Nickel cadmium charge control concepts

The design and testing of charge control concepts for several power systems is presented. The design of the CRAM charge control system for the SAS satellites and the design of the battery charge regulator for the AMPTE satellites is reviewed. Another charge control concept examined is for the OPEN program and its use of a microprocessor. The use of the voltage limiter is also discussed.

Coulometer controlled battery charge regulator controls nickel/cadmium type primary cells used in space applications. The use of the coulometer as an ampere hour measuring device permits all available current to go to the battery until full charge state is reached, at which time the charge rate is automatically reduced.

The Nickel Cadmium 129-ampere hour cell was tested in order to characterize the cell under controlled conditions. Results of charge characterization and discharge characterization are reported. Ampere hour efficiency, open circuit stand, and cycle life operation results are included. The battery is briefly described.
