Abstract

User-Centered Design (UCD) is a crucial approach in software development to ensure that the resulting product is user-friendly. However, the implementation of UCD within the software development lifecycle is still rarely discussed. This study aims to examine whether UCD can be integrated into the Waterfall model through the development of a web-based application. The integration process involves applying UCD during the requirements identification phase, followed by the other phases such as analysis, design, implementation, testing, and deployment. The research methods used include observation and interviews with the project implementers of the application development. The findings indicate that integrating UCD into the Waterfall model presents certain challenges, particularly due to the high risk of failure when the development phases do not allow returning to the initial phase that includes the UCD process. The interface evaluation conducted within the UCD process is proven to be crucial for the project's success.

MRT Mobile Application is used to access information easily and quickly for MRT users, such as schedule information, routes, stations, fares, and other additional services. Based on observations and questionnaires regarding the MRT mobile application, users often experience difficulties or obstacles in interacting with the application interface. Starting with a complex interface, confusing navigation of features to difficulty finding the information you need quickly. This affects the use of the application and reduces the level of user satisfaction. Based on these conditions, it is necessary to redesign the user interface of this application to make it easier to use. This research uses User Centered Design (UCD) method with four phases, which is Understand Context of Use, Specify User Requirements, Design Solution, and Evaluation Against Requirements in analyzing the UI/UX design process of the MRT mobile application. In the design stage, UCD principles are used to integrate insights from user data into UI/UX design process based on results of questionnaire analysis. The final result of this research is a prototype design and user interface design for the MRT mobile application that meets the expectations of application users.

User Centered Design is an important aspect of any product to evaluate its success in the market, where there is an abundance of product of similar functionalities. The software products are moving towards the phase where the end user can take the blocks of software, customize and build their own products. This adds more emphasize on the role of UCD in the product development. Many a time, the process for providing a good user experience is treated separate from the process of developing the product or software. There is an increased awareness that the two process need to integrate and proceed hand in hand for success of the product. This paper investigates and proposes the integration model for different development models with the User Centered Design process.

E-commerce is the activity of buying and selling goods or services carried out electronically via the internet, involving online transaction, payment and delivery processes. The Azzahra Hijab Medan Shop is one of the shops engaged in selling hijabs in Medan City which still uses a conventional shop model without utilizing e-commerce to support the sales system. The transaction process in this shop is still done manually, from customers selecting goods to recording transactions in a book. Customers from outside the area can place online orders via the WhatsApp service with the shop owner providing a product photo catalog in stages. Therefore, an e-commerce system is needed to support online sales. The User Centered Design (UCD) method is important in designing e-commerce, starting with involving the user context in the early stages of development and involving system testing, enabling the creation of an optimal and user-friendly design. With the implementation of this E-Commerce based sales system, it is hoped that it will facilitate sales with more efficient transactions, faster data processing, help sales of goods become more accurate, and make it easier for consumers to order products.

Edunex is the Learning Management System used in Institut Teknologi Bandung to support online and hybrid learning and teaching activities. However, there are still some improvements that could be implemented in order to further meet the users’ needs. To do so, the user-centered design approach is used. The development prioritizes implementing fixes in Homepage, My Courses, Exams, and Presences because those pages have high values towards users and high feasibility to fix. Besides that, based on the questionnaire that had been shared, there are needs for new features, such as Reminder and Tutorial that need to be implemented. The outcome of this project is a high-fidelity prototype of a website for desktop screens that fulfills usability and user experience goals effective to use, efficient to use, easy to learn, and helpful. The usability and user experience goals were measured using Completion Rate for effective to use, Single Ease Question (SEQ) for easy to learn, System Usability Scale (SUS) for efficient to use, and Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI) with value/usefulness subscale for helpful. After conducting the evaluation by usability testing, Completion Rate value of 100%, SEQ of 6,9 out of 7, SUS value of 90 out of 100, and IMI value/usefulness value of 6,7 per 7 are achieved. Based on those values, it could be concluded that the prototype designed has fulfilled the usability and user experience goals.

There are many systems that do not have an adequate level of usability, even though this is one of the most relevant quality attributes in software products. Therefore, it chooses to redesign these systems through techniques that provide favorable results in usability evaluations. Several authors have proposed the User-Centered Design framework as the right one to obtain optimal results with respect to metrics of this attribute, since it aims to design understandable software products, considering the needs and interests of end-users. Because of that, this article presents a systematic review to identify the techniques and tools that have been used to make redesigns of graphical user interfaces of software products following the User-Centered Design approach and that have been successful in usability measurements. It also shows the most reported usability evaluation methods in these cases, and the reasons why this process took place. A total of 146 studies were identified, of which 19 were selected as relevant to this review. According to the analysis, the most used technique to perform redesigns is prototyping and the usability evaluation method more employed is testing with users.

Background: The use of a nationwide medication plan has been promoted as an effective strategy to improve patient safety in Germany. However, the medication plan only exists as a paper-based version, which is related to several problems, that could be circumvented by an electronic alternative. Objective: The main objective of this study was to report on the development of a mobile interface concept to support the management of medication information. Methods: The human-centered design (UCD) process was chosen. First the context of use was analyzed, and personas and an interaction concept were designed. Next, a paper prototype was developed and evaluated by experts. Based on those results, a medium-fidelity prototype was created and assessed by seven end-users who performed a thinking-aloud test in combination with a questionnaire based on the System Usability Scale (SUS). Results: Initially for one persona/user type, an interface design concept was developed, which received an average SUS-Score of 92.1 in the user test. Usability problems have been solved so that the design concept could be fixed for a future implementation. Contribution: The approach of the UCD process and the methods involved can be applied by other researchers as a framework for the development of similar applications.

As the field of Usability Engineering gains more importance day by day, the phenomenon of testing the Usability of software and hardware products is becoming popular too. But, in presence of so many usability testing techniques, selecting an assessment parameter for performing usability testing is considered to be a great challenge for testers. The aim of this research is to suggest usability heuristics as an assessment parameter to Usability testing. To achieve the aim and objectives of this research, renowned Usability expert Jakob Nielsen's 10 Usability Heuristics have been chosen for assessing usability of some public sectors universities websites. In the second step, by using these Heuristics as an assessment parameter, Usability Survey and Heuristic Evaluation techniques are applied on these websites. It has been found that Heuristics are key attributes of software products and considered good measuring parameters to assess usability. Meanwhile this research is also a contribution towards rating the Usability of some academic websites. And hence, in this research, Usability Heuristics have been chosen as an assessment parameter for performing Usability Testing.

User-Centered Design (UCD) is a multidisciplinary design approach based on the active involvement of users to improve the understanding of user and task requirements, and the iteration of design and evaluation. It is widely considered the key to product usefulness and usability---an effective approach to overcoming the limitations of traditional system-centered design. Much has been written in the research literature about UCD. As further proof of internationally endorsed best practice, UCD processes are also defined in ISO documents, including ISO 13407 and the associated technical report, ISO TR 18529. Increasingly, UCD has become part of the cultural vernacular of the executives and managers who drive technology development in companies of all sizes.
