Abstract

The ongoing development of information technology creates new and immensely complex environments. Our lifeworld is drastically influenced by these developments. The way information technology is intertwined in our daily life raises new issues concerning the possibility of understanding these new configurations. This paper is about the ways in which IS research can contribute to a deeper understanding of technology and the ongoing transformations of our lifeworld. As such, the paper is a conceptual exploration driven by a sincere and authentic desire to make a real difference in the way research on how technology influences our society is carried out. The article is based on the assumption that there are some foundational decisions forming research: the question of methodology, the question of object of study, and, most importantly, the question of being in service. In the paper we explore and propose a research position by taking a critical stance against unreflective acceptance of information technology and instead acknowledge people s life-world as a core focus of inquiry. The position is also framed around an empirical and theoretical understanding of the evolving technology that we label the digital transformation in which an appreciation of aesthetic experience is regarded to be a focal methodological concept. Covid-19 pandemic has hit each and every industrial sector globally. The sudden lockdown imposed by nations has severely affected business dynamics. Some businesses have transformed their operations so as to adapt to new environment and sustain in such environment. However, many other businesses were not prepared for such events and met their designed fate. As a result of unpredictability and interruption, businesses must now focus on building resilience into their operations. The pandemic’s important lesson has been needing of business resiliency, as companies strive to guarantee that they can continue operating in event of another calamity. Business has clearly moved to digital platforms for commercial, educational, and personal objectives leading to discussions globally on digital maturity. As a consequence, customers no longer expect just the same experience they had previously. They now considerably exhibit greater digital expectations. This is why all organizations, regardless of location or size, must accelerate their digital adoption and restructure their processes in order to meet customers where they are now and deliver the experience they mandate. Objective of this study intends to study effect of lockdown situation on digital transformation that various organizations underwent to sustain in new environment. The study aims to explore which industries transformed digitally more quickly than others and its impact on current perceived digital maturity of the organization. From a methodological perspective, a structured questionnaire is prepared to collect primary data from employees of various industries. 124 responses were collected and analyzed. The findings of study will help organizations to develop sustainable practices in such type of situations. Limitations are also discussed which can be considered for resolution in future studies.

This study determines the impact of technostress creators on employee wellbeing dimensions and employee engagement. This study also examines the moderating role of mindfulness and optimism to use technology between technostress creator and employee wellbeing. A longitudinal research design was adopted to collect the data from 286 government employees involved in public dealing during two waves of COVID-19 in Pakistan. The data were assessed using structural equation modeling and Hayes’ method to test mediation and moderation. The study findings shed important light on the role of personal resources in reducing stress over a time period. The results conclude that technostress creators negatively influence employee wellbeing dimensions and employee engagement in both waves. Also, personal resources, i.e. mindfulness and optimism to use technology, dampen the negative association of technostress creators on employee wellbeing. One of the significant limitations of this research is collecting the data from employees working in public offices only, whereas this study fills an essential gap by exploring the role of technostressors using a longitudinal study design.

Digital transformation (DT) has proven to be a major challenge for the society and economy in recent years and is supposed to keep employing both researchers and practitioners in the forthcoming decade (Hinterhuber et al. 2021;Loebbecke and Picot 2015;Verhoef et al. 2021;Vial 2019). Digital transformation (DT) has not only been a major challenge in recent years, it is also supposed to continue to enormously impact our society and economy in the forthcoming decade. On the one hand, digital technologies have emerged, diffusing and determining our private and professional lives. On the other hand, digital platforms have leveraged the potentials of digital technologies to provide new business models. These dynamics have a massive effect on individuals, companies, and entire ecosystems. Digital technologies and platforms have changed the way persons consume or interact with each other. Moreover, they offer companies new opportunities to conduct their business in terms of value creation (e.g., business processes), value proposition (e.g., business models), or customer interaction (e.g., communication channels), i.e., the three dimensions of DT. However, they also can become a threat for a company's competitiveness or even survival. Eventually, the emergence, diffusion, and employment of digital technologies and platforms bear the potential to transform entire markets and ecosystems. Against this background, IS research has explored and theorized the phenomena in the context of DT in the past decade, but not to its full extent. This is not surprising, given the complexity and pervasiveness of DT, which still requires far more research to further understand DT with its interdependencies in its entirety and in greater detail, particularly through the IS perspective at the confluence of technology, economy, and society. Consequently, the IS research discipline has determined and emphasized several relevant research gaps for exploring and understanding DT, including empirical data, theories as well as knowledge of the dynamic and transformative capabilities of digital technologies and platforms for both organizations and entire industries. Hence, this thesis aims to address these research gaps on the IS research agenda and consists of two streams. The first stream of this thesis includes four papers that investigate the impact of digital technologies on organizations. In particular, these papers study the effects of new technologies on firms (paper II.1) and their innovative capabilities (II.2), the nature and characteristics of data-driven business models (II.3), and current developments in research and practice regarding on-demand healthcare (II.4). Consequently, the papers provide novel insights on the dynamic capabilities of digital technologies along the three dimensions of DT. Furthermore, they offer companies some opportunities to systematically explore, employ, and evaluate digital technologies to modify or redesign their organizations or business models. The second stream comprises three papers that explore and theorize the impact of digital platforms on traditional companies, markets, and the economy and society at large. At this, paper III.1 examines the implications for the business of traditional insurance companies through the emergence and diffusion of multi-sided platforms, particularly in terms of value creation, value proposition, and customer interaction. Paper III.2 approaches the platform impact more holistically and investigates how the ongoing digital transformation and "platformization" in healthcare lastingly transform value creation in the healthcare market. Paper III.3 moves on from the level of single businesses or markets to the regulatory problems that result from the platform economy for economy and society, and proposes appropriate regulatory approaches for addressing these problems. Hence, these papers bring new insights on the table about the transformative capabilities of digital platforms for incumbent companies in particular and entire ecosystems in general. Altogether, this thesis contributes to the understanding of the impact of DT on organizations and markets through the conduction of multiple-case study analyses that are systematically reflected with the current state of the art in research. On this empirical basis, the thesis also provides conceptual models, taxonomies, and frameworks that help describing, explaining, or predicting the impact of digital technologies and digital platforms on companies, markets and the economy or society at large from an interdisciplinary viewpoint.

