Abstract

Kalimantan, one of Indonesia’s islands, is home to remarkable biodiversity and cultural wealth, as evident in the variety of plant species and the diverse local communities. However, this richness is under threat due to land conversion, overexploitation, and a lack of knowledge among the younger generation about the uses of these plants. As a result, conservation efforts are crucial. Global databases play a key role in conservation planning by providing essential information on species taxonomy, conservation status, and their ethnobotanical and economic uses, helping guide conservation actions. The Zingiberaceae family, commonly used in Kalimantan, can be studied through global databases. This plant family is widely used for medicinal purposes. A recent inventory study focused on the medicinal plants from the Zingiberaceae family endemic to Kalimantan. The research aimed to gather data from global databases on endemic species, their medicinal records, and additional information such as conservation status and sustainable use. The results revealed that 230 species of Zingiberaceae are endemic to Kalimantan, with the top five genera being Boesenbergia, Etlingera, Zingiber, Scaphochlamys, and Alpinia. Furthermore, only four of the 230 species have medicinal records, 37 have DNA barcoding data, 66% have been assessed by IUCN Redlist, and just 3% are conserved ex situ nationally. These findings serve as a foundation for future conservation and sustainable use studies, potentially benefiting national and global efforts.

This indigenous knowledge remains largely undocumented, primarily in oral form and only possessed by specific individuals. Therefore, this study aimed to record the Zingiberaceae species systematically applied for traditional medicine by the Dayak Tamambaloh Tribe, Kapuas Hulu District, Indonesia through a qualitative descriptive method. Data were collected from informants and recommendation sources through different stages including a literature study, semi-structured interviews, field observations, and documentation, for subsequent analysis using descriptive methods. The results showed that Labian Ira'ang Village inhabitants utilize eight Zingiberaceae species, namely lengkuas (Alpinia galanga), lalamas (A. nieuwenhuizii), kunus baute (Curcuma zedoaria), kunus kuning (C. longa), tantamu kuning (C. xanthorhiza), sakur (Kaempferia galanga), japa (Zingiber montanum), and laia (Z. officinale). Meanwhile, the tribe in Temau reported nine species, including lqngkuas (A. galanga), kunus baute (C. zedoaria), kunus (C. longa), tantamu kuning (C. xanthorhiza), katimbang (Etlingera coccinea), randar (Hornstedtia havilandii), sakur (K. galanga), japa (Z. montanum), and laiya (Z. officinale). The results show the same types of plants used by people in Labian Ira'ang and Temau Villages, although the processing methods and uses differ. The difference is due to different experiences in gaining knowledge about using plants as traditional medicine.

Indonesian threatened Zingiberaceae: Exploring their potential traditional and modern uses

As human populations continue to grow and natural habitats shrink, there is an urgent need to understand and protect plant species that have the potential to benefit both humans and the environment. Zingiberaceae is one such plant family with many species known has traditional and scientific uses. The family is primarily found in tropical regions, with the highest species diversity in Southeast Asia and South America. Indonesia is home to approximately 500 species of Zingiberaceae out of a global total of 1,500 species. However, more than 100 species of Zingiberaceae in Indonesia are threatened with extinction, mainly due to habitat loss by logging and land conversion, putting their potential uses at risk. This review explores the traditional and modern uses of threatened Zingiberaceae species in Indonesia based on their genus. We surveyed the literature and compiled data on the traditional uses of the Indonesian Zingiberaceae species as medicine and any scientific studies investigating their prospective as a drug. There is widespread utilization from a third of Zingiberaceae genera with threatened species, highlighting the substantial untapped potential that requires further investigation on the species facing a considerable risk of extinction. Unfortunately, efforts to conserve the threatened Zingiberaceae species are currently limited, with only less than ten per cent of species being conserved in Indonesian botanic gardens.

