As part of the SPP 2361 “On the way to the Fluvial Anthroposphere”, the project aims at gathering information about timing and dynamics of the complex interplay between man and fluvial environment in the Northern Franconian Alb (Bavaria, Germany). We aim at establishing a regional chronostratigraphic framework based on OSL-dating of fluvial deposits, which will help to relate sediment dynamics to settlement dynamics and provide information about the fluvial landscape evolution. Here we present luminescence characteristics, challenges we're dealing with and preliminary results of quartz OSL-dating.

[Show full abstract] study focuses on analyzing the sedimentary patterns of aeolian-fluvial interactions and their response to climate change in the Paiku Co basin of the southern Tibetan Plateau (TP). Through the examination of aeolian-fluvial sequences, Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating is utilized to establish a chronological framework. Furthermore, proxy indices are explored to identify potential sediment models and their reactions to climate change. The findings indicate that fluvial activity predominated during a relatively warm and wet period around 5.1–4.6 ka, while thicker aeolian sands accumulated extensively during 4.6–4.1 ka as the climate transitioned to cold and dry conditions. On a millennial scale, the aeolian-fluvial interaction sedimentation is characterized by alternating deposition of clay layers and medium to fine sand. This sedimentation pattern is predominantly influenced by climate change. Overall, the findings shed light on the complex coupling between aeolian and fluvial processes in response to past climate changes, which has important implications for understanding the landscape evolution and environmental changes in this sensitive high-altitude region.

We developed a new rule-based, cellular-automaton algorithm for predicting the hazard extent, sediment transport, and topographic change associated with the runout of a landslide. This algorithm, which we call MassWastingRunout (MWR), is coded in Python and implemented as a component for the package Landlab. MWR combines the functionality of simple runout algorithms used in landscape evolution ... [Show full abstract] and watershed sediment yield models with the predictive detail typical of runout models used for landslide inundation hazard mapping. An initial digital elevation model (DEM), a regolith depth map, and the location polygon of the landslide source area are the only inputs required to run MWR to model the entire runout process. Runout relies on the principle of mass conservation and a set of topographic rules and empirical formulas that govern erosion and deposition. For the purpose of facilitating rapid calibration to a site, MWR includes a calibration utility that uses an adaptive Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm to automatically calibrate the model to match observed runout extent, deposition, and erosion. Additionally, the calibration utility produces empirical probability density functions of each calibration parameter that can be used to inform probabilistic implementation of MWR. Here we use a series of synthetic terrains to demonstrate basic model response to topographic convergence and slope, test calibrated model performance relative to several observed landslides, and briefly demonstrate how MWR can be used to develop a probabilistic runout hazard map. A calibrated runout model may allow for region-specific and more insightful predictions of landslide impact on landscape morphology and watershed-scale sediment dynamics and should be further investigated in future modeling studies.

Dating drainage reversal using mineral provenance along the Yangsan Fault, South Korea

Tectonics is broadly accepted as one of the main factors controlling long-term landscape evolution. The impact of tectonics on short timescales is most often observed through earthquake rupturings that produce localized, metric-scale deformations. Therefore, linking instantaneous deformation to long-term morphological changes often involves a thought experiment with potentially limited temporal resolution. At a paleoseismological site along the slow-moving strike-slip Yangsan Fault in South Korea, we employed optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating and detrital zircon analysis on all exposed unconsolidated layers in trench walls. The results reveal a significant provenance shift in the sediments accumulating in the trench, indicating a major reorganization of the drainage network. Based on our OSL and detrital zircon data, we estimate that this change occurred around 70 ka. We propose that this drastic drainage reorganization was caused by a combination of very slow, yet continuous, earthquake activity and a temporary reduction in river erosion during the onset of the cold, dry spell characteristic of the MIS4 stage across the Korean Peninsula.

Translating deposition rates into erosion rates with landscape evolution modelling

Soil erosion is one of the main threats to agricultural food production due to the loss of fertile soil. Determination of erosion rates is essential to quantify the degree of land degradation, but it is inherently challenging to determine temporally dynamic erosion rates over agricultural time scales. [Show full abstract] by determining the last moment of daylight exposure of buried colluvial deposits. However, these deposition rates may differ substantially from the actual hillslope erosion rates. In this study, OSL-based deposition rates were converted to hillslope erosion rates through inverse modelling with soil-landscape evolution model ChronoLorica. This model integrates geochronological tracers into the simulations of soil mixing and redistribution. The model was applied to a kettle hole catchment in north-eastern Germany, which has been affected by tillage erosion over the last 5000 years. The initial shape of the landscape and the land use history are well-constrained, enabling accurate simulations of the landscape evolution that incorporate uncertainties in the model inputs. The calibrated model reveals an increase in erosion rates of almost to orders of magnitude from pre-historic ard ploughing up to recent intensive land management. The simulated rates match well with independent age controls from the same catchment. Uncertainty in the reconstructed initial landscape and land use histories had a minor influence of 12–16 % on the simulated rates. The simulations showed that the deposition rates were on average 1.5 higher than the erosion rates due to the ratio of erosional and depositional area. Recent artificial drainage and land reclamation have increased deposition rates up to five times the erosion rates, emphasizing the need of cautious interpretation of deposition rates as erosion proxies. This study demonstrates the suitability of ChronoLorica for upscaling experimental geochronological data to better understand landscape evolution in agricultural settings.
