Grain Yield Potential of Field Pea ( Pisum arvense L.) Germplasm

Abstract

Grain yield potential in relation to other important agronomic characters of 13 graypea ( Pisum arvense L.) germplasm during rabbi 1999-2000 was investigated in order to identify the high yielding promising germ plasm for further studies. Germplasm GP-01 ranked first by producing maximum yield of 1000 kg/ha, while germplasm GP-12 with 9444 kg/ha ranked second. Minimum yield of 49 kg/ha was obtained by GP-09, followed by GP-02 with 67 kg/ha. The germplasm in group 1 viz. GP-01 and GP-12 gave 63 and 93% higher yield than group II and group III, respectively. The higher yield in the germplasm of group I, was mainly due to more branches and pods per plant, pod length and seeds per pod and maximum dry matter than the germplasm of group II and III. GP-01 and GP-12 are the most promising germplasm recommended for further investigation.

The aim of this study was to determine the yield and some agricultural characters of seven field pea lines. The lines were evaluated with pure-line selection. Morphological characters such as main stem length (cm), number of branches per plant, leaf length (cm), leaf weight (g), leaf/stem ratio, pods/main stem and seeds/pod as well as agricultural green fodder yield (t ha-1), dry matter yield (t ha-1), seed yield (t ha-1), crude protein (%), protein yield (t ha-1) were investigated in Tekirdag (Turkey) during 1997-1999 under dry conditions. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with three replicates. Protein yield (1.33 t ha-1), green fodder yield (27.76 t ha-1), dry matter yield (7.34 t ha-1) and grain yield (2.67 t ha-1) of candidate varieties 16-DY and 16-K were determined to be higher than other lines. According to yield and yield components, the 16-DY and 16-K lines were found to be promising.

The experiment has carried out in the Field Crop Dept. College of Agriculture and Forestry, Mosul University by using Randomized Complete Block Design R.C.B.D with three replications, during two growing seasons 2008/2009 and 2009/2010. To evaluate the performance of Full-Diallel hybrids resulting from employing Full-Diallel crossing system among four varieties in field pea viz, 1-Ariare, 2-Nisere, 3-Marike and 4-Messire. The study aimed to determine the best parental combinations through estimating the effects of general and specific combining abilities of the studied genotypes. The results indicated that general combining ability was significant for all studied character except no. of branches per plant and green pods yield, and that specific combining ability was significant for all studied character except no. of days to flowering and maturity. The reciprocal effects was significant for all studied character except no. of pods per plant, average pod weight and 100 seed weight. The results showed that specific combining ability was higher than general combining ability for all the studied characters, by which indicated the presence of dominance gene action for those character. Marike variety showed high general combining ability for most of the studied characters, and therefore contains the desired gene. The hybrids varied for their specific combining abilities effects and this due to the wide genetic diversity between their parents.

El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar el rendimiento y algunas características agrícolas de siete variedades de chícharo. Estas se evaluaron por selección de variedades puras. Se estudiaron características morfológicas tales como el largo del tallo principal (cm), el número de ramas por planta, el largo de la hoja (cm), el peso de la hoja (g), la relación hoja-tallo principal y el número de semillas/vaina, así como el rendimiento de forraje verde (t ha-1), el rendimiento de materia seca (t ha-1), el rendimiento de granos (t ha-1), proteína cruda (%) y rendimiento de proteína (t ha-1). El estudio se llevó a cabo en Tekirdag, Turquía, desde 1997 a 1999 en condiciones secas. El diseño experimental fue de bloque completamente al azar con tres réplicas. El rendimiento de proteína (1.33 t ha-1), el rendimiento de forraje verde (27.76 t ha-1), materia seca (7.34 t ha-1) y granos (2.67 t ha-1) de las variedades 16-DY y 16-K fueron mayores que en otras variedades. An experiment consisted of 33 germplasm of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) collected from FATA (Federally Administered Tribal Areas) and neglected pockets of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were evaluated at the sub-Research Station, Kalam (Swat) during summer 1999-2000. Based on the grain yield potential, these germplasm were divided into three groups. Germplasm CB-9 ranked first by producing maximum grain yield of 3310 kg ha-1, while germplasm CB-6 with 3188 kg ha-1ranked second, while the lowest grain yield (333 kg ha-1) was produced by germplasm CB-23. Average grain yield in groups decreased in descending order from 2701 kg ha-1 in group I to 1553 kg ha-1 in group II and then further decreased to 750 kg ha-1 in group III. Maturity period varied from 76 to 96 days, plant height 39 to 96 cm, branches per plant 4 to 7, pod length 5.7 to 14.3 cm, seeds per pod 4.9 to 7.6, pods per plant 9 to 39, dry matter yield 1334 to 6666 kg ha-1, 100-seeds weight 19.0 to 72.1 g, and harvest index varied from 14.3 to 66.2% among different germplasm. Average values of grain yield in the three groups showed positive relationship with plant height, dry matter yield, and harvest index; but showed negative relationship with days to maturity.
