Problem statement: A considerable number of secondary school students were involved in delinquent behavior and they are not doing well in school. School autho rities with the supervision of education department s and the Ministry of Education have done their best to guide and monitor students' discipline. Yet the problems related to misbehavior still occur in scho ols. A study was conducted on 113 at risk student s to examine whether parental factors could contribut e to their misbehavior problems. Approach: Interviews were conducted using open ended questions. Data were analyzed qualitatively using in vivo software to extract categories of parental influenc e. Results and Conclusion: Findings showed that the adolescents do have problems with their families in cluding lack of parental attention, communication problems and poor relationship between parents. The implications of the findings were discussed.

Imaginary audience behavior and perceptions of parents among a group of male delinquents and nondelinquent male and female adolescents were assessed. Each subject was administered the Imaginary Audience Scale and an author-designed inventory which measured perceived parental support. The results showed that the delinquents, compared to the nondelinquent males, expressed greater concern about the ... [Show full abstract] imaginary audience and had more negative perceptions of their fathers. Stronger concerns about the imaginary audience were positively correlated and negatively correlated with perceptions of low parental support among the delinquents and the male nondelinquents, respectively. The male nondelinquents also expressed greater concern than the female nondelinquents for the imaginary audience. Implications relating imaginary audience behavior and family relations to adolescent development are discussed.

A Test of Self‐Control Theory Across Different Socioeconomic Strata

The current investigation examined the relationships between family processes, self-control, and adolescent deviance in a sample of N = 3,764 Swiss male and female youth pursuing an apprenticeship (lower SES) or attending a Gymnasium/teacher's college (higher SES). Participants completed a questionnaire that included measures of family processes, self-control, and deviant behaviors. Results ... [Show full abstract] indicated that self-control predicted adolescent deviance in both groups, and that direct and indirect effects existed in the relationships between family processes, self-control, and deviance. Findings provided evidence of comparatively few differences in the observed associations by SES, though the magnitude of the positive effect by low self-control on deviance was more modest in male apprentices as compared to non-apprentices. Findings are discussed in terms of the implications for Self-Control Theory.

Perceived parental affection, supervision and adolescence adjustment in Bangladesh

The purpose of the present study was to explore whether there is any relation among parental affection, supervision, personal and social adjustment of adolescent in relation to gender, family structure and stages of adolescents. This study was conducted on 283 respondent's age range from 10 to 19 years. They were selected purposively from different areas of Chittagong district in Bangladesh. The ... [Show full abstract] Bangla version of family relation scale (Pervin, 2003) and adolescent adjustment scale (Sarkar & Khanam, 2008) were used to measure family relation and adjustment of adolescents. The findings of the present study showed that, female perceived more parental affection than male; male perceived more parental supervision than female. Family structure had no significantly effect on parental affection, supervision, personal and social adjustment. Result also indicated that middle and late adolescents had more personal adjustment than early adolescents and late adolescents showed more social adjustment than middle and early adolescents. And finally both parental affection and supervision were found positively correlated with social adjustment.

This study surveyed 181 parents of students enrolled in one of two early entrance programs at the University of Washington: the Early Entrance Program for students who entered before age 15 and the University of Washington Academy for Young Scholars for students who matriculated after Grade 10. The purpose was to understand parents' perspectives on the early entrance experience, including reasons ... [Show full abstract] for choosing early entrance, satisfaction with their children's program, perceived advantages and disadvantages of early entrance, and the effect of early entrance on family relationships. Ninety-five parents participated, with the majority reporting great satisfaction with multiple aspects of their and their children's experience. Early Entrance Program parents expressed a slightly higher degree of satisfaction than did Academy parents. This study suggests that early university entrance is an attractive option for parents willing to follow the lead of their talented and ambitious adolescents.
