Sacred Values and Interreligious Dialogue

The paper develops a perspective on religion that is inspired by William James’ concept of religious experience and by the philosophy of language of the later Ludwig Wittgenstein. It proceeds by naming basic steps leading to the proposed conception and by showing that none of them must be a hindrance for a substantial understanding of religion. Furthermore, it proposes a way to interpret the expression ‘the sacred’ in the given framework. Finally it points out two contradictory necessities that make interreligious dialogue difficult: In the beginning one has to use an abstract vocabulary in order not to exclude any positions, but on the other hand one has to avoid robbing the participants of the means for articulating their specific religious views.

In this article the author explicates Herbert Hart’s theory of an ascriptive language as it has been developed in his influential early paper “The Ascription of Responsibility and Rights”. [Show full abstract] analytical approach to philosophical and legal issues. In the section ‘Results’ the author justifies that an ascriptive is a specific speech (illocutionary) act. In the section ‘Conclusion’ the matter concerns the original linguistic formula of an ascriptive that accurately reflects its nature. This article elaborates on the interpretation of ascriptive speech acts in legal language by evaluating the influence of philosophy of language on the formation of modern legal philosophy, along with evaluating the contribution of conceptual development of legal philosophy in the speech acts theory.

THE PRINCIPLES OF CONTEXT AND COMPOSITIONALITY: FROM THE GRUNDLAGEN TO THE TRACTATUS

The Principle of Context (PCtxt) and the Principle of Compositionality (PCmp) only conflict when they are construed as claims about the origin of meanings. I will clarify this point by means of an historical survey into the treatment that PCtxt receives in Frege's Grundlagen and in Wittgenstein's Tractatus. I will argue that Frege actually introduces non-equivalent formulations of PCtxt ... [Show full abstract] generating an unstable notion of meaning when related with PCmp. The Tractatus solves this imbalance by assuming both the contextuality and the compositionality at the very core of the notion of meaning, thus by ruling out the claim of two separated —sensitive to collision— principles. My thesis is that in the stage of development of the Tractatus, Wittgenstein found a way to meet and fit together the tensions between PCtxt and PCmp emerging in Frege's philosophy of language and detected by latter commentators.

OBRA DE ARTE E SENTENÇA: A EXPRESSÃO DO SENTIRE DO ARTISTA E DO JUIZ

O objetivo, no presente artigo, é apresentar à reflexão um paralelo entre a obra de arte, como expressão do sentimento de mundo do artista, e a sentença judicial, como expressão do sentimento, do sentire 1 do juiz, no julgamento dos processos, identificando, numa e noutra, "semelhanças de família", como diria Wittgenstein (1889-1951) 2 , que se entrecruzam em determinado momento, muito embora ... [Show full abstract] inteiramente diversa a natureza dos seus propósitos. A história revela as diversas fases da sociedade humana, com suas características peculiares, refletidas em todos os segmentos sociais, principalmente no campo das produções culturais, como o das artes. E antes de adentrar o cerne do estudo impõem-se algumas considerações sobre a reflexão aqui proposta de estar presente na produção artística, de um modo ou de outro, o sentimento de mundo do artista. Esse sentimento de mundo manifesta-se como a captação e exteriorização, pelo artista, "daquilo que está na percepção de todos e que, no entanto, ninguém parece perceber" e já exsurgia dos desenhos nas paredes das cavernas 3 , como em Altamira e Lascaux. 4 Assim é que, por exemplo, num momento histórico em que a sociedade ligava-se umbilicalmente ao divino e ao mítico, o sentimento de mundo do artista retratava essa particularidade, propiciando, como na arte grega clássica, a produção de formas artísticas tidas como ideais, que transcenderam a sua época e nos encantam até hoje.
