The atrocious principle of male descendants in the male line for the Chrysanthemum Throne: it is
much more than mere discrimination against women.
By Hirokazu NISHIMURA (Tsukuba, Japan)
Abstract:This paper discusses how the worshippers of the principle of male descendants in the male
line for the Chrysanthemum Throne have made much efforts to sustain the unsustainable principle.
§1 The principle of male descendants in the male line is no longer sustainable.
The U.N. Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women on Tuesday
recommended that Japan revise its Imperial House Law to ensure gender equality. The committee
said the Imperial House Law, which allows only male descendants from the paternal line of the
Imperial Family to become Emperor, is "contrary to the object and purpose of the Convention.
Aside from philosophical discussions between those staunchly adhering to the agnatic principle
of male descendants in the male line on the one hand and those trying to get rid of it on the other,
we have to say that the principle is no longer sustainable, because concubines are no longer
admitted socially and the birth rate in Japan has declined steadily. Therefore the worshippers of the
principle of male descendants in the male line have to act illegally or unethically in several critical
occassions, and they have really acted so, as we will see. For genealogy of the Imperial Family, the

§4 Fertility harassment drove Empress Masako to develop an adjustment disorder.
Masako, who is now the empress, got married with the emperor Naruhito in 1993, when Masako
was an effective diplomat with five fluent languages (Japanese, English, Russian, French and
German), while Naruhito was a crown prince. Masako was expected to modernize the Imperial
House of Japan. On the contrary, fertility harassment and the like drove her to develop an
adjustment disorder to be so forced in December 2003 as to enter into a life of convalescence,
which continued more than a decade. In Japan, Hakuo Yanagisawa, who was then Minister of
Health, Labour and Welfare, told in January 2007 that women are child-producing machines.
Naruhito, who is well known to be gentle and prudent, told at press conference in May 2004 that It
is true that there were movements that denied Masako's career up to that point and the personality
that was based on it, which is called Hironomiya's rebellion (Hironomiya is the title for Naruhito).
