Aronia melanocarpa, native to eastern North America, has become popular in Eastern Europe and Russia. Aronia melanocarpa fruits are one of the richest plant sources of phenolic substances, mainly anthocyanins--glycosides of cyanidin. Anthocyanins are water soluble pigments accounting for the dark blue and even black color of the fruits. Administered orally they can be absorbed as intact glycosides. Aronia melanocarpa fruit juice and anthocyanins derived from the fruits have been studied intensively for the last 15 years. Most of the effects of Aronia melanocarpa anthocyanins are due to their high antioxidative activity. Our investigations have demonstrated a remarkable hepatoprotective, a very good gastroprotective and a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect of Aronia melanocarpa fruit juice in rats as well as a bacteriostatic activity in vitro against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli and an antiviral activity against type A influenza virus. Research of other authors has demonstrated that Aronia melanocarpa anthocyanins can normalize the carbohydrate metabolism in diabetic patients and in streptozotocin-diabetic rats, have an in vitro antimutagenic activity and exhibit a distinct immunomodulatory activity in human lymphocyte cultures and in patients with breast cancer, suppress the growth of human HT-29 colon cancer cells, inhibit the N-nitrosamine formation in rats and decrease the toxicity and cumulation of cadmium in liver and kidneys. Currently, there are no data in literature about any unwanted and toxic effects of Aronia melanocarpa fruits, juice and extracts.

Obesity is caused by excessive fat cells and the overgrowth of adipocytes and is a major risk factor for several chronic illnesses. Aronia melanocarpa fruit is rich in anthocyanins and polyphenols and has protective effects against various diseases. In this study, we examined the effect of Aronia extract (Aronia bioactive fraction, ABF®) on the biomarkers of the adipogenic pathway during adipocyte differentiation of 3T3-L1 cells. Lipid accumulation was verified by Oil Red O staining. mRNA and protein expression of lipoprotein lipase (LPL), CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein α (C/EBPα), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ), fatty acid-binding protein 2 (FABP2), and fatty acid synthase (FAS) were assayed by RT-qPCR and Western blot analyses. Adiponectin and leptin secretion were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. ABF® treatment downregulated lipid accumulation based on Oil Red O staining. ABF®-treated cells exhibited decreased mRNA and protein expression of LPL, C/EBPα, PPARγ, FABP2, and FAS. Moreover, ABF® treatment significantly increased adiponectin secretion and decreased leptin secretion. In conclusion, ABF® has anti-adipogenic effects on the differentiation of 3T3-L1 cells and may be used as an anti-obesity nutraceutical.

The aim of the study is to evaluate the effect of Aronia melanocarpa fruit juice (AMJ) supplementation on age-related coronary arteries remodeled in aged rat hearts. Male Wistar rats (n = 24) were divided into three groups: (1) young controls (CY), aged 2 months, without AMJ supplementation; (2) old controls (CO), aged 27 months, without AMJ supplementation; and (3) the AMJ group (A), which used 27-month old animals, supplemented orally with AMJ for 105 days. AMJ supplementation did not influence the wall-to-diameter parameter (Kernohan index) of the coronary arteries of test animals. Aged rats supplemented with AMJ showed a significant decrease in the amount of collagen fibers in their coronary tunica media, as compared with the old controls. The intensity of the immunoreaction for alpha smooth muscle actin (αSMA) in the coronary tunica media was significantly lower in the supplemented group than in the old controls. The intensity of the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) immunoreaction in the coronary tunica media of the supplemented group was significantly higher than the one observed in the old controls. These results indicate the positive effects of AMJ supplementation on the age-dependent remodeling of coronary arteries and support for the preventive potential of antioxidant-rich functional food supplementation in age-related diseases.

Urinary tract infections (UTI) represent one of the most widespread infections, and frequent recurrent episodes, induced mostly by uropathogenic Escherichia coli, make them increasingly difficult to treat. Long-term antibiotic therapy is an effective approach to treat recurrent UTI but generates adverse effects, including the emergence of pathogenic strains resistant to the vast majority of antibiotics. These drawbacks have enhanced the interest toward new alternatives based on natural remedies to prevent and treat recurrent UTI, especially in a synergistic antibiotic approach. Therefore, this review highlights the potential of some medicinal plants to be used in the management of recurrent UTI, including plants that have been approved for the treatment of urinary infections and promising, but less studied, plant candidates with proven anti-uropathogenic activity. Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.), black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa Michx.), and cornelian cherry (Cornus mas L.) have great potential to be used for prevention or in a combined antibiotic therapy to cure UTI, but more studies and clinical trials in specific population groups are required. Further progress in developing plant-based products to cure rUTI will be supported by advances in UTI pathogenesis and human-based models for a better understanding of their pharmacological activities.

