Abstract

A nomenclatural synopsis of 62 names associated with Stachys recta group is presented. Nomenclatural notes are given for 23 names related to S. recta group that have not yet been typified, and for ten names previous typifications and holotype citations are summarized. Second-step typification is proposed for one name. For 28 names original material could not be traced. A neotype was proposed for S. recta and lectotypes are proposed for: Betonica annua var. hirsuta, S. albanica, S. arenariiformis, S. beckeana, S. fragilis f. serpentini, S. labiosa var. sarajevensis, S. linearifolia, S. parolinii, S. petrogena, S. recta subsp. baldaccii, S. r. subsp. b. var. chrysophaea, S. r. subsp. doerfleri, S. r. subsp. labiosa, S. r. subsp. olympica, S. r. subsp. rhodopaea, S. r. subsp. subcrenata, S. sendtneri, S. serpentini, S. sideritis, S. stenophylla, S. tetragona, S. zepcensis.

In this paper we suggest three new nomenclatural combinations and specify two new synonyms. There are five taxa (species and subspecies) of the vascular plants that are new for the flora of Serbia, and four species that have been confirmed for the flora of our country. Five plant taxa are a novelty for proper Serbia, Vojvodina, or Kosovo and Metohija, of which four are autochthonous and one is an allochthonous and invasive plant. There are twelve taxa whose presence in Serbia or in its territorial units has been refuted. the name Viola ×foliosa Čelak., which was proposed in the previous issue of this scientific journal, has been corrected to the currently accepted V. ×kerneri Wiesb.

According to the Herbarium of the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina (SARA), the Herzegovinian Centre of Endemism represents significant biodiversity of higher plants: 98 families, 460 genera, 1104 species, and 224 subspecies. Within this number, there are 156 endangered, as well as 96 endemic and 13 stenoendemic taxa. Forty-seven (47) registered nomenclatural types are a particular feature of the researched area. The Herbarium of the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina contributes a large amount of valuable and unique specimen data for future investigations. To access them quickly and make them available for scientific investigations, we must prioritize SARA's digitization and data sharing.

Stachys is traditionally accepted to present great taxonomic and nomenclatural complexity. It shows a wide range of variability that is difficult to define. In the present study, a taxonomic revision of Stachys sect. Olisia (Lamiaceae) in Turkey was presented. Stachys comprises 87 species (113 taxa) in Flora of Turkey, 58 of which (51%) are endemic to Turkey. Stachys sect. Olisia is represented by 14 species (20 taxa) in Turkey, of which S. distans var. distans is reported for the first time from Turkey, and S. annua subsp. annua var. lycaonica is synonymised to S. annua subsp. annua. Herein, morphological descriptions, diagnostic characters, detailed illustrations, distribution maps, IUCN threat categories and taxonomic comments are presented for all accepted taxa. Furthermore, identification keys are also included for the accepted Turkish species, subspecies and varieties in the section.

We provide information on the typification of the names of one genus (Lactucopsis), two sections (L. sect. Mulgediopsis, L. sect. Prenanthopsis), two unranked subgeneric names (Hieracium [unranked] Chlorocarpa, H. [unranked] Melanocarpa Sch), ten species (Dianthus moesiacus, Eryngium palmatum, Haplophyllum boissierianum, Hieracium schultzianum, Lactucopsis aurea, Lactucopsis brevirostris, Lactucopsis mulgedioides, Mulgedium sonchifolium, Picridium macrophyllum, Stachys anisochila), and one form (Gypsophila spergulifolia f. serbica) validly published in Roberto de Visiani and Josif Pančić's work Plantae Serbicae Rariores aut Novae— Decas III, published in 1870, and one variety (Knautia macedonica var. lyrophylla) published in Verzeichnis der in Serbien wildwachsenden Phanerogamen (1856). Additional nomenclatural notes deal with three other species, five new combinations, seven invalid names and one invalid combination that were also discussed or published in Visiani & Pančić (1870). Seven nomenclatural types for eight validly published taxa are designated here.

Stachys virgata, a rare Greek member of S. subsect. Rectae, was hitherto known from historical collections made in the north-eastern and southern parts of Peloponnisos, the last one dated in 1844. Its only recent record, on Poros Island in 1940, is not supported by a herbarium specimen. The species was rediscovered in 2005, 161 years after its last collection, and subsequently documented in 18 populations (1 of them now extinct) distributed along the eastern slopes of Mt. Parnonas and Mt. Madara in east Peloponnisos. We review the species’ description and distribution based on both historical records and recent collections, select a specimen deposited in the Natural History Museum, Paris (P) as a lectotype, and count its chromosome number, 2n = 34, for the first time. We evaluate the species’ taxonomic relationships and consider its threats and conservation status based on our own field work and several years of monitoring. S. virgata totals 355 mature plants and 12 out of its 18 populations comprise 20 plants or fewer. Based on the IUCN criteria, S. virgata falls under the Endangered (EN) category and specific conservation measures are proposed. Finally, we provide a key distinguishing S. virgata from the other Greek members of S. subsect. Rectae.

