In this Account, we discuss the usefulness of the sol-gel process in the synthesis of materials comprising nanoscale architectures. We describe the processing of semiconducting, metallic, ferroelectric, or scintillating nanoparticles in various oxide matrices. We also discuss the synthesis of some nanoporous oxides and organic-inorganic nanohybrids, including core-shell nanostructures.

    ABSTRACT: In this manuscript, we report a facile and environmental friendly procedure for the aqueous synthesis of gold nanoparticles (∼3-8 nm) and functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) interlinked through bi-functionalized silicate molecule N-[3(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine (EDAS). The complexes, denoted by MWCNT-EDAS-AuNPs, were then characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope (TEM), and atomic force microscope (AFM). In addition, it is also fabricated on glassy carbon electrodes to simultaneously detect ascorbic acid (AA) and dopamine (DA) using an electrochemical technique. MWCNT-EDAS-AuNPs can act as a modified electrode and show a wide linear response for AA and DA in the concentration range of 1 × 10−7-9 × 10−6 M and 1 × 10−7-8 × 10−6 M with detection limits of 0.07 and 0.08 μM at S/N = 3, respectively. These results have demonstrated that MWCNT-EDAS-AuNPs are a promising candidate as advanced electrode material in electrochemical sensing of AA and DA simultaneously in pharmaceutical samples.

    ABSTRACT: The Y-Zr-O precursors derived from an aqueous sol–gel synthesis have been applied for the preparation of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) powders and thin films on the corundum (Al2O3) substrate, using dip-coating technique. In this aqueous sol–gel synthesis route, citric acid as a complexing agent has been used for the preparation of stable Y-Zr-O nitrate–citrate sols and gels. Thermal decomposition of dried gels was studied by simultaneous TG/DTA/EGA-FTIR measurements in the dynamic 80%Ar + 20%O2 atmosphere. FTIR and X-ray diffraction analyses were used for the determination of phase purity of the end products obtained at 700, 800 and 900 °C. The morphological features of the prepared YSZ coatings and powders were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy.

    ABSTRACT: In this study, monophasic strontium and barium stannate (SrSnO3, Sr2SnO4, BaSnO3, Ba2SnO4) powders were synthesized by means of environmentally friendly aqueous sol–gel technique under neutral conditions. However, it was established that the successful sol–gel synthesis of appropriate calcium stannates (CaSnO3 and Ca2SnO4) can be performed only at acidic sol–gel processing conditions. Moreover, the influence of nature of alkaline earth metal source on the phase purity of different metal stannates was evaluated. The thermal behaviour of Ca–Sn–O, Sr–Sn–O and Ba–Sn–O precursor gels was investigated by TG-DSC measurements. The phase purity, crystallization peculiarities and microstructural evolution of the sol–gel derived alkaline earth metal stannate powders were studied by XRD and SEM measurements.
