Introduction
Following the publication of the records of species of Lepidoptera added to the Portuguese fauna
in 2006 (CORLEY et al., 2007), we have decided that a similar list should be published annually.
However, for the 2007 list we want to expand the scope of the paper to include second and third
records of a species, where these records significantly extend the range of the species in Portugal, and
SHILAP Revta. lepid., 36 (143), septiembre 2008: 18 CODEN: SRLPEF ISSN:0300-5267
some additional records where major extensions of range have been discovered. As this paper has
wider scope than the 2006 paper, we have included a number of records from earlier years. New food-
plant data for the country is also included, as knowledge of larval food-plants within Portugal remains
poor. Finally, papers published in 2007 that relate to the Portuguese Lepidoptera fauna are listed and
briefly summarised.
38 species new for Portugal are listed below, of which two are also new to the Iberian Peninsula.
Nine of these species, marked (*) or (**), have been previously listed for Portugal, but the records
were erroneous. Two species are deleted from the Portuguese fauna.
Material and Methods
Most species were captured at mercury vapour light over a white sheet. Where this was not the
case, the means of capture is given. Specimens are retained in the collections of the original recorders,
unless otherwise stated.
The order and nomenclature of families and species follows KARSHOLT & RAZOWSKI (1996)
with some modifications reflecting more recent works. The nomenclature of plant names mainly
follows TUTIN et al. (1964-1980).
For most species that are new for Portugal in the list that follows a reference is given to a work in
which the genitalia are figured. Often the same work is useful for the whole of a family, so the
reference is given after the family heading. This has not been considered necessary for some
Macrolepidoptera for which good illustrations of the imagines are available in several books.
The entry for species new for Portugal concludes with a summary of the known European
distribution, and available information on the larval food-plant, given in square brackets if the
information comes from outside Portugal.

TM: Santa Cruz, larva on Teucrium scorodonium, 14-V-2007, Corley. Known from Spain to
England and Germany, also in Austria and Corsica.
Hellinsia osteodactylus (Zeller, 1841)
Third Portuguese record. TM: Amieiro, flying at dusk, 6-V-2007, Corley. First recorded from
ALG: Silves (RAGONOT, 1881), and also recorded from Setúbal (VIEILLEDENT, 1905). These
specimens have not been re-examined and may not be correctly identified.
PYRALIDAE
Hypotia muscosalis (Rebel, 1917)
BB: Monte Barata, 1-VII-2005, Pires, det. Corley. Previously recorded from Algarve in
CORLEY (2005) as H. delicatalis Asselbergs, 2004. There is also an unpublished record from
BAL: Monte dos Alhos, 8-IX-1978, J. Passos de Carvalho, in coll. Carvalho.
Pyralis lienigialis (Zeller, 1843)
Second Portuguese record. ALG: Boliqueime, 29-IV-2007, Dale. First record also from
Algarve (CORLEY, 2005).
(*) Delplanqueia inscriptella (Duponchel, 1836).
Separated from D. dilutella (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775) by LERAUT (2001). D. dilutella
in the Corley collection has been examined and all specimens are D. inscriptella. TM: Arnal, 2-IX-
2002, Corley; M: Cascata do Arado, 17-IX-2003, Corley; Portela de Leonte, 18-IX-2003, Corley;
TM: Ponte de Parâmio, 3-VI-2005, Corley; BL: Casmilo, 8-IX-2006, Corley, Marabuto & Pires. D.
dilutella is therefore unconfirmed for Portugal, but should remain on the Portuguese list until
further material has been examined. The exact distribution of these two species remains unclear.
[Larva on Thymus].
Hypochalcia ahenella (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775)
Second Portuguese record. TM: Abreiro Station, 7-V-2007, Corley. First recorded from TM:
Mirandela (MONTEIRO, 1976).
* Ephestia unicolorella (Staudinger, 1859).
Treated as a separate species from E. parasitella by LERAUT (2002). The differences in
genitalia are quite clear. The common species in Portugal is unicolorella, and all published records
of parasitella can be assumed to belong to unicolorella. Nevertheless E. parasitella is also present,
but apparently rare, see below. LERAUT (2002) further distinguishes two subspecies of
unicolorella. The typical subspecies occurs in the Near and Middle East. Subspecies woodiella
Richards & Thomson, 1932 is widespread in Europe and North Africa. [Larva on dead plant
material].
Ephestia parasitella Staudinger, 1859 (see above)
TM: Gondesende, 5-VI-2005, Corley; BA: Fóios, 23-VI-2007, Pires & Marabuto, det. Corley;
BB: Segura, 14-VII-2007, Corley. LERAUT (2002) gives the distribution as Spain, south France
and North Africa.

