Abstract

The author expresses a hypothesis about the resistance in SDOF mass systems, which leads to energy dissipation. The concept of a third derivative of the movement in time (jerk) and a dimensionless quantity of it is applied. On this basis, a homogeneous differential equation of motion in free vibration was compiled and solved. A comprehensive mathematical analysis was performed to clarify the influence of the two ratios that determine the motion of a mass system. Numerical examples show how the values of the dimensionless ratios can be determined through experimental results.