Inventorying medicinal orchid in Indonesia from global database

The global database plays an important role in preserving vital data and information that aids in the conservation and sustainable use of organisms, including plant species. Many data related to Orchidaceae as one of the largest families of flowering plant species are stored in global databases. An inventory study was done on the medicinal orchid species distributed in Indonesia from several global databases. This study aimed to acquire data from several global databases (i.e., POWO, MPNS, and IUCN REDLIST) related to what and where species are distributed in Indonesia, which species have medicinal records, and other information supporting conservation and sustainable use. The result showed six thousand orchid species with 200 genera in Indonesia. Bulbophyllum, Dendrobium, and Crepidium are the top five biggest genera. More than five thousand orchid species are endemic and distributed mainly in Papua, Kalimantan, and Jawa. About 130 orchid species have medicinal use; 115 orchid species are documented as medicinal plants worldwide, including 39 species recorded in Indonesia. IUCN Redlist has assessed 430 species, with 87 species included in IUCN Redlist species; one medicinal species listed as endangered species (Vanilla planifolia Andrews); and five species assessed as least concerned species. These findings could be important as a foundation for future conservation and sustainable use studies, not only in Indonesia but also in the world.

A DNA barcode reference library for the native woody seed plants of Japan

DNA barcode databases are increasingly available for a range of organisms, facilitating the wide application of DNA barcode-based studies. Here we announce the development of a comprehensive DNA barcode reference library of Japanese native woody seed plants representing 43 orders, 99 families, 303 genera and 834 species, and comprising 77.3% of the genera and 72.2% of the species of native woody seed plants in Japan. A total of 6216 plant specimens were collected from 223 sites across the subtropical, temperate, boreal and alpine biomes in Japan with most species represented by multiple accessions. This reference library utilized three chloroplast DNA regions (rbcL, trnH-psbA and matK) and consists of 14,403 barcode sequences. Individual regions varied in their identification rates, with species-level and genus-level rates for rbcL, trnH-psbA and matK based on blast being 57.4%/96.2%, 78.5%/99.1% and 67.8%/98.1%, respectively. Identification rates were higher using region combinations, with total species-level rates for two region combinations (rbcL & trnH-psbA, rbcL & matK and trnH-psbA & matK) ranging between 90.6% and 95.8%, and for all three regions being equal to 98.6%. Genus-level identification rates were even higher, ranging between 99.7% and 100% for two region combinations and being 100% for the three regions. These results indicate that this DNA barcode reference library is an effective resource for investigations of native woody seed plants in Japan using DNA barcodes and provides a useful template for the development of libraries for other components of the Japanese flora.

Plant identification includes or establishes the identity of a plant. Zingiberaceae is a perennial herba, which is the rhizome has an aromatic odor, Zingiberaceae has that swell like tubers with thick roots, and often have spaces filled with evaporated oil. Sambas Botanical Gardens area is a secondary forest designated as a conservation area, ex-situ collection of plants, animals in situ, swamp forest, lowland forest and riparian. The purpose of this study was to obtain data on the types of the Zingiberaceae family and the benefit of this research is to provide information on the types of the Zingiberaceae family in the Sambas Botanical Gardens. This research uses survey and flora exploration methods by observing each forest type plot. Plot measuring 40x100 m. The results of this study found 10 species consisting of 7 different genera with a total of 33 individuals, the species found consisted of: Alpinia galanga (L.) Willd, Amomum coriaceum R.M Sm, amomum sp, Elettariopsis curtisii Bak, Etlingera nasuta (K.Schum.) Kawasan Kebun Raya Sambas merupakan hutan sekunder diperuntukan sebagai area konservasi, koleksi tumbuhan ex situ, satwa secara in situ, memiliki hutan rawa, hutan dataran rendah dan riparian. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendapatkan data jenis-jenis famili Zingiberaceae Penelitian ini menggunakan metode survey dan eksplorasi flora dengan membuat plot pengamatan di setiap tipe hutan. Two new species of Boesenbergia (Zingiberaceae), from Sabah, Malaysia

Two new species of Boesenbergia , B. sugudensis sp. nov. and B. truncata sp. nov. were discovered in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. Boesenbergia sugudensis resembles B. imbakensis in that the leaf sheath of the plant is not thickened and in the anther thecae dehiscing by longitudinal slits, but differs in having a longer petiole and tubular calyx. Boesenbergia truncata resembles B. orbiculata by the short petiole and a bilobed calyx, but differs by the truncate leaf base, the acute leaf apex, opposite leaves with a narrower lamina parallel to the ground and anther thecae dehiscing by pores. The new species are described and illustrated in detail.

