Marriage is an essential drama/trauma of life of all individuals, irrespective of gender. But, for women, it is harder, and in patriarchal society, like India, it is hardest. Every smallest thing of marriage creates anxiety for a woman, whether her colour, height or sight, or her education, choice or voice. Though, it is true that marriage bring changes in life. Again changes for women are all different from men and in patriarchal society, it is discriminative too. Initially women have to leave natal home not only with dreams of future, but with identity too. Right to life has been guaranteed by the Constitution under Art 21 to everyone. Right to life includes right to live with dignity. For married women, there is ‘emotional severances’, ‘patriarchal preferences’ ‘domestic significances’, ‘physical challenges’ ‘sexual obligations’ ‘silent consternations’ and ‘economic dependence’ in life. All this and more is part and parcel of married women’s life.
In this paper author has attempted to discuss about the plights of life of married women and its relation with the fundamental right of ‘right to life’ and also analyze legal protections and safeguards.