This species was described on the basis of material from Sevilla and Cáceres in Spain and from
Odeceixe in western Algarve. It has recently been found in additional Portuguese localities: BB:
Monte Barata, 1-VII-2005, Pires, det. Corley; Segura, 14-VII-2007, Corley; DL: Outeiró, 19-V-2006,
Corley. There are also specimens in the Cruz collection in IZPC, from R: Abrantes, IV-1955, IV-1957,
IV-1959, IX-1963, M. A. da Silva Cruz, det. Corley.
Acentria ephemerella (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775)
Second and subsequent Portuguese records. This species has evidently been overlooked by
Portuguese lepidopterists in the past. AAL: Ribeira de Seda, 5-VI-2007, Marabuto; BB: Ribeira do
Valmedra, 15-VII-2007, Corley; BAL: Pulo do Lobo, 29-VIII-2007, Marabuto & Dinis Cortes; Forte
do Vale do Beirão, 30-VIII-2007, Marabuto & Dinis Cortes; Ribeira de Terges, 15-IX-2007, Marabuto
& Ferreira. First recorded from BAL: Alcácer do Sal by AGENJO (1974) as Acentropus niveus.

Sitochroa verticalis (Linnaeus, 1758)
TM: Cabecico da Vinha, 9-V-2007, Corley, Marabuto & Pires; R. Tuela west of Fresulfe, flying
in morning sunshine, 15-V-2007, Corley. Reported from two localities in Trás-os-Montes in 2005 and
2006 (CORLEY et al., 2007). It is unlikely that such a conspicuous species, which often flies by day,
could have been overlooked for long in Portugal. It is probable that it is a new arrival in the country.
* Mecyna andalusica (Staudinger, 1880)
BA: Caldas de Manteigas, 19-VII-2007, Corley; Trinta, 21-VII-2007, Marabuto & Ferreira.

DREPANIDAE
Cilix algirica Leraut, 2006, (see LERAUT, 2006)
This species was described from Algeria with paratypes from Morocco; two specimens from
Portugal: Solheira [typographical error for Soalheira, and refers to MENDES (1902) record from BB:
São Fiel] are also mentioned, but were not included as paratypes because they showed small
differences from the North African material. We have additional Portuguese records. The specimens
do not show significant differences from Leraut’s figures. AAL: Carvoeiro, Portalegre, 8-IX-1996
Corley; BL: Casmilo, 13-V-2006, Corley & Pires and 8-IX-2006, Corley, Marabuto & Pires; BB:

ALG: Resilveira, 1-X-1998, Corley; BB: Almaceda, 7-IX-2007 Pires, conf. P. Skou. This species
was recorded from Algarve (CORLEY et al., 2000) based on the record from Resilveira cited above
and Carvalho specimens from São Romão, which were later re-determined as C. tusciaria
(Borkhausen, 1793) (CORLEY, 2005), but regrettably not all material was adequately re-examined at
the time, resulting in the erroneous deletion of the species from the Portuguese list. Known from
Spain and North Africa. [Larva on Juniperus, but almost certainly on a range of shrubs].
Cleora cinctaria (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775)
Third Portuguese record. TM: Barragem da Serra Serrada, 15-V-2007, Corley. Previously

describing one new species, M. herminiella, and adding one species for Portugal.
CORLEY, MARABUTO & PIRES (2007) add 75 species to the Portuguese list, and delete two
others.
LANGMAID & CORLEY (2007) describe a new species of Phyllocnistis Zeller (Gracillariidae),
P. ramulicola, and correct an earlier misidentification.
LASTUVKA & LASTUVKA (2007a) describe new species of Trifurcula subgenus Glaucolepis
(Nepticulidae) from Southern Europe, one of which, T. corleyi, occurs in Portugal.
LASTUVKA & LASTUVKA (2007b) describe a new subspecies of Pyropteron muscaeformis
(Esper, 1783) with holotype from Serra da Estrela.
PIRES & CORLEY (2007) list Lepidoptera found in the lower Mondego Valley, including 28
species new for Portugal.
SPEIDEL, NIEUKERKEN, HONEY & KOSTER [2006] (2007) summarise recent Western
Palaearctic records of the oriental moth Diplopseustis perieresalis (Walker, 1859) (Crambidae). The
earliest known Palaearctic record is from Algarve in 2000.
STÜBNER (2007) revises one group of the genus Coleophora Hübner (Coleophoridae).

Spanish populations of Chondrostega LEDERER, 1857 are examined based on external and internal morphology as well as molecular data from the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene (COI). According to relevant diagnostic features and genetic differentiation, two species with allopatric distribution are recognized within the Iberian Peninsula. Andalusian populations, here described as Chondrostega escobesae sp. nov., are compared to the closely related Chondrostega vandalicia (Millière, 1865), which is limited to the northern half of the Iberian Peninsula. They can be recognized by largely constant morphological features such as a different pattern on the underside of the wings of the male, adult male genital structure, different structure of the canthus and the colour of hairs in the final instars. Phylogenetic analyses based on COI identify the two species as sister clades with a minimum genetic divergence of 3.8 %. Adults, including the apterous females, immature stages, larval host plants and natural habitat are described and illustrated. A neotype is designated for C. vandalicia.

