Abstract

This research examines conceptual metaphors as defined by Lakoff and Johnson, focusing on three types: structural, ontological, and orientational. The study analyzes an editorial from Goal.com titled, "Arsenal have no margin for error! Gunners told Liverpool showdown is 'must-win' in title race just eight games into 2024-25 season," using a qualitative approach grounded in cognitive semantic theory to explore the nuanced meanings conveyed through metaphor in sports commentary. Known for its in-depth and timely football analysis, Goal.com offers insights into how metaphors enhance fans' understanding of competitive sports narratives. Data collection involved close reading and note-taking, identifying instances of structural, ontological, and orientational metaphors, along with their source and target domains and image schemas. Findings reveal five structural metaphors, which use schemas such as Scale and Force to emphasize competitive intensity; four ontological metaphors, drawing on Container, Force, and Existence schemas to illustrate team pressures; and one orientational metaphor, using the Container schema to deepen spatial and relational context in the text. This study highlights the role of sports media metaphors in shaping public perception, making abstract concepts like competition and resilience more tangible. By framing sports challenges in relatable, high-stakes terms, these metaphors foster emotional engagement among fans, creating a shared understanding of a team's journey and pressures and underscoring the powerful influence of metaphor in sports narratives.

This article sets out to prove the potential existence, or otherwise of football-related conceptual metaphors in domains apart from war, specifically the scientific domain, with the objectives of identifying, categorizing and describing the metaphors, due to the research gap that exists concerning the lack of studies describing conceptual metaphors in non-war domains in football discourse. Both conventional methods of Lakoff and Johnson’s (Source-Mapping-Target) and an exceptional approach of classifying the metaphors into superordinates, subordinates and textual examples. Ten issues of two newspapers/publications in Nigeria: The Daily Trust and SportingSun, five each, were selected for the study. The Lakoff and Johnson’s Conceptual Metaphor Theory (1980) and the Metaphor Identification Procedure by Pragglejaz Group (2007) were utilized as the theoretical underpinnings. The identification of the metaphors was via the Revised Metaphor Identification Procedure, and the method of analysis was textual/discourse analysis, guided by the objectives. The results of the study presented four novel, i.e. not previously reported superordinates (or master metaphors), namely: geography, ornithology, physics and silviculture. The study identified the novel metaphors, categorized them into superordinates, sub-superordinates and subordinates, and established thematic domains and overarching implications amongst them. These ten (10) novel conceptual metaphors are, to the best of our research, had not been presented or reported anywhere before. Conclusively, conceptual metaphor discourse analysis is capable of yielding multitudes of novel superordinate, sub-superordinate and subordinate master metaphors. Thus, football-related conceptual metaphors are as novel as they are pervasive and diverse.

This study explores the use of conceptual metaphors in football news headlines in English and Arabic. It aims to find the similarities and/or differences between English and Arabic in respect of the identified metaphorical concepts. The corpus of the study consists of two samples: one in Arabic (n = 200) and another in English (n = 200). The metaphor identification procedure of Pragglejaz Group (2007) was used to identify the metaphors in the corpus. Two native speakers of Arabic and two native speakers of English assessed the researchers’ categorization and classification in the two samples. The findings revealed that the most predominant conceptual metaphor used in the English and Arabic headlines was FOOTBALL IS WAR and that there is a great similarity between the two languages in respect of the use of conceptual metaphors. The findings also indicate that the Arabic headlines tended to include a more metaphorical tune than the English ones. The study concludes with some implications for a better understanding of the connection between the two languages and their respective cultures.

The now-classic Metaphors We Live By changed our understanding of metaphor and its role in language and the mind. Metaphor, the authors explain, is a fundamental mechanism of mind, one that allows us to use what we know about our physical and social experience to provide understanding of countless other subjects. Because such metaphors structure our most basic understandings of our experience, they are "metaphors we live by"--metaphors that can shape our perceptions and actions without our ever noticing them. In this updated edition of Lakoff and Johnson's influential book, the authors supply an afterword surveying how their theory of metaphor has developed within the cognitive sciences to become central to the contemporary understanding of how we think and how we express our thoughts in language.
