Lycium barbarum Increases Caloric Expenditure and Decreases Waist Circumference in Healthy Overweight Men and Women: Pilot Study

Lycium barbarum (L. barbarum), a traditional Asian medicinal therapy for diabetes and other conditions, has been shown to increase metabolic rate and to reduce body-weight gains in rodent models, as well as to produce clinical improvements in general feelings of well-being including energy level. To investigate the impact of L. barbarum consumption on (1) caloric expenditure and (2) changes in morphometric parameters (waist circumference) in healthy human adults. Method: Two separate randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, small clinical studies were conducted using a standardized L. barbarum fruit juice, GoChi, and assessing its effects on (1) resting metabolic rate (RMR) and postprandial energy expenditure (PPEE) as measured by indirect calorimetry after single-bolus intake of 3 doses of L. barbarum (30, 60, and 120 ml) and placebo; and (2) waist circumference and other morphometric changes in a 14-day intervention trial (120-ml daily intake) in the subjects (age = 34 years, body mass index = 29 kg/m(2)). (1) A single bolus of L. barbarum intake increased PPEE 1 through 4 hours postintake over the baseline level in a dose-dependent manner and was significantly higher than the placebo group by 10% at 1 hour postintake of 120 ml (p < 0.05). (2) In a 14-day intervention trial, L. barbarum was found to significantly decrease waist circumference by 5.5 ± 0.8 cm (n = 15) compared with the preintervention measurements and placebo group at postintervention day 15 (p < 0.01). By contrast, the changes in the placebo group (n = 14) from preinterventions was 0.9 ± 0.8 cm, which was not statistically significant. These results show that L. barbarum consumption increases metabolic rate and reduces the waist circumference, relative to placebo treated control subjects.

Glucose and lipid metabolism disorders (GLMD) are typically characterized by the metabolic disturbance of glucose and lipid. Clinically, GLMD includes diabetes, hyperlipidemia, obesity and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Studies found that Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) have activities of hypoglycemic, lowering blood lipids, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antitumor. Among them, the effects of LBP on improving insulin sensitivity, regulating blood lipids and reducing blood glucose have attracted much attention. This paper reviews the beneficial effects of LBP on controlling glucose and lipid metabolism diseases, so as to provide evidence for the potential use of LBP as a healthy food material for the control of metabolic diseases.

Goji berries have long been used for their nutritional value and medicinal purposes in Asian countries. In the last two decades, goji berries have become popular around the world and are consumed as a functional food due to wide-range bioactive compounds with health-promoting properties. In addition, they are gaining increased research attention as a source of functional ingredients with potential industrial applications. This review focuses on the antioxidant properties of goji berries, scientific evidence on their health effects based on human interventional studies, safety concerns, goji berry processing technologies, and applications of goji berry-based ingredients in developing functional food products.

Lycium barbarum and L. chinense are two closely related shrubs known as goji, which have been used in China for more than 2000 years as a traditional medicine and food supplement. These fruits contain a number of bioactive substances, of which polysaccharides (LBP) in particular are of interest for their inhibitory effects on the aging process. LBPs have antioxidant, immunomodulatory and antiapoptotic effects and also protect DNA from damage. As demonstrated in several animal models, this set of pharmacological activities results in LBP slowing down the aging process. This review article aims to present available valid information on the bioactive substances of plants of the genus Lycium and to critically assess the available scientific evidence on their retarding effects on the biological aging process.

The term “superfruit” usually refers to certain fruits, which are rich in antioxidant components, therefore, are beneficial to human health. In China, there has been the concept of health preservation and dietary therapy through food intake in a long history. However, some other superfruits growing mainly in China have not attracted extensive attention, such as Cili, Goji berry, and sea buckthorn. Many studies suggested all of these superfruits showed strong antioxidant effects and anti-inflammatory activity in common. However, there are various other advantages and functions in different fruits. This article reviewed the research findings from the existing literature published about major antioxidant bioactive compounds and the potential health benefits of these fruits. The phytochemicals from superfruits are bioaccessible and bioavailable in humans with promising health benefits. More studies are needed to validate the health benefits of these superfruits. It would provide essential information for further research and functional food development.

