Abstract

The relevance of the topic is due to the need to resolve the contradiction between the requirements of the current educational standards for the training level of rural school teachers who are able to carry out educational activities among the rural population and the insufficient formation of general and professional competencies of graduates of the pedagogical college for this type of socially significant activity. The purpose of the research is to theoretically substantiate and experimentally verify the effectiveness of the process of pedagogical college students’ competencies formation in organizing educational activities in a rural environment. The authors have specificated the basic concepts of the research based on the analysis of a number of normative legal documents, sources of psychological, pedagogical and methodological literature, as well as generalization of the pedagogical experience of practicing teachers. Students’ mastering of the educational activity essence and its organization in a rural environment is considered as a purposeful, specially organized process of acquiring subject-methodical knowledge, subject-practical and subject-methodical skills in a phased work. It is shown that clear planning, competent organization and constant monitoring of the tasks at each stage of the students’ work contributes to the achievement of high experimental results and provides positive dynamics in the formation of pedagogical college students’ competencies in organizing educational activities in rural environments. The reliability of the provisions and ideas highlighted in the research is supported by the results of experimental work. The authors conclude that it is important to increase the level of methodological competence of practicing teachers of rural areas on the design of educational events / programs / actions for different categories of villagers. In conclusion, the necessity of regular exchange of experience between teachers working in rural schools, as well as their cooperation with experienced teachers from urban schools and specialized educational institutions on education issues, is substantiated.

This chapter focuses on teaching practices used in multigrade classes and the importance of them being incorporated in teacher education as promising pedagogies for future use. Multigrade classes - defined as classes in which two or more grades are taught together - are common worldwide. Hence, there is a need for teacher candidates to become familiar with how to teach in split grade classrooms. However, research on multigrade teaching as well as its development in teacher education studies has been neglected, even though multigrade teachers need special skills to organize instruction in their heterogeneous classrooms. We argue that in successful multigrade teaching practices, the heterogeneity of students is taken into account and cultivated. Based on content analysis of teacher interviews conducted in Austrian and Finnish primary schools, we recommend teaching practices such as spiral curricula, working plans, and peer learning as promising teacher education pedagogies for future multigrade class teaching. We also suggest that the professional skills required in high-quality teaching practices in multigrade teaching should be further studied by researchers and educators.

This article considers school as a place narrated by students. The goal is to understand students’ experiences of their school as a place through the ‘sense of place.’ The empirical data was collected at a small village school in northern Finland during one week of ethnographic observation, which involved interviewing students, collecting students’ writings, and observing teaching. Using content analysis and narrative analysis, three types of narratives were analyzed: One, narratives of relations in place describe students’ experience of their school as a familiar, safe, peaceful place. Two, narratives of action in place emphasize that sense of place is based on places of common action and belonging, for example, in the schoolyard, in the school’s surroundings and environment, on school trips, and during school festivities. Three, narratives of self in place give insights into friendships at a small school. A small school enables close, long-lasting friendships, strengthening the sense of place. Students who switch schools may have difficulties adjusting to tight groups of students; those difficulties may produce feelings of being an outsider. This article also aims to introduce the significance of place in discussions concerning school politics and didactics. An evaluation of the significance of school as a place from the children’s point of view is suggested as a new perspective for discussions and decision-making regarding school closures. This new perspective should focus on how schools as places support children’s growth and development and how an understanding of schools as places can be used to increase children’s enjoyment of school.