The present study investigates the effect of the addition of medicinal plants, such as lady’s mantle, lavender, rosehip, and meadowsweet, on the chemical composition, antioxidant activity, and color intensity of ready-to-drink aronia nectar during pasteurization and long-term storage. Pasteurization caused a significant decrease in anthocyanin content of aronia nectar, which reduced to 20% of the initial value after four months of storage. Herbs provided different protection to aronia anthocyanins that degraded more slowly during the four-month storage compared to pasteurized control without herbs. The addition of medicinal plants enriched aronia nectar with phenolic compounds and increased its antioxidant activity by up to 52% in meadowsweet-aronia nectar. Moreover, it was accompanied by a color intensity magnification due to co-pigmentation of aronia anthocyanins and herbal phenolics. In contrast to anthocyanins, which constantly degraded during the whole period, color intensity began to stabilize after 30 days, demonstrating that co-pigmentation was progressively established during the time and rosehip provided the best stabilization of aronia nectar color. Current research demonstrates for the first time that medicinal plants such as lady’s mantle, rosehip, and especially meadowsweet can be used to increase antioxidant activity, color, and anthocyanin stability of black chokeberry functional beverages.

The COVID-19 pandemic marks the time in which we live. More than 167 million people have been infected so far, and over 3 million people have died. The increase in cardiometabolic risk factors during COVID-19 was due, among other things, to isolation and a sedentary lifestyle, as well as higher food intake. Serbia belongs to the group of countries with a high cardiovascular risk. The meta-analysis confirmed the relationship between the severity of cardiometabolic diseases and the development of a more severe clinical sings of COVID-19, while the metabolic syndrome is a significant inducer of disease complications. Endothelial dysfunction in patients with metabolic syndrome plays an important role in the development of COVID-19 complications. Any activity that leads to a reduction in inflammatory processes in the endothelium and improvement of microcirculatory function is beneficial. Polyphenolic compounds have potential to show a beneficial effect during prevention and treatment of COVID-19. Aronia melanocarpa polyphenol extract is a product that promises. Strong anti-inflammatory action, as well as a high degree of bacteriostatic and antiviral activity, including activity against the SARS-CoV-2 virus has been proven by clinical trials. Aronia extract in in vitro experiments leads to direct inactivation of various viral cultures: influenza A (99.99%), SARS-CoV-2 virus (96.98%) and adenoviruses (93.23%). With its systemic action, aronia extract manages to significantly affect the symptoms and parameters of the metabolic syndrome, so as such it is a logical and efficacy food supplement choice in the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 including and post-COVID-19 symptoms.

The yogurt was obtained from a combination of 50% goat's milk and 50% cow's milk with the inclusion of scald fruits of aronia (Aronia melanocarpa), raspberries (Rubus idaeus), strawberry (Fragaria xanassa). Physico-chemical and microbiological indices were determined, according to standard methods, after manufacture and storage, after 1, 5, 10, 15 days. Compared to other samples, yogurt with aronia showed the best values of the dynamics specific to the development of microorganisms: 2.93.107 cfu/ml; the growth rate of lactic acid bacteria at fermentation 0.95 μ; physico-chemical indices: titratable acidity 85 ± 0.078⁰T, pH 4.28 ± 0.002, water activity 0.875 ± 0.025; total dry matter 18.45 ± 0.31%, viscosity 2500 ± 0.023 mPa s, ash content 0.89 ± 0.10% and the optical density 2.531 ± 0.054 nm. Yeasts and molds were not detected in any of the samples. From a physico-chemical point of view, in storage, in all fruit yogurt samples the titratable acidity showed increasing values, pH remaining in the range of permissible values. In storage fruits formed an association to control the microbiological risk and stability of yogurt. Fruit yogurt shows a synergism with Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus, Lactococcus lactis subsp lactis biovar diacetilactis. The overall Pearson coefficient (Pc = f(pH and MC) for all fruit yogurt samples is -0.95066.
Cultivation and consumption of berry fruits in the world and in our country is increasing due to reasons such as different ways of evaluation, high income per unit area and health benefits. Aronia, which belongs to the Rosaceae family, is a berry type that can be easily grown in temperate climates and has a high yield per unit area. Aronia is included in healthy nutrition programs due to the antioxidants, phenols, minerals and vitamins it contains. Besides fresh consumption, aronia fruits are also used by drying, processing into products such as fruit juice, vinegar, jam, tea, marmalade.
Anthocyanins possess strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory physiological activities. This chapter summarizes the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of anthocyanins from different food sources and discusses the mechanism of the above two activities. The antiultraviolet activity of anthocyanins and the physiological activity of improving osteoporosis are also introduced.
Muscle tension dysphonia is a functional voice disorder
caused by unbalanced activity of the laryngeal and extralaryngeal muscles. People with dysphonia may have changes in
the cervical and perilaryngeal muscles, limited amplitude of
movement of the cervical spine, but also posture disorders.
The aim of this paper is to present the analyzed therapeutic effects of manual techniques in muscle tension dysphonia,
based on a review of the available literature. In accordance
with the set criteria and the goal of the paper, the collection and analysis of professional and scientific research papers available in PubMed / MEDLINE databases and others,
published in the period from 2004 to 2018, was performed. The
analyzed studies belong to the type of clinical studies and by
design, two types of studies are included: the type of randomized control study and the study of one group of subjects with
before- and after-examination. Some studies with one group
of respondents were characterized by the authors as a series
of cases and one, as a small pilot study of repeated measures.
The results of the research indicate a larger number of corrective effects of laryngeal manual therapy. It is certain that
by developing a broader manual-therapeutic approach, the
etiological factor of muscle tension dysphonia can be more
effectively influenced which leads to a reduction in pain, improvement of physical functioning as well as improvement of
specific vocal qualities.