The advancement within the food and nutrition sector has resulted in the development of a special category of food, particularly referred to as “superfoods”. Superfoods are special kind of foods capable of exhibiting different positive effects involving prevention of different ailments, pro- vide impetus to the immune system, and essential macro- and micro-nutrients in ample quantities. Nowadays, these are gaining considerable attention due to the increased health consciousness of consumers. In contrast to their exceptional health or even medicinal benefits, which are based on their long history of use, the concept of superfoods is still little understood. The category of super- foods mainly comprises different types of fruits, vegetables, grains, etc. This review sheds light on the nutritional composition as well as the possible intervention in the prevention of various chronic ailments of some significant superfoods. This manuscript could help consumers to use superfoods as part of their diet more often and very effectively.

Lycium spp. are woody shrubs that belong to the family Solanaceae. Two species, Lycium barbarum L. and Lycium chinense Mill. are distributed at an altitude of about 1500-2000 m in the subtropical region of China, Korea, Japan, and East Asia. They are cultivated for their fruits and have a high significance in traditional Chinese medicine. Phytochemical studies have revealed that this plant contains various classes of phytoconstituents, such as polysaccharides, terpenoids, phenols and flavonoids. These phytochemicals are of greater health benefits as they show various pharmacological activities, such as hepatoprotective, immunomodulatory, neuroprotective, nephroprotective and various other activities. This chapter focuses on the scientific progress on the fruits of two species of Lycium (L. barbarum and L. chinense) related to nutraceutical and phytochemical composition, and the potential in the nutritional and functional food market in the near future.

Obesity is a significant health concern, as it causes a massive cascade of chronic inflammations and multiple morbidities. Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are chronic inflammatory conditions and often manifest as comorbidities of obesity. Adipose tissues serve as a reservoir of energy as well as releasing several inflammatory cytokines (including IL-6, IFN-γ, and TNF-α) that stimulate low-grade chronic inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disorders, fatty liver disease, oxidative stress, and chronic kidney diseases. Dietary intake, low physical activity, unhealthy lifestyle, smoking, alcohol consumption, and genetic and environmental factors can influence obesity and arthritis. Current arthritis management using modern medicines produces various adverse reactions. Medicinal plants have been a significant part of traditional medicine, and various plants and phytochemicals have shown effectiveness against arthritis and obesity; however, scientifically, this traditional plant-based treatment option needs validation through proper clinical trials and toxicity tests. In addition, essential oils obtained from aromatic plants are being widely used as for complementary therapy (e.g., aromatherapy, smelling, spicing, and consumption with food) against arthritis and obesity; scientific evidence is necessary to support their effectiveness. This review is an attempt to understand the pathophysiological connections between obesity and arthritis, and describes treatment options derived from medicinal, spice, and aromatic plants. Goji berry or wolfberry (Lycium barbarum) is known for its potent antioxidant effects. Goji berries are a bright-orange red color and native to Asia. They been used traditionally in Chinese medicine for dermatitis, myalgias, nose bleeds, and insomnia. In addition, they may be beneficial for macular degeneration, dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, vitality, hangover, immune function, and as an adjuvant to biological cancer therapy. Goji has shown antioxidant, antiaging, antiinflammatory, antiviral, immunomodulating, retinal-protective, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, antidiabetic, lipid-lowering, and anticancer properties. This chapter examines some of the scientific research conducted on goji, both alone and in combination formulas, for treating numerous health conditions. It summarizes results from several human studies of goji’s use in treating ophthalmological, cardiometabolic, vitality, immune, and oncologic disorders. Finally, the chapter presents a list of goji’s Active Constituents, different Commonly Used Preparations and Dosage, and a Section on “Safety and Precaution” that examines side effects, toxicity, and disease and drug interactions.

