This study investigates how doctors employ persuasion strategies (Ethos, logos, and pathos) on Instagram to influence the health behaviors of their followers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Analyzing three influential doctors on social media (DSMIs), the research applies Aristotle's persuasive strategies to understand how these doctors craft messages that drive behavior change and enhance COVID-19 awareness among their 581 followers. Employing a mixed methods approach within the pragmatism paradigm, the study utilizes interviews, literature reviews, content analysis, and surveys for comprehensive data collection. The study reveals that approximately 41% of followers demonstrated a firm intention, with an additional 43% showing a solid intention to change their attitudes and behaviors. About 84% expressed a strong commitment to adopting a healthier lifestyle. The research also identified followers who initially had doubts or confusion about COVID-19 due to misinformation. However, it became convinced of its existence after following the DSMIs' posts, mainly through engaging video content. Engagement is more significant for video content than photos, with pathos, Ethos, and logos effectively fostering engagement. Around 52,438 (314,000) DSMI followers shifted from initial skepticism to meaningful positive attitude transformations, driven by successful engagement through pathos, Ethos, and logos. The study underscores the significance of delivering persuasive and appealing messages to influence behaviors positively. It suggests active social media participation can extend beyond the pandemic, fostering ongoing health awareness.

Background: Communication is an important clinical tool for the prevention and control of diseases, to advise and inform patients and the public, providing them with essential knowledge regarding healthcare and disease management. This study explored the experience of communication between healthcare professionals (HCPs) and people with long-term lung conditions, from the patient perspective. Methods: This qualitative study analyzed the experience of people with chronic lung disease, recruited via Asthma & Lung UK (A&LUK) and COPD research databases. A&LUK invited people who had expressed a desire to be involved in research associated with their condition via their Expert Patient Panel and associated patients' groups. Two focus group interviews (12 participants) and one individual interview (1 participant) were conducted. Thematic analysis was used for data analysis. Results: Two main themes were identified and we named them 'involving communication' and 'communication needs to be improved. 'They included seven subthemes: community-led support increased the patients' social interaction with peers; allied-HCP-led support increased patients' satisfaction; disliking being repeatedly asked the same basic information; feeling communication was unengaging, lacking personal specifics and the use of medical terminology and jargon. Conclusions: The study has identified what most matters in the process of communication with HCPs in people with long-term respiratory diseases of their healthcare management. The findings of the study can be used to improve the patient-healthcare professional relationship and facilitate a better communication flow in long-term healthcare management.

Purpose: Communicative participation poses a challenge in meetings between healthcare professionals (HCPs) and people with aphasia (PwA). How communication is affected by aphasia in group meetings, where several healthcare professionals participate together with the patient, is largely unexplored. The aim of this study was to investigate self-rated communicative participation during goal-setting meetings among PwA compared to patients without aphasia and to investigate whether communicative participation among PwA was associated with self-rated knowledge about aphasia among HCPs. A further aim was to investigate if there was a difference in the use of communication strategies among HCPs in the respective situations. Methods: Nine PwA and nine control patients without aphasia rated their experience of communication during a goal-setting meeting. Thirty-eight HCPs rated their knowledge about aphasia and communication, and their use of communication strategies during goal-setting meetings. Results: The PwA reported being listened to by the HCPs as well as being able to comprehend the meeting. PwA with more severe language impairment did not report a lower level of communicative participation compared to PwA with milder impairment. Half of the patients from both groups indicated some difficulty asking questions during the meeting. Patients' ratings of communication were not correlated to HCPs' knowledge of communication strategies. There was a significant difference in self-rated use of communication strategies among HCPs for the two conditions, although the individual variation was large. Conclusion: Results from both PwA and controls imply that patients may need more support to be able to ask questions in meetings with HCPs. Although self-ratings increase the ecological validity of the study of participation, further studies could benefit from using video observations in combination with self-reported experience, since awareness might influence results. What this paper ads: What is already known on this subject Aphasia is an acquired language disorder that affects patient-provider communication. In stroke rehabilitation, person-centred goal setting is a key component. If healthcare professionals (HCPs) are not able to use adequate communication strategies, a lack of accessible communication can become a barrier to person-centredness. There are evidence-based communication strategies which can be used to overcome this barrier. What this paper adds to existing knowledge This study aimed to investigate communicative participation during goal-setting meetings from the perspective of patients with aphasia and HCPs. To our knowledge, this is the first study where persons with aphasia are asked to rate communicative participation in goal-setting meetings. To broaden the perspective on communication and goal setting, ratings of patients with aphasia are compared to ratings by patients with stroke but no aphasia. The results of this study indicate that there is room for improvement regarding communication during goal-setting meetings. However, asking direct questions on communicative participation to persons with severe aphasia may not be feasible. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work? The results of this study imply that both patients with and without aphasia may need more support to be able to express themselves during goal-setting meetings. There also seems to be a need for further education on aphasia and communication strategies among rehabilitation professionals.

Background: The coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak has caused public fear alongside social stigma and discrimination. As a result, people hide the illness to avoid discrimination. This study focuses on investigating doctor-patient communication, their challenges when diagnosing suspected COVID-19 patients, and how the physicians communicated with patients’ mental issues. Methods: A mixed-methods approach examined this phenomenon and an online survey was conducted among 221 Indonesian doctors. The following were quantitatively examined: theme of Covid stigma and patient openness, patient/physician interaction and communication, and information and stigmatization of Covid. Qualitatively, two Focus Group Discussions (FGD) were conducted with five physicians and four COVID-19 survivors or their family members. Thereafter, interviews were set up with the selected four persons. Results: 74.2% of respondents encountered patients with lack of honesty or openness, while 55% of physicians claimed that 1-2 patients out of every 10 patients covered up about their illness. 27% of physicians indicated that 3-5 of 10 patients did not tell the truth. Majority of respondents opined that the media/social media played a large role in the promotion of stigma for those who had COVID-19. Conclusion: Study results affirmed belief in a link between the stigma of COVID-19 and patients’ dishonesty. Results indicated that many individuals are reluctant to disclose their true positions for fear of stigmatization by the people around them. This is linked to the stigma of COVID-19 and patient reluctance to be honest about their health/illness per impact of COVID-19. This research concluded that doctors need to find creative ways to communicate with their patients so as to increase patient honesty about illness.

