Trip characteristics of vehicle crashes involving child passengers

To describe the trip characteristics of vehicle crashes involving children, and to examine the effect of situational factors on front row seating or inappropriate restraint for young children.
A cross sectional study was conducted on children <16 years in crashes of insured vehicles in 15 US states, with data collected using insurance claims records and a telephone interview. A descriptive analysis of the characteristics of vehicle crashes involving children was performed. Multivariate Poisson regression was used to identify situational factors associated with inappropriate restraint or front row seating.
These data suggest that children were traveling in vehicles involved in crashes that occurred under usual driving circumstances-that is, closer to home (60%), on a local road (56%), during normal daytime hours (71%), within areas with relatively lower posted speed limits (76%). Compared with children involved in morning crashes, those in daytime crashes (RR = 1.65, 95% CI 1.13 to 2.49) or in night-time crashes (RR = 1.63, 95% CI 1.09 to 2.67) were more likely to be sitting in the front seat. Children involved in night-time crashes were more likely to be inappropriately restrained (RR = 1.12, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.22) than those in daytime crashes. Children riding with two or more additional passengers were more likely to be inappropriately restrained (RR = 1.12, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.27) than those with no other passengers.
Educational initiatives should aim to increase the perception that parents have about the potential crash risk of everyday trips. Some situational characteristics of trips were associated with inappropriate restraint and front row seating behaviors for young children.

    ABSTRACT: This paper describes our research into the processes that govern driver attention and behavior in familiar, well-practiced situations. The experiment examined the effects of extended practice on inattention blindness and detection of changes to the driving environment in a high-fidelity driving simulator. Participants were paid to drive a simulated road regularly over 3 months of testing. A range of measures, including detection task performance and driving performance, were collected over the course of 20 sessions. Performance from a yoked Control Group who experienced the same road scenarios in a single session was also measured. The data showed changes in what drivers reported noticing indicative of inattention blindness, and declining ratings of mental demand suggesting that many participants were “driving without awareness”. Extended practice also resulted in increased sensitivity for detecting changes to road features associated with vehicle guidance and improved performance on an embedded vehicle detection task (detection of a specific vehicle type). The data provide new light on a “tandem model” of driver behavior that includes both explicit and implicit processes involved in driving performance. The findings also suggest reasons drivers are most likely to crash at locations very near their homes.

    ABSTRACT: International research suggests that a large proportion of children travel in the front seat of passenger vehicles even though this places them at increased risk of serious injury or death. There are no comparable figures for Australia. This study was conducted to estimate the proportion of Australian children seated in the front seat of passenger vehicles and to explore restraint use. Trained observers noted the seating positions of children, their ages and the types of restraints used for 1295 passenger vehicles carrying child passengers (aged 12 years and under) in Brisbane during March/April 2005. Results suggest that approximately 60% of passenger vehicles carrying children had at least 1 child seated in the front seat. Age was associated with greater likelihood of front seating with most child front seat passengers being aged 7-12 years. While over 90% of child passengers were restrained, around 25% wore restraints that were not optimal for their ages. These figures indicate a clear opportunity for interventions aimed at raising awareness of the risk involved in allowing children to occupy the front seat as well as encouraging parents and drivers to seat them in the rear seat whenever possible. There is also a need to explore parental knowledge of age-appropriate restraints and to encourage more widespread use.

    ABSTRACT: There is growing evidence that children's protection as car passengers can be improved through both appropriate restraint use and through insisting that they travel in the rear seat rather than the front. However many children still travel in the front seats of cars in Australia and New Zealand. Encouraging parents to keep children in the rear seat requires an understanding of why they allow their children to sit in the front seat. As part of a larger study, an intercept interview was conducted with parent-drivers (n = 470) of children (≤12 years). Questions focussed on parents' concerns about children’s safety in cars, family rules about seating position, and the influences on their decisions in relation to where they allow their children to sit. This paper reports preliminary findings from those parents with children aged 4 years or older (n=265). While most parents were concerned about where their children sat, and had a rule that children should travel in the rear seat, over 60% had allowed children to sit in the front seat at some time. The strongest influence on their decisions, affecting 23% of these parents, was lack of space for all children in the rear seat. Around one fifth reported that having older children who were allowed to sit in the front seat or children who fought a lot were also influential on their seating position decisions. These findings suggest that interventions to encourage the practice of children travelling in the rear seat can be addressed through engineering and behavioural avenues. By drawing the attention of manufacturers of child restraints and vehicles to parents’ experiences of using such products it may be possible to encourage design changes that facilitate children remaining in the rear seat to older ages. In terms of behaviour, interventions with parents would do well to capitalise on the existing rules parents use to prevent children from sitting in the front seat as well as providing parents with strategies to address child management issues.
