REMARKABLE LATE CRETACEOUS FOSSILS FROM LIÈGE-LIMBURG
Part 54. Remains of the mysterious teleost fish Cylindracanthus.
Remains of the enigmatic teleost fish Cylindracanthus, originating from the upper Maastrichtian (Lanaye to Emael members) of the Maastrichtian type area (south-east Netherlands, north-east Belgium), are described and illustrated. The current fossil record of this genus in the study area comprises merely the elongated, ornamented and pointed rostra of these fishes. These have inspired long-standing debates about the taxonomy and anatomy of Cylindracanthus. For now, these fish
are considered by some to be most closely related to sturgeons and their relatives (Acipenseriformes). Specimens referred to the genus Cylindracanthus are briefly compared to other teleost fishes from the type-Maastrichtian strata with elongated rostra, such as members of the family Dercetidae.
