Abstract

This research examines the strategies utilized by A24 to effectively merge conventional advertising with social media to promote the independent film Moonlight, attaining both economic and artistic success. In the modern digital media landscape, marked by swift changes, independent films often face challenges in achieving prominence in the mainstream market. This is mostly attributable to constrained resources and specific target demographics. This study conducts a comprehensive analysis of A24’s marketing strategy, emphasizing the company’s innovative integration of traditional media, such as cinema trailers and television advertisements, alongside social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram, aimed at expanding audience reach. This study, which combined current literature and a case study analysis, determined that A24 successfully combined the extensive influence of conventional media with the individualized, interactive characteristics of social media. This strategy markedly improved audience engagement, fostered cultural relevance, and optimized market visibility. The study indicates that the amalgamation of conventional and digital marketing tactics might effectively assist independent films in surmounting resource constraints, offering a significant framework for future independent film marketing strategies and industry practices.

Purpose: Data analytics techniques can help to predict movie success, as measured by box office sales or Oscar awards. Revenue prediction of a movie before its theatrical release is also an important indicator for attracting investors. While measures for predicting the success of a movie in box office sales and awards are widely missing, this study uses data analytics techniques to present a new measure for prediction of movies' financial success. Methodology: Data were collected by web-scraping and text mining. Classification and Regression Tree (CART), Random Forests, Conditional Forests, and Gradient Boosting were used and a model for prediction of movies' financial success proposed. Content strategy and generating high profile reviews with complex themes can add to controversy and increase the chance of nomination for major movie awards, including Oscars. Findings/Contribution: Findings show that data analytics is key to predicting the success of movies. Although predicting sales based on data available before the release remains a difficult endeavor, even with state-of-the-art analytics technologies, it potentially reduces the risk of investors, studios and other stakeholders to select successful film candidates and have them chosen before the production process starts. The contribution of this study is to develop a model for predicting box office sales and the chance of nomination for winning Oscars. 340 C. Bruneel et al. Practical Implications: Cinema managers and investors can use the proposed model as a guide for predicting movies' financial success.

Hudl was the first mover in connecting video and performance analysis to sports in the sports technology industry. They first appeared on the scene in 2006 and have experienced rapid growth in the past fourteen years. This paper analyzes Hudl’s position in the market by using Porter’s 5 Forces, PEST, and SWOT models. It identifies the company’s competitive advantage of an established brand reputation and user-friendly multi-sport software platform. Hudl’s current strategy is evaluated, and three potential recommendations to continue Hudl’s growth are discussed. The first recommendation is to enter into the new Esports market. The second recommendation is to increase Hudl’s international sports market reach, awareness, and products offered. The third recommendation is to create new video and analysis tools for sports that aren’t currently offered, which tend to be individual-based sports compared to team sports. The goal of these recommendations is to continue Hudl’s domination of the market and prevent stagnant growth.

New age media platforms have for long been embraced in film marketing activities as new means to reach an audience, build product awareness and create audience anticipation. However, current research on transmedia film marketing concerns mainly Hollywood film products destined to a wide audience and orchestrated by colossal marketing firms. In this article, all four new age media marketing activities represent low budget European films that attempt to exploit the new opportunities offered in the new digital environment. Our analysis reveals how in the case of independent film marketing the use of transmedia activities builds new narratives that adds to the story and communicate the key values of the film. However, in order to establish a deeper interactive relationship between film directors, producers and their niche audiences, a clear understanding of the targeted audience’s online behavioural pattern should be considered in the marketing actions design and implementation.