The objectives of this study were to determine the association of waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) with the risk of incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) events and to determine whether the strength of association of WC and WHR with CVD risk is different. This meta-regression analysis used a search strategy of keywords and MeSH terms to identify prospective cohort studies and randomized clinical trials of CVD risk and abdominal obesity from the Medline, Embase, and Cochrane databases. Fifteen articles (n = 258 114 participants, 4355 CVD events) reporting CVD risk by categorical and continuous measures of WC and WHR were included. For a 1 cm increase in WC, the relative risk (RR) of a CVD event increased by 2% (95% CI: 1-3%) overall after adjusting for age, cohort year, or treatment. For a 0.01 U increase in WHR, the RR increased by 5% (95% CI: 4-7%). These results were consistent in men and women. Overall risk estimates comparing the extreme quantiles of each measure suggested that WHR was more strongly associated with CVD than that for WC (WHR: RR = 1.95, 95% CI: 1.55-2.44; WC: RR = 1.63, 95% CI: 1.31-2.04), although this difference was not significant. The strength of association for each measure was similar in men and women. WHR and WC are significantly associated with the risk of incident CVD events. These simple measures of abdominal obesity should be incorporated into CVD risk assessments.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a weight management program using indirect calorimetry to set energy goals. 54 overweight, active duty adult employees of the US Air Force (age 18-46 years, BMI 25.2-35.6 kg/m(2)) participated in this quasi-experimental control design study. All participants were enrolled in a four-session US Air Force 'Sensible Weigh' group weight control program. Treatment participants received a personalized nutrition energy goal message developed using measured resting metabolic rate (RMR) from a hand-held indirect calorimeter (MedGem). Usual care participants received a nutritional message using a standard care equation (25 kcal/day x body weight) to set energy intake goals. Treatment participants lost significantly more weight than usual care participants (p < or = 0.05). Difference in weight loss between the treatment and usual care group were -4.3 kg +/- 3.3 vs. -1.8 kg +/- 3.2, respectively. There were no significant differences in reported food intake or energy expenditure between groups. The use of indirect calorimetry to assess RMR and set energy intake goals positively influences weight loss success in overweight Air Force personnel.

Lycium barbarum has been used as a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to nourish liver and kidney, and brighten the eye. The fruits are dried or freshly squeezed for their juice and concentrated for beverages. Among various constituents, a group of polysaccharides (LBP) with a Glycan-O-Ser glycopeptide structure has been most researched and considered to be important for the efficacy of L. barbarum. Studies indicate effects of L. barbarum on aging, neuroprotection, general well-being, fatigue/endurance, metabolism/energy expenditure, glucose control in diabetics, glaucoma, anti-oxidant properties, immunomodulation, anti-tumor activity and cytoprotection. In addition to TCM, L. barbarum can be sold as a dietary supplement or classified as a food based upon the long and safe traditional usage. This review is to provide background and updated information of chemical constituents and efficacies with safety including a new direction for research and current regulatory situation of L. barbarum.

Epidemiological and experimental studies have suggested that high dietary fat intake of mice is associated with many physically degenerative diseases. Since oxidative stress and abnormal lipid metabolism have been speculated to be critical mechanisms underlying degenerative diseases, we hypothesized that a high-fat (HF) diet might induce oxidative stress or lipid oxidation and subsequently contribute to the high risk of some diseases such as cardiovascular and cerebrovascular ones. To test this hypothesis, male kunming mice were placed on either a HF diet or a normal laboratory diet for 30 consecutive days. This investigation demonstrated that blood fat [low density lipoprotein (LDL), total cholesterol (TC), triacylglycerols (TAG), high density lipoprotein (HDL)], blood sugar (blood glucose and liver glycogen) and oxidative stress (activities of antioxidant enzymes and levels of non-enzymic antioxidants) of mice fed high-fat diet (group II) were significantly increased or decreased (P < 0.05, P < 0.01) when compared with the control group (I). The present study revealed that HF diet induced oxidative stress and provided novel evidence regarding the link between high dietary fat and increased risk of degenerative diseases. The administration of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides did not show any effect on the body weight of the experimental mice, but significantly decreased the levels of LDL, TC, TAG, blood glucose and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) or increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes (P < 0.05, P < 0.01) when compared with mice in HF group (II). These findings were further supported by significantly increased non-enzymic antioxidants levels (P < 0.05, P < 0.01), suggesting that L. barbarum polysaccharides showed a noticeable inhibition against lipid oxidation induced by free radicals caused by HF diet intake (groups III, IV, V) on the basis of their antioxidant activities.