The records of seven Nepticulidae species new to the Iberian Penisula are given. Five of them are new to Spain, viz. Parafomoria fumanae Laštůvka & Lǎtůvka, 2005, Bohemannia pulverosella (Stainton, 1849), Ectoedemia (Etainia) decentella (Herrich-Schäffer, 1855), E. (Ectoedemia) intimella (Zeller, 1848), and E. (E.) contorta Nieukerken, 1985, and the following two species are new to Portugal: Trifurcula (Trifurcula) orientella Klimesch, 1953, and Parafomoria tingitella (Walsingham, 1904), the latter being new to Europe. New province records are given of 38 species (58 new province records in all). Adults, genitalia, or leaf mines are illustrated in important cases.

In this volume, 268 species are covered. Many of the genera have caused serious problems in identification, but based on the larger number of specimens illustrated on the 25 colour plates, the species can now be identified much more easily. In additional black and white photos for species which are difficult to identify, differential characters are pointed out with arrows. As in the previously published volumes 1,2 and 4, maps with the European distribution are given with dots for verified specimens. There are photographs of male and female genitalia of all species and this volume also contains a systematic catalogue of the European species including those of the neighbouring regions of North Africa, Macaronesia, Turkey and the Middle East. This is the first volume including genetic information from DNA barcoding which proved to be a useful, additional tool in identification, taxonomy and species delimitation.

Details on the biology, distribution and classification of the complex of H. paradoxa Rambur, 1837 are presented. Recent field observations as well as rearings revealed supplementary information on Preimaginal instars, cocoon characters, habitat preference and foodplants. An account of the poorly known life cycle of the complex of H. paradoxa is given; larva, hibernaculum, cocoons of both genders, male antennal structure, larval host plants and characteristic habitats of its infraspecific taxa are illustrated. The paradoxa-complex is recognized as a group of localised populations in isolated colonies, which are in the process of speciation. They are ecologically well-adapted and do not move far from their natural habitat. It is restricted to Cantabria, the western half and centre of the Iberian peninsula, northern Portugal and Andalusia. A critical evaluation of reliable characters in the imagines of H. paradoxa and their biology revealed two apparently distinct subspecies: H. paradoxa paradoxa (a neotype ♂ is designated from Spain, Sierra Nevada, Pto. del Lobo, deposited in ZSM), and H. paradoxa bejarensis Chapman, 1902 stat. rev. from Central Spain. Both are shown to be geographically and thus reproductively isolated from each other. Another remarkable heterogeneity was found between H. paradoxa and populations of the Cantabrian mountain range. The morphological differences between these populations and the known samples of the complex of H. paradoxa as well as its ecological adaptation are interpreted as characterising a distinct species, herein described as H. yerayi sp. n. (holotype ♂ via CdFM in coll. Museum Witt, München, and eventually in ZSM). The relationship of H. jellaba de Freina, 2003 and H. rifensis de Freina, 2003 to the paradoxa-group is discussed. The taxon H. penella ucedinis Chapman, 1907 is shown to be a nomen dubium.

Synopsis In an earlier work, numerous changes to the Portuguese Lepidoptera list resulted from the study of museum and other old collections (Corley, 2008). Since then, further work has produced many additional changes. Ninety-three species can be deleted from the fauna because they are based on misidentifications or are otherwise doubtful; 35 species were previously listed from Portugal based on misidentified material, but the species are retained because there are later correctly identified records to replace them; 12 species are added to the fauna which have never been recorded before; 22 species that have never been re-found by recent workers are confirmed from old specimens.

Synopsis Examination of Lepidoptera collections made by various entomologists in Portugal between approximately 1880 and 1990, combined with study of the relevant literature, has produced results that considerably improve our knowledge of the Portuguese Lepidoptera fauna. Eighty-five species can be deleted from the fauna because they are based on certain or very probable misidentifications; 10 species were listed for Portugal on the basis of misidentified material, but reliable recent records exist as replacements; 13 species are added to the fauna which have never been recorded before, or were previously overlooked or treated as doubtful; 15 species must be deleted from the fauna because they are based on more or less questionable material that has suffered destruction by insect pests and therefore cannot be verified; 43 species that have never been found by recent workers in Portugal are confirmed from old specimens.

The widespread Oriental and Australian pyraloid moth Diplopseustis perieresalis (Walker, 1859), recently found once on the Scilly Isles, U.K., is here recorded for the first time from the Canary Islands, mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands and Portugal. Furthermore, we report an adventive record for The Netherlands. The species is probably established on the Canary Islands of La Gomera and Tenerife, where it may have been accidentally introduced by man, while records from the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands probably refer to adventive or migrating specimens. Species of Carex are possibly the larval host plant.
