Abstract

SWOT analysis is a classical analysis tool of competitive intelligence. The affect depends on whether all internal and external factors were analyzed. The construction of index system of SWOT analysis requires a lot of human resource. To resolve this issue, a method for computer aided index system establishment of SWOT analysis is proposed. This method can be automated extract and classify the key words. And the index system of SWOT analysis is generated by words classified information contained in words categories. In addition, the method can generate suggestions of indexes weight according to the amount, frequency and timing of key words contained in their classes.

Abstract. SWOT analysis is a classical analysis tool of competitive intelligence. The affect depends
on whether all internal and external factors were analyzed. The construction of index system of
SWOT analysis requires a lot of human resource. To resolve this issue, a method for computer aided
index system establishment of SWOT analysis is proposed. This method can be automated extract and
classify the key words. And the index system of SWOT analysis is generated by words classified
information contained in words categories. In addition, the method can generate suggestions of
indexes’ weight according to the amount, frequency and timing of key words contained in their
classes.
Introduction
SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis is a classic competitive
intelligence analysis tool proposed by Kenneth Richmond Andrews in his book “The Concept of
Corporate Strategy” in 1971[1].Starting from the whole target of analysis, SWOT analysis method
can clearly list the advantages, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the target implementation.
And target the affect that complexthe analysis. comprehensive amakes it factors Then
implementation will be clear. Policy-makers can clearly grasp the risks and opportunities of the target
implementation and may improve the accuracy of decisions. Therefore, SWOT analysis has become
the most commonly used analysis tool of the management and decision-making in modern
government departments and enterprises. It has been widely used and studied.
Since in 1970s, the researchers have raised several method SWOT analysis was proposed
improvement methods of SWOT analysis. Although these methods have diversification in SWOT
analysis theory and method, they follow the basic process of SWOT analysis. First of all, the method
in system should list the factors of Strengths, Weaknesses, construction SWOT of index

comprehensive and reasonable index system of SWOT analysis has decisive impact on SWOT
analysis and its improvements.
M. M. Helms [2] proposed that SWOT analysis was success or not depends on whether all internal
and external factors were analyzed. The analysis was time-consuming, many experts need to
participate in and reach the agreement and the process of analysis would be better if avoiding the
interference of personal experience, beliefs, skills from the senior managers or someone others. We
can make the conclusion that the SWOT analysis place high expectation on the analysts and the
experts can participate in or not will be the key element for the success of the SWOT analysis. In fact,
according to the implementation case of SWOT analysis, most SWOT analysis are in the similar way
that the experts list the analysis factors to classify and form the index system of SWOT analysis,
formulate the indexes’ weight and survey form and then do the research and score [3,4].
However, the human resources of experts are valuable. It has great possibility for government
departments and great enterprises to obtain the resources while the little possibility for the small
companies and individual entrepreneurs. There will have a problem that much smaller the corporation
is, the less capability has to bear the risk in decision. Small corporations may be fail in a loss in

This entry discusses what SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Threats, Opportunities) analysis is. Usually, a SWOT analysis is carried out when a company is developing a strategy. In the process, company planners evaluate the company׳s strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities during analysis. They seek to identify the most important factors in each dimension of analysis and eliminate less important alternatives. SWOT analysis is also applied in the public sector. Modern practice in the implementation of the SWOT provides for taking into account the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, and the role of technology.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the use of the strategic management tool, Strengths‐Weaknesses‐Opportunities‐Threats or SWOT analysis, and to assess how the methodology has been used as well as changes to the methodology. The findings both for and against SWOT analysis should lead to a balanced view of the technique as well as yield ideas for needed theory building. Design/methodology/approach Using the ABInform Global® database, academic peer‐reviewed articles were compiled indicating SWOT as one of the article's key index and search words. Findings The use of SWOT analysis continues to permeate the academic peer‐reviewed literature. Research supports SWOT analysis as a tool for planning purposes. Over the past decade, SWOT research has focused on analyzing organizations for recommended strategic actions. As a methodology for strategic positioning, SWOT analysis has been extended beyond companies to countries and industries and is used in virtually every published business case positioned for business student analysis. Additional use of SWOT is as teaching tools by consultants, trainers and educators. This paper provides a summary of the research studies and suggests paths for future research. Research limitations/implications This paper is limited to analyzing reports found in a selection of academic peer‐reviewed business journals. However, research implications for applying SWOT analysis provides a broad spectrum of industry analysis in North America, Europe, and Asia. Additional limitations are the need to link SWOT analysis to other strategic tools and methodologies for further theory building, since past research continues to lack quantifiable findings on the success of the SWOT analysis. Practical implications A fresh view of new directions and implementations for SWOT analysis, as well as other strategic planning tools that can be combined with SWOT, provides guidance for practitioners and policy makers alike. Originality/value The article adds value to the existing literature as the first summary of SWOT research indicating its uses and limitations. Support of its usage and place in the strategic literature is validated. The SWOT methodology is pervasive, in large part, due to its simplicity. In addition, the use of SWOT as a proven developmental, results‐oriented strategic planning tool is also extended, although further research leading to theory building is warranted and recommended.

Data analysis plays an indispensable role for understanding various phenomena. Cluster analysis, primitive exploration with little or no prior knowledge, consists of research developed across a wide variety of communities. The diversity, on one hand, equips us with many tools. On the other hand, the profusion of options causes confusion. We survey clustering algorithms for data sets appearing in statistics, computer science, and machine learning, and illustrate their applications in some benchmark data sets, the traveling salesman problem, and bioinformatics, a new field attracting intensive efforts. Several tightly related topics, proximity measure, and cluster validation, are also discussed.
