Abstract

‘Feminism’ is a wide range of political movements, ideologies and social movements that share a common goal to define, establish, and achieve political, economic, personal and social equality of sexes. The underline premise of feminism is to seek women’s equality and justice in every sphere of life and create opportunities for women to have the same access to the resources that are otherwise freely available to men. Since, feminism covers diverse area of inquiry, dealing with the history of women’s oppression and possible means to overcome the ‘anxiety of authorship’ by establishing a literary canon of their own. Feminism is, indeed, a serious attempt to analyse, comprehend and clarify because there are numerous psychosocial and cultural constructs of feminity. This paper, nevertheless, is an attempt to outline some basic assumptions and tenets of feminism and trace the theoretical origin of the movement by exploring few trend setter works in the field of feminist literary theory.

Economic discrimination has been a major focus of gender research for the past several decades and such studies reveal a persistent gender wage gap. This study examines another aspect of the interaction between gender and the economy that has been largely ignored by social scientists—gender-based disparities in the cost of goods and services in the personal care industry. We examine prices charged for personal care products and services that are targeted toward women or men and find that women pay more than men for certain items and services. Our research suggests that although the differences are not uniform across types of services or products, women do tend to pay more than men for items such as deodorant, haircuts, and dry-cleaning. We suggest that such practices contribute to gender inequality by increasing women’s economic burden and reinforcing essentialist thinking about gender (i.e., that women and men are biologically different).

We investigate the congruence of brand image and package shape on product preferences, the moderating role of a creative mindset, and the underlying processes. Across four studies, we show that consumers generally prefer products with curved-shaped (versus angular-shaped) packaging for a “feminine” brand and prefer products with angular-shaped (versus curved-shaped) packaging for a “masculine” brand (Study 1a). This effect is mediated by the perceived congruence between brand image and package shape (Study 1b). We further demonstrate that the congruence effect is reversed when consumers adopt a creative (versus less creative) mindset (Study 2), since a creative mindset leads consumers to perceive curved-shaped packaging as more congruent with a masculine (versus feminine) brand and angular-shaped packaging as more congruent with a feminine (versus masculine) brand (Study 3).

Despite the widespread use of gender-based segmentation strategies by marketers, researchers have paid little attention to examining gender-based differences in the processing of pricing information. Utilizing the selectivity hypothesis, we posit that men and women process external reference price (ERP) information differently. We report evidence from four different studies that confirm the proposed gender-based differences for ERP processing. Compared to men, women pay more attention to ERPs, expend greater effort processing ERPs, display a better recall of ERPs, and evaluate deals more favorably when deals include ERP information. Implications for managerial practice as well as future research on pricing are discussed.
