The fundamental theory of a new plastic hinge method for the nonlinear analysis of steel space frames was presented previously. The purpose of this paper is to describe the method to reduce total number of the elements for entire structre. It is done by evaluating the imaginary length lp of elastic-plastic region of the yield element using the nodal forces. Adopting the above procedure, the size of the master stiffness matrix becomes nearly as small as conventional plastic hinge method. The accuracy of this improved method is examined by several examples

Mixed variational principles and stabilization of spurious mode in the 9-node element

Advanced analysis of plane steel frame having imperfect elements

Imperfect elements having initial curvature are usually used in construction and erection of the structures. In this paper, the explicit stiffness matrix for imperfect element is derived. The nonlinear tangent stiffness matrix of the beam-column subjected to the axial force, nodal moments and the lateral uniformly distributed load is calculated. By using the proposed stiffness matrix, the load-displacement curve is compared with the accurate plastic region methods, and in the most cases, good agreement is found. Comparing the obtained results with other references shows the accuracy and capabilities of the new formulation in evaluation of the steel frame load capacity having inelastic second-order behavior.

Stresses in a fuselage model due to concentrated radial loads

Experimental values of shear and direct stresses on cross–sections of a fuselage model, due to concentrated radial loads applied to a frame, are compared with values predicted by a matrix force analysis. Two frames (one planar and the other space) have been analyzed under proportional static loads by the suggested method and by an initial force method, which is equivalent to hinge-formation methods. The results of the two methods show deviations during plastic deformations. The suggested method can be used directly or in an extended form for frame structures of any complicity and other types of loading.

The flexibility matrix of the element is also formed by integration of section flexibility matrices with force-interpolation functions, and then is inverted into the element stiffness matrix. The advantages of the flexibility method are discussed in the paper. Finally a numerical example is given for nonlinear analysis of a beam to illustrate the efficiency and accuracy of the method.

The present study shows that the present approach can give a thorough longitudinal analysis of one and two equal span curved bridges under permanent loads with good accuracy.

This study showed that the axial tension force reduces the connection initial stiffness and moment capacity. Based on the results obtained from analysing a series of fi nite element models under combined axial tension and moment loading, an equation is presented to estimate the affected moment–rotation response of such connections in terms of the connection geometrical properties, its moment–rotation response in the case of zero axial force and an expected axial tension force.
