Based on a literature review, this article provides an overview of the current
state of the discussion on the topic of “Landeskunde”, or cultural studies, in the
field of German as a foreign language. It examines the question of the significance
of this sub-discipline in the Japanese Gfl context and the extent to which
current Landeskunde concepts are received in teaching and research. The
paper shows that there is a need for and interest in cultural learning both in
educational policy and on the part of teachers, but that it is treated as a
secondary issue in teaching practice and in textbooks. Many of the modern,
cultural studies-oriented Landeskunde concepts are also applied in the
Japanese context, but the number of documented examples is still limited.