Endemic plants of Java Island, Indonesia: a dataset

Background: Java is the most populous island in the world. This high population and the extensive economic activities have significantly reduced the forest areas of the Island and have greatly increased the pressure on its plant diversity. Compared to those with a wide distribution, endemic plants with a narrow geographic range are more vulnerable to anthropogenic threats and environmental changes. As species lists are essential for knowledge of species diversity in areas with strong anthropogenic pressure, here we present a dataset of endemic plants of Java Island. The initial species list was manually extracted from the Plant of the World Online (POWO). Each species on the list was then confirmed for its endemism by checking its current distribution using peer-reviewed publications, online plant databases and herbarium specimen images stored on the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). The dataset contains 652 species in 279 genera and 85 families. The family with the highest number of endemic species is Orchidaceae (142 species), followed by Rubiaceae (57 species), Acanthaceae (40 species), Apocynaceae (35 species) and Lauraceae (29 species). The growth form of the species is mostly trees (22.6%), followed by herbs (19.2%), epiphytes (16%), shrubs (12.4%), vines (11%) and geophytes (9.4%). Most of the species (89.7%) have not yet been assessed for their conservation status according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria. There are only 55 species (8.3%) that have been conserved within ex situ collections. Furthermore, most of the species (79.8%) are not listed on the CITES appendices and there are only four species (0.6%) protected by national law. New information: Our contribution provides the first online list of accepted scientific names of Javan endemic plants species, together with all their synonyms. New to the dataset are: i) provision of local names of the species (if available), ii) the classification of species under eleven growth forms (tree, shrub, herb, annual, graminoid, geophyte, fern, vines, hydrophyte, parasite and epiphyte), iii) assignation of the extinction risk of species according to the IUCN Red List, iv) ex situ collection status of species and information on the protection status of the species according to (v) CITES and (vi) the national law of Indonesia.

The establishment of the Indonesian Botanic Gardens has shown significant progress over the past ten years, especially in the program of Regional Botanic Gardens. The Regional Botanical Gardens development program manifests LIPI's real contribution in applying science and technology for environmental sustainability and community welfare. The program also involves other agencies such as the Ministry of PUPR (Public Work and Housing), local government, universities, and the private sector. Developing the Regional Botanical Gardens includes three stages, including the planning stage, the development stage, and the management stage. A number of 43 botanical gardens have been built, 4 of which are in the planning stage, 20 are in development, and 19 are preparing for management. There are two challenges in establishing a regional botanical garden, originating from internal factors (Central Government) or external factors (Local Government). Fundamentally,the problem is commitments related to funding continuity, policy support, self-supporting infrastructure, infrastructure maintenance, and the involvement of other parties in the network. However, by looking at the increasing trend of botanical garden development, efforts to save Indonesian plant diversity are getting better

The research is Diversity of Medicinal Plants Families in the Community of Parepare City, South Sulawesi was conducted in Parepare city on September-October 2020. The ethnobotany research of the Parepare’s people to uncover the local knowledge of the community in utilizing the diversity of plants as medicinal plants. The method used in this research is interview, observation and documentation. Data was collected in four subdistricts in Parepare City, namely Ujung subdistrict, Soreang subdistrict, Bacukiki subdistrict and West Bacukiki subdistrict. The number of informants in this study were 100 people. Ethnobotany data collected in the form of community knowledge about natural resources of plants used as traditional medicinal ingredients. The Parepare’s people use 86 species of plants consisted of 40 families as medicinal materials. Zingiberaceae is the most widely uses species. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk memberikan informasi dengan mengidentifikasi mengenai manfaat tanaman dari famili Zingiberaceae terhadap imunomodulator untuk mencegah penyakit infeksi Corona Virus Disease-19 (COVID-19). Metode yang digunakan dalam penyusunan penelitian ini adalah metode kajian literature review. Data yang dikumpulkan berupa literatur primer dan sekunder serta mencantumkan 3 kata kunci yaitu: Zingiberaceae, imunomodulator, dan Corona Virus Disease-19 (COVID-19). Data dianalisis dengan cara mendeskripsikan aspek yang diteliti melalui mengindentifikasi, menilai, dan menginterpretasi dalam penelitian ini. Adapun hasil kajian dalam penelitian ini adalah bahwa tanaman famili Zingiberaceae seperti Zingiber officinale Var. Rubrum (Akar dan Rimpang), Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb (Rimpang), Curcuma domestica Linn (Rimpang), Kaemferia galanga L (Rimpang), memiliki aktivitas sebagai imunostimulan.