Lamioideae comprise the second-largest subfamily in Lamiaceae. Although considerable progress has recently been made in Lamioideae phylogenetics, the subfamily remains one of the most poorly investigated subfamilies in Lamiaceae. Here we present a taxonomic update of the subfamily based on earlier published data as well as 71 new DNA extracts from relevant in- and outgroup taxa, and DNA sequence data from four chloroplast regions (matK, rps16, trnL intron and trnL-F spacer). The phylogenetic positions of 10 out of 13 previously unplaced small or monotypic Asian lamioid genera and 37 additional lamioid species have been identified, and the classification is updated accordingly. Results from parsimony and Bayesian phylogenetic methods corroborate earlier results, but phylogenetic resolution as well as overall branch support are improved. All newly added genera are assigned to earlier established tribes or the new tribe Paraphlomideae Bendiksby, which includes Ajugoides, Matsumurella and Paraphlomis. Acanthoprasium is resurrected as a genus. Transfer of species is proposed to ac - commodate the monophyly of two genera (Lamium,Otostegia), whereas ten genera remain non-monophyletic (Ballota s. str., Lagopsis, Leonotis, Leonurus, Leucas, Microtoena, Phlomoides, Sideritis, Stachys, Thuspeinanta). Eriophyton and Stachyopsis have been included in Lamieae, Hypogomphia in Stachydeae, and Loxocalyx in Leonureae. Betonica, Colquhounia, Galeopsis, and Roylea remain unclassified at the tribal level. Lamium chinense and three East Asian Galeobdolon species are transferred to Matsumurella. Sulaimania and four Otostegia species are transferred to Moluccella . Alajja and three Lamium species are transferred to Eriophyton. In total, 14 new combinations are made, one at the rank of subgenus and 13 at the rank of species.

Stachydeae, comprising c. 470 species, are one of the most diverse and taxonomically puzzling groups in Lamioideae. In the present study, the phylogenetic relationships in the Eurystachys clade (a phylogenetic name for all genera attributed to Stachydeae except Melittis) were reconstructed utilizing nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences (nrETS, 5S-NTS) from 148 accessions in 12 genera. Our phylogenetic results recovered Stachys as paraphyletic with numerous traditionally recognized genera nested in it. A broadly defined Eurystachys clade, however, was monophyletic. Unlike previous studies, the present study was able to resolve the group into 12 well-supported clades, named here as (1) Eriostomum, (2) Stachys, (3) Prasium, (4) Setifolia, (5) Distantes, (6) Burgsdorfia, (7) Hesiodia, (8) Empedoclia, (9) Sideritis, (10) Marrubiastrum, (11) Swainsoniana and (12) Olisia. These 12 clades were formally named in a phylogenetic nomenclature for the Eurystachys clade. Several infrageneric units were retrieved as monophyletic, namely Sideritis sections Burgsdorfia, Empedoclia and Hesiodia, Sideritis subgenus Marrubiastrum and Stachys sections Eriostomum (including Stachys section Mucronata) and Setifolia. The findings of this study also provide the basis for a future formal classification, with two options: (1) splitting of the Eurystachys clade into 12 monophyletic genera, all of them based on pre-existing genus names and redefined to encompass additional taxa, but without clear morphological apomorphies; or (2) lumping of all segregates into a broadly defined Stachys, including widely recognized and well-defined segregates such as Prasium and Sideritis.

The names of the taxa belonging to Silene saxifraga group are discussed in this paper. An epitype is designated for Cucubalus alpestris as well as lectotypes are proposed for the following six validly published names: S. fruticulosa, S. hayekiana, S. multicaulis var. ottomanica, S. oreades, S. saxifraga subsp. balcanica and S. schmuckeri. A second-step lectotypification of Silene dionysii is also made, whereas previous typifications and holotype citations for the 16 names related to S. saxifraga group are summarized.

An annotated list of plant names published by Josif Pančić was prepared through review of original herbarium material and critical assessment of more recent taxonomic papers. Of the 226 names first used by this author, he claimed 168 as new taxa for science, including 116 new plant species. The analysis of validity has shown that 87 of Pančić's taxa, or more than one half (51.79%) are currently accepted, including 54 in specific and 11 in subspecific rank. Furthermore, 48 additional taxa were named in his honor by other authors. In this paper nine new synonyms and four nomenclatural novelties are proposed. © 2011-2015, Institute of Botany and Botanical Garden "Jevremovac".

An account is given of August Grisebach's journey through north-western Asia Minor ("Bithynia") and the interior of the Balkan Peninsula ("Rumelia") in 1839. Extensive collections were made in what is now north-west Turkey, northern Greece, the Republic of Makedonija, Kosovo and northern Albania. More than 300 new taxa were described in the Spicilegium, based primarily on Grisebach's own collections, but also on material gathered by others (Frivaldszky, Friedrichsthal, Pestalozza and others). These taxa are typified as far as possible, and notes on taxonomy, nomenclature and distribution are provided in most cases.

The division of the speciesStachys recta into four subspecies is proposed. Besides the nominate subspecies, subsp.grandiflora (Caruel) Arcangeli, subsp.subcrenata (Vis.) Briq. and the newly combinedS. recta subsp.rhodopaea (Vel.) Chrtek jun. are described. The last subspecies differs from the others mainly by the calyx shape (infundibular here) and by the calyx teeth which are about as long as the tube. It is distributed in Macedonia and Bulgaria. A determination key to the species of theS. recta group is provided.
