,
enlarged and medially inflected as with F. silvestris lybica, whereas it is not in F.
chaus (criteria 44, S4).
Post-cranial and cranial measurements fall in the upper half of the range of
variation of size of the Western Asian Felis silvestris lybica (S5, S6) (Fig. S1), i.e.,
much smaller than the smaller F. chaus which have been measured in Israel (S6), the
length of the upper P4 of which are never under 14.10 mm (N = 23). The smaller
values in Anatolia for F. chaus are not less than 12.7 mm (N = 9; Helmer, pers.
comm.). The dimensions of the cheek teeth and mandible are slightly larger than the
other ones at Shillourokambos and Khirokitia (Fig. S2).
Lengths of the limbs long bones are much larger than the ones of historical and
present-day domestic cats. For example, the greatest length of the humerus is 119.5
mm, which is even longer than the humerus of the very large male roman domestic cat
described at Quseir (Red Sea Coast, S7), and exceeds the maximal length of series of
European domestic cat (Table S1).

The domestic cat (Felis catus) descends from the African wildcat subspecies Felis lybica lybica. Its global distribution alongside humans testifies to its successful adaptation to anthropogenic environments. Uncertainty remains regarding whether domestic cats originated in the Levant, Egypt or elsewhere in its natural range, and on the timing and circumstances of their dispersal into Europe. By analysing 87 ancient and modern cat genomes, we demonstrate that domestic cats did not spread to Europe with Neolithic farmers, as previously thought. Conversely, our results suggest that they were introduced to Europe over the last 2,000 years, most likely from North Africa. We also demonstrate that a separate earlier (1st millennium BCE) introduction of wildcats from Northwest Africa originated the present-day wild population in Sardinia.

The relationship between humans and their pets has long fascinated researchers, particularly in exploring how attachment varies according to the type of pet. Cats and dogs exhibit unique behavioral and social traits that influence the dynamics of human–pet relationships. Moreover, specific human characteristics have been found to affect this attachment. Our study examines the human factors that influence pet attachment among cat and dog owners in the Basque Country, located in northern Spain. By investigating these elements, our research aims to enhance the understanding of how human factors shape the human–animal bond. The study included a total of 202 participants, of whom 66.8% were dog owners, and 74.8% identified as women, with ages ranging from 18 to 74 years. Consistent with many previous studies, our results indicate that attachment is generally stronger with dogs compared to cats and that owner’s characteristics such as being female, younger, not living with children, and the amount of time spent with pets on weekends are linked to stronger attachments to pets.

Neste artigo discute-se a origem dos cães e gatos e os processos envolvidos em sua domesticação, evidenciando como a alimentação desempenhou um papel crucial ao longo da história dessas espécies. Aliado a isso, discute-se a evolução da relação entre a humanidade e cães e gatos, analisando os fatores que contribuíram para a sua transição de animais utilitários para apoio emocional aos seres humanos. O surgimento da indústria de alimentos para animais de companhia foi impulsionado pela necessidade em fornecer produtos estáveis e de maior qualidade, adaptando-se e crescendo juntamente a inclusão dessas espécies como membros da família. Atualmente, o ramo pet food representa aproximadamente 80% do faturamento da indústria pet no Brasil, que somou cerca de 41,96 bilhões de reais somente em 2022. Este expressivo crescimento vai de comum acordo com o interesse progressivo por parte dos tutores em oferecer opções mais saudáveis e alternativas de alimento para seus animais. Com isso, surgem novas tendências, tais como a utilização de algumas espécies de insetos, que têm sido propostos como uma fonte protéica alimentar de alta qualidade, eficiente e sustentável, apresentando-se como uma das soluções para essa problemática. Ainda assim, é importante que se faça uma análise criteriosa dessa nova tendência, buscando estabelecer suas vantagens e desvantagens sob o ponto de vista nutricional e de segurança alimentar.

VKM has evaluated to what extent keeping of cats pose a risk to biodiversity in Norway. Risks were assessed separately for threats to biodiversity from direct predation, indirect (non-lethal) effects, competition with other wildlife and spread of infectious organisms. VKM also assessed the risk of reduced animal welfare related to the keeping of domestic cats, both for the cats and their prey. In addition, VKM has assessed a range of risk-reducing measures aimed at minimizing the risk for negative impacts on biodiversity and animal welfare. Overall, VKM find that the risk of negative impact on vulnerable birds and red-listed mammalian species are high under certain conditions. VKM also find that there is a considerable risk associated with increased spread of infectious organisms from cats to wildlife and other domestic species. Some of these infectious organisms may also infect humans. With respect to mitigation measures, VKM concludes that measures focused on limiting cats' access to prey populations are likely to yield the most positive outcomes in terms of mitigating the adverse impact on biodiversity.

