An Objection to Gallo and Setterfield (2023) Joan Robinson's historical time and the current state of Post Keynesian growth theory

Abstract

This is an objection to the thesis presented by Gallo and Setterfield (2023) Joan Robinson’s historical time and the current state of post-Keynesian growth theory, Cambridge Journal of Economics 47(5): 965–984. The authors recommend post-Keynesian economists to be satisfied by lower-level analyses regrading to what Robinson demanded as future form of economics analyses by the key words historical-time as opposed to logical time. I understand their attitude, because it seems there is no conspicuous success in the line she demanded after more than 40 years of her death. My objection is simple. New theory that is given its foundations by Shiozawa, Morioka, and Taniguchi (2019) Microfoundations of Evolutionary Economics, Springer Singapore (SMT hereafter), is totally free from equilibrium analysis which inevitably comprises logical time. The new theory has succeeded in overcoming retrograding nature of productions and now free from simultaneous determination of variables. Although the authors had not enough time to know this fact, higher-level investigation is now possible. This short paper is to inform all post-Keynesian economists that they have found a good example and resignation and defeatism like those proposed by Gallo and Setterfield are not more justified.