What started as a cluster of patients with a mysterious respiratory illness in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, was later determined to be coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‑19). The pathogen severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‑CoV‑2), a novel Betacoronavirus, was subsequently isolated as the causative agent. SARS‑CoV‑2 is transmitted by respiratory droplets and fomites and presents clinically with fever, fatigue, myalgias, conjunctivitis, anosmia, dysgeusia, sore throat, nasal congestion, cough, dyspnea, nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea. In most critical cases, symptoms can escalate into acute respiratory distress syndrome accompanied by a runaway inflammatory cytokine response and multiorgan failure. As of this article’s publication date, COVID‑19 has spread to approximately 200 countries and territories, with over 4.3 million infections and more than 290,000 deaths as it has escalated into a global pandemic. Public health concerns mount as the situation evolves with an increasing number of infection hotspots around the globe. New information about the virus is emerging just as rapidly. This has led to the prompt development of clinical patient risk stratification tools to aid in determining the need for testing, isolation, monitoring, ventilator support, and disposition. COVID‑19 spread is rapid, including imported cases in travelers, cases among close contacts of known infected individuals, and community‑acquired cases without a readily identifiable source of infection. Critical shortages of personal protective equipment and ventilators are compounding the stress on overburdened healthcare systems. The continued challenges of social distancing, containment, isolation, and surge capacity in already stressed hospitals, clinics, and emergency departments have led to a swell in technologically‑assisted care delivery strategies, such as telemedicine and web‑based triage. As the race to develop an effective vaccine intensifies, several clinical trials of antivirals and immune modulators are underway, though no reliable COVID‑19‑specific therapeutics (inclusive of some potentially effective single and multi-drug regimens) have been identified as of yet. With many nations and regions declaring a state of emergency, unprecedented quarantine, social distancing, and border closing efforts are underway. Implementation of social and physical isolation measures has caused sudden and profound economic hardship, with marked decreases in global trade and local small business activity alike, and full ramifications likely yet to be felt. Current state‑of‑science, mitigation strategies, possible therapies, ethical considerations for healthcare workers and policymakers, as well as lessons learned for this evolving global threat and the eventual return to a “new normal” are discussed in this article. Keywords: 2019‑nCoV, coronavirus, COVID‑19, global impact, International Health Security, pandemic, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2

Introduction: Smartphones are ubiquitous in the digital society. Although this powerful device is useful because it supports and simplifies many tasks in everyday life, a growing number of researchers is concerned that smartphones might have detrimental effects on the human brain and related psychological processes. Evidence indicates that social media platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook are essential drivers of smartphone usage. Thus, a critical, yet unexplored issue is how excessive use of those platforms is related to Smartphone Use Disorder (SUD). Furthermore, since the roles of life satisfaction and fear of missing out (FoMo) have been demonstrated to be of particular importance for Internet Use and Internet Communication Disorder, those constructs were examined in the context of SUD. Methods: In total, n = 2299 participants filled in questionnaires assessing SUD, WhatsApp and Facebook Use Disorder, FoMO, life satisfaction, and reported owning a WhatsApp and Facebook account. Results: The study revealed that SUD was linked to WhatsApp Use Disorder, and to a lesser extent, to Facebook Use Disorder. Associations between SUD and WhatsApp Use Disorder were most strongly pronounced in females. Additionally, FoMo predicted SUD, WhatsApp, Facebook Use Disorder, and (fully) mediated the relationship between life satisfaction and those variables. Conclusion: The findings of the present study suggest that WhatsApp use plays an important role to understand SUD. Regarding the mediating role of FoMO, the present work might help disentangle inconsistent results on the link between life satisfaction and (excessive) social networking sites use.

Purpose: Promoting health literacy, i.e. the ability to access, collect, understand, and use health-related information, is high on the health policy agenda across the World. The digitization of healthcare calls for a reframing of health literacy in the cyber-physical environment. The article systematizes current scientific knowledge about digital health literacy and investigates the role of healthcare organizations in delivering health literate healthcare services in a digital environment. Methodology: A literature review was accomplished. A targeted query to collect relevant scientific contributions was run on PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. A narrative approach was undertaken to summarize the study findings and to envision avenues for further development in the field of digital health literacy. Findings: Digital health literacy has distinguishing attributes as compared with health literacy. Patients may suffer from a lack of human touch when they access digital health services. This may impair their ability to collect health information and to use it appropriately to co-create value and to co-produce health promotion and risk prevention services. Healthcare organizations should strive for increasing the patients’ ability to navigate the digital healthcare environment, boosting the latter’s value co-creation capability. Practical implications. Tailored solutions should be designed to promote digital health literacy at the individual and organizational levels. On the one hand, attention should be paid to the patients’ special digital health information needs, avoiding flaws in their ability to contribute to health services’ co-production. On the other hand, healthcare providers should be involved in the design of user-friendly e-health solutions, which are directed to engage people in value co-creation. Originality/value. This article attempts to systematize extant scientific knowledge in the field of digital health literacy with a specific focus on the strategies and initiatives that healthcare organizations may take to cope with the pandemic of limited digital health literacy.