Para compreendermos o comportamento dos animais de companhia é necessário situarmo-nos no contexto evolutivo do cão e do gato. Os comportamentos sociais e comunicativos começam ao nascimento e tornam-se mais intricados à medida que o filhote envelhece e que o próprio aprendizado passa por estágios de socialização, desenvolvimento de relações de dominador e subordinado, maturação comportamental e interações de grupo, seguindo a hipótese de períodos críticos. Ao nos relacionarmos com os cães e gatos temos de ter noções de necessidade social, sendo as reações dos animais a outras espécies e pessoas dependentes de fatores como socialização, ambiente, fisiologia, individualidade, estimulação e aprendizado inicial. Conhecimentos de bem-estar e necessidades são fundamentais em estudos envolvendo o comportamento e a criação de cães e gatos. Devemos lembrar que os cães e gatos também possuem necessidades de gasto energético, mental e físico e a falta de estímulos geram frequentemente animais entediados, compulsivos, frustrados e apresentando diversos tipos de comportamentos atípicos. Desta forma, atividades físicas, exploratórias e sociais e enriquecimento ambiental (com objetos e obstáculos) ocupam e estimulam cães e gatos, proporcionando bem-estar e saúde aos animais.

The "Integrated Cats Control Strategy for Bird Conservation on Reunion Island (2024-2029)" aims to address the critical threat posed by feral cats to endemic bird species, including the endangered Barau's Petrel (Pterodroma baraui), Mascarene Petrel (Pseudobulweria aterrima), and the critically endangered Reunion Cuckooshrike (Lalage newtoni). The strategy emphasizes a comprehensive approach that combines international best practices with region-specific knowledge to control and manage cat populations. The plan involves habitat management, public awareness, and improving the effectiveness of existing cat management methods, while also ensuring the well-being of domestic cats. It also seeks to strengthen cooperation between various stakeholders, including local communities, conservation organizations, and governmental bodies, to ensure long-term conservation success and the recovery of threatened species. The strategy aims to significantly reduce cat populations in key conservation areas while promoting responsible pet ownership and mitigating the impact of feral cats on biodiversity. целью статьи является представление обзора отечественных и зарубежных эмпирических исследований, связанных с изучением влияния взаимодействия человека с домашними кошками на психику человека. Эта тема, несмотря на сравнительно большое количество статей, пока еще не является в достаточной мере изученной, что обуславливает ее высокую актуальность. Автором статьи показано, что кошки имеют значительный терапевтический потенциал, что выражается в положительном влиянии кошек на психику человека, причём на любой стадии его онтологического развития и в рамках любой социальной группы. Это обуславливает значительные возможности, которые может предоставить фелинотерапия в психотерапевтической практике. Одновременно автор констатирует дефицит научных подходов к использованию этого потенциала. Кроме того, отмечается, что эффективность фелинотерапии как психотерапевтического метода напрямую зависит от условий обращения с кошкой, соблюдения её прав и свобод. Также важно соблюдать ограничения применения методов фелинотерапии: не допускать к такому виду терапии пациентов с аллергической реакцией на кошек или испытывающих к кошкам неприязнь по личным, культурным или религиозным причинам. Автор статьи полагает необходимым продолжать эмпирические исследования взаимодействия человека и кошки и разрабатывать такие подходы, которые позволили бы получать максимальную пользу обеим сторонам этого взаимодействия. the purpose of the article is to provide an overview of domestic and foreign empirical studies related to the study of the influence of human interaction with domestic cats on the human psyche. This topic, despite the relatively large number of articles, has not yet been sufficiently studied, which causes its high relevance. The author of the article shows that cats have significant therapeutic potential, which is expressed in the positive influence of cats on the human psyche, and at any stage of its ontological development and within any social group. This leads to significant opportunities that feline therapy can provide in psychotherapeutic practice. At the same time, the author notes the lack of scientific approaches to the use of this potential. In addition, it is noted that the effectiveness of feline therapy as a psychotherapeutic method directly depends on the conditions of treatment of a cat, respect for its rights and freedoms. It is also important to observe the restrictions on the use of feline therapy methods: do not allow patients with an allergic reaction to cats or who dislike cats for personal, cultural or religious reasons to this type of therapy. The author of the article believes it is necessary to continue empirical studies of human-cat interaction and develop approaches that would maximize the benefits to both sides of this interaction.