Geopolitical risks, business globalization, increasing complexity of transactions have required companies to adapt to changes. This chapter examines the digital transformation of supply chains and digitalization challenges in Japan. Many companies seem to realize the importance of digital transformation; however, on their way to digitalization companies face numerous challenges like a shortage of human and financial resources, a lack of awareness and understanding of digital transformation processes, etc. Moreover, Japanese culture does not easily fit digital transformation which also slows down the pace of transformation. As a result, the supply chain processes in the Japanese manufacturing companies remain old-fashioned, fragmented, siloed, with a lack of global vision and proper understanding of potential risks. To meet the needs of diverse customers, ensure global supply, and compete in uncertain environment, the SCM of Japanese companies has to be digitally upgraded and become more complex to achieve end-to-end supply chain optimization and an advanced decision-making.

Digital literature has provided significant insights into how digital transformation contributes to improving business performance. This research departs from these studies by focusing on driving factors of digital transformation and digital transformation strategies. Moreover, the authors determine the impact of digital transformation on firm performance and identify the challenges of adopting digital transformation. The results show that successful digital transformation can speed up the pace of innovation, increase productivity, improve customer experiences and satisfaction, reduce costs, and improve business performance. The results also revealed that major barriers to digital transformation include lack of knowledge, lack of digital expertise, poor digital leadership, resistance to change, inflexible culture, unclear vision and objective, lack of collaboration and alignment. These results will help to illuminate the complex issue of how to set an effective digital transformation.

In the year 2021, the world was exposed to and is still facing a health pandemic, the Covid-19 pandemic. The modes of learning and teaching had to adapt to the unexpected challenges and multiple demands on education because of the turbulent waters of Covid-19. The situation remains fluid as there is an international and national escalation of the infection rates and as lockdown restrictions are lifted, institutions of higher education are having to re-shape and adapt the rigid learning and teaching approaches to be more flexible and provide solutions to these challenges. This article reports on the transformation of learning and teaching practices in higher education institutions in South Africa during the Covid-19 pandemic. The purpose of this article is to reflect on how the Covid-19 pandemic has changed the modes of learning and teaching, despite several challenges that are still prevalent in these spaces. The article employs a qualitative research methodology approach and uses desktop research as a data collection tool. The findings revealed that the learning and teaching spaces are evolving to adapt to the circumstances, irrespective of the challenges, as it is an ongoing transformative environment that should ensure that these challenges are not exacerbated.

Blending social analysis and philosophy, Albert Borgmann maintains that technology creates a controlling pattern in our lives. This pattern, discernible even in such an inconspicuous action as switching on a stereo, has global effects: it sharply divides life into labor and leisure, it sustains the industrial democracies, and it fosters the view that the earth itself is a technological device. He argues that technology has served us as well in conquering hunger and disease, but that when we turn to it for richer experiences, it leads instead to a life dominated by effortless and thoughtless consumption. Borgmann does not reject technology but calls for public conversation about the nature of the good life. He counsels us to make room in a technological age for matters of ultimate concern—things and practices that engage us in their own right.
