3. Results
The Use of Articial Intelligence in Diagnosing and Treating
Mental Disorders: The use of AI for diagnosing mental health
disorders has attracted considerable attention in recent years.
AI algorithms can analyze clinical and psychological data from
patients to identify patterns that assist in diagnosing mental
disorders, allowing for faster and more accurate diagnoses3.
These algorithms can analyze data such as medical history,
psychological test results, as well as patients’ behavior and
communication in order to identify signs of disorders such as
depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia4. In this way, AI can
assist doctors and mental health specialists in creating a more
personalized treatment plan for each patient. For example,
AI-supported platforms can analyze patient data and suggest
therapies and medications that may be more effective for each
individual patient, reducing the likelihood of using inappropriate
or ineffective treatments5.
AI Tools in Caring for Patients with Mental Health Issues: In
addition to its use in diagnosis, AI has the potential to provide
continuous monitoring and personalized treatment for patients
with mental health problems. Tools such as chatbots and
AI-based applications can offer ongoing support and counseling
to patients, helping them manage symptoms and feel supported
during difcult periods6. These platforms can offer cognitive-
behavioral therapy and allow for the monitoring and recording
of patients’ symptoms through an interactive and convenient
interface. Moreover, AI can be used to provide personalized
therapy by analyzing patients’ responses to different treatments
and suggesting changes to the treatment plan. In this way, AI
helps minimize the side effects of therapies and maximizes the
chance of success in treating mental disorders7.
Benets of AI in Managing Mental Disorders: One of the
greatest benets of using AI in managing mental health disorders
is its ability to offer a personalized approach to treatment. Every
patient has specic needs and symptoms, and the use of AI can
help determine the treatments that are most effective for each
individual. Furthermore, AI can provide continuous monitoring
and real-time assistance, helping patients manage their symptoms
and prevent treatment failures (Jin et al., 2023). Another benet
is the potential to reach more patients. By using AI-supported
applications and platforms, patients in remote areas or those who
lack access to healthcare services can have the opportunity to
receive necessary treatment and support, thereby bridging the
gap in healthcare availability2.
AI has the potential to signicantly transform the
management and treatment of mental health disorders. With
the ability to personalize treatment plans and offer continuous
support, AI can enhance patient outcomes and improve the
efciency of healthcare delivery. However, it is essential to
acknowledge the challenges, such as data privacy and the need
for appropriate oversight, to ensure the responsible and ethical
use of AI in mental health care. As this technology continues to
evolve, its integration into mental health services, particularly
in countries like Albania, offers signicant opportunities to
improve care for underserved populations, while also addressing
global healthcare challenges.
4. Discussion
Although AI offers many opportunities in the treatment and
management of mental health disorders, there are also several
challenges and concerns that need to be addressed. One of these
concerns is the protection of patient data privacy and security.
The use of sensitive data for treatment and diagnosis requires
strong data protection and reliable infrastructure for information
management8. It is also important that AI is used as a supportive
tool rather than a replacement for healthcare professionals. AI’s
assistance in treating mental health disorders should remain
a part of a collaborative treatment plan supervised by doctors
and psychologists who can offer personalized advice and
human support to patients3. In addition to these challenges, the
widespread adoption of AI in mental health care raises important
questions regarding accessibility, equity, and the need for
continuous monitoring of its effectiveness. AI has the potential to
reach underserved populations, including those in remote areas,
but it must be carefully implemented to ensure that it doesn’t
exacerbate existing disparities in healthcare access. For AI to be
truly effective, it needs to be integrated into mental health care
systems in a way that complements and strengthens the work of
healthcare professionals, ensuring that patients receive the best
possible care and support.

5. Conclusion
Articial Intelligence has the potential to bring about
signicant changes in how mental health disorders are treated
and managed. With the benets it offers, such as faster
diagnosis, personalized treatment, and continuous monitoring,
AI can help improve the quality of care for patients4. Its use
in Albania, however, requires coordinated efforts between
healthcare and technology institutions to ensure successful
and safe implementation6. Additionally, it is crucial to address
challenges such as data privacy, ethical concerns, and the need
for human oversight to ensure that AI’s integration into mental
health services is both effective and respectful of patients’
rights. Furthermore, AI should be used as a complementary
tool that enhances the work of healthcare professionals, rather
than replacing them. The collaboration between AI technologies
and mental health professionals can create more personalized,
effective, and accessible care solutions, ensuring that patients
receive comprehensive support tailored to their needs. The
successful adoption of AI in mental health care systems,
particularly in countries like Albania, holds immense promise
for improving patient outcomes and advancing healthcare on a
global scale.

Background Artificial intelligence (AI) has been increasingly recognized as a potential solution to address mental health service challenges by automating tasks and providing new forms of support. Objective This study is the first in a series which aims to estimate the current rates of AI technology use as well as perceived benefits, harms, and risks experienced by community members (CMs) and mental health professionals (MHPs). Methods This study involved 2 web-based surveys conducted in Australia. The surveys collected data on demographics, technology comfort, attitudes toward AI, specific AI use cases, and experiences of benefits and harms from AI use. Descriptive statistics were calculated, and thematic analysis of open-ended responses were conducted. Results The final sample consisted of 107 CMs and 86 MHPs. General attitudes toward AI varied, with CMs reporting neutral and MHPs reporting more positive attitudes. Regarding AI usage, 28% (30/108) of CMs used AI, primarily for quick support (18/30, 60%) and as a personal therapist (14/30, 47%). Among MHPs, 43% (37/86) used AI; mostly for research (24/37, 65%) and report writing (20/37, 54%). While the majority found AI to be generally beneficial (23/30, 77% of CMs and 34/37, 92% of MHPs), specific harms and concerns were experienced by 47% (14/30) of CMs and 51% (19/37) of MHPs. There was an equal mix of positive and negative sentiment toward the future of AI in mental health care in open feedback. Conclusions Commercial AI tools are increasingly being used by CMs and MHPs. Respondents believe AI will offer future advantages for mental health care in terms of accessibility, cost reduction, personalization, and work efficiency. However, they were equally concerned about reducing human connection, ethics, privacy and regulation, medical errors, potential for misuse, and data security. Despite the immense potential, integration into mental health systems must be approached with caution, addressing legal and ethical concerns while developing safeguards to mitigate potential harms. Future surveys are planned to track use and acceptability of AI and associated issues over time.