Unexpectedly early evidence for the precocious spread of farming has recently emerged in Cyprus. It is argued that the transmission occurred as a result of migration related to ecosystem stress in the Levant. So strong are the connections of the colonists with the mainland that we suggest the term Cypro-Pre-Pottery Neolithic B to describe what has hitherto been a major lacuna in Cypriot prehistory. Consistent dates from key sites and the evolution of material culture indicate that this Cypro-PPNB sequence represents the hitherto elusive ancestry for the Khirokitian.

Sample scarcity and the need of a methodology well-suited to determination of archaeological specimens are responsible for the lack of information on the mechanism and on the ecological and anthropological conditions of the spread of the house mouse in Europe. We applied Fourier outline analysis to the lower first molars of mice from assemblages trapped in water wells from Early and Middle PPNB in Cyprus (Kissonerga–Mylouthkia). Results suggest that the house mouse was a part of the Neolithic ecological and cultural package introduced into the island by the very first agro-pastoral societies coming from the mainland.

Much of Ireland's Pleistocene and Early Holocene mammalian faunas are derived from a series of late 19th/early 20th century cave excavations. In many instances it would appear that the deposits containing these faunal remains were disturbed. This project assessed the chronological range of the mammalian species present in the caves using 14C dating, in particular accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). The research has shown that (1) a wide range of mammals colonised Ireland in the period between at least 45 ka and 20 ka, with some elements surviving until close to the Last Glacial Maximum; (2) a more restricted range of species re-colonised Ireland during the Lateglacial period, with evidence for a slightly more temperature fauna being replaced by an Arctic fauna at about 11 ka; (3) certain elements of Ireland's Holocene fauna may have survived through from the Lateglacial into the Holocene; (4) there is a lack of evidence for red deer, Cervus elaphus, being present in the Early Holocene in Ireland; and (5) horse is only documented in the Irish Holocene from 4 ka. The paper also discusses the implications of the Quaternary Fauna Project for the Late Pleistocene of Ireland, the mechanism and period of colonisation of Ireland as well as the introduction of domesticates in the Mid Holocene.

The recent discovery of Parekklisha–Shillourokambos, an Aceramic Neolithic settlement dating to the late 9th and the 8th millennia cal. BC, pushes back the appearance of the Neolithic in Cyprus by a millennium. This insular early Aceramic Neolithic culture has much in common with the PPNB in the northern Levant, which now appears to have spread from its point of origin earlier than previously supposed, and it occurred even before animal husbandry had brought about morphological changes in hearded caprovids. From the middle of the 8th to the early 7th millennium BC, the Cypriot Neolithic slowly evolved into what would become known as the Aceramic Neolithic Khirokitia culture.

Two new fairly complete remains of dogs were uncovered from a burial in Hayonim Terrace (northern Israel), dated to the first half of the 11th millenium (bp) (Late Natufian). This burial contained the remains of three humans associated with an elaborate construction. A detailed analysis of these dogs, and a comparison with all known Natufian remains, suggested that genuine dogs were already living around and within human habitations during this period. While most studies on early dogs were carried out on post-Natufian material, a period during which intentional selection could have already been widely experienced, we show that the evolvement of Natufian dogs were the product of unconscious selection of commensal wolves quasi-isolated under the special anthopogenic habitats created within and around Natufian sites, and at least ritually assimilated to human society. There is no evidence that Neolithic dogs are direct descendants of Natufian ancestors. Their multiregional origination is a widely accepted phenomenon. We suggest that Neolithic dogs were either domesticated anew, or were introduced from elsewhere to the southern Levant. Although the number of specimens of Natufian dogs is still small, evidently the emergence of some patterns clearly indicate that all them were already markedly different from the recent southern Levantine wolves and, in spite of their widely ranged morphology, constituted a unique group. It is shown that the shortening of the muzzle mainly affected the anterior part of the snout, while the posterior region remained practically unchanged. In this respect they seem to display a typical case of paedomorphosis. The simultaneous diminution of the carnassials, and other teeth, alongside with the snout, was marked enough that no crowding of the teeth took place by any of the Natufian dogs. The disproportional reduction of the snout versus teeth that caused the “crowding” phenomenon is only known from later periods.
