Entre a linguagem e a poesia: uma análise sintática sobre Os Sertões

This article aims to analyze some syntax aspects observed in the book Os Sertões written by Euclides da Cunha. This work will focus the analysis on some points, such as: the sentence constructions, the punctuation, the verbal forms and the position of adjectives. Those aspects will receive sometimes a linguistic treatment; this means that such aspects will be explained using a theoretical contribution of some modern linguistic theories. We know, however, that the study of styles cannot be exhausted on the formal aspects of the composition.

Many scholars have noted the linguistic links and similarities in content between the books of Esther and Jonah, and other biblical books. Some scholars have raised the possibility of a connection between Jonah and Esther themselves. This article will focus on establishing some further points of contact between these two books by comparing the descriptions of the fasting and mourning in Shushan ... [Show full abstract] (Esther 4) and Nineveh (Jonah 3). The mourning depicted in both Esther and Jonah should be understood as a petitionary mourning. As I shall demonstrate, there are many points of contact in plot, content and language related to the expressions of mourning in both texts. I will suggest that by creating links between these descriptions, the author of the book of Esther hints at some theological and moral implications that lack in its explicit text.

Topicilazation and Focalization in Persian

This article provides a syntactic analysis of Topicalization and Focalization processes in Persian within the framework of minimalist syntax. According to Haegeman and Gueron’s Split CP Hypothesis (1999), Topicalization is a recursive process and can apply to more than one constituent in a sentence, while Focalization is unique and therefore appears in a single projection. In this paper we argue ... [Show full abstract] that in Persian more than one constituent might undergo focalization. This implies that Focalization cannot be unique. Thus, we first propose two Focal Phrases in the periphery position of a clause. The specifier positions of the two Focal phrases are the landing sites of the focused constituents. Then we suggest the relative position of focal phrases with topic phrases in Persian. It will be concluded that the first focus phrase appears immediately after the complementizer phrase before the first recursive topic phrase followed by the second focus phrase and recursive topic phrase respectively.
