STUDENTS’ WRITING SKILL IN USING COHESION AND COHERENCE ON DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY

Abstract

This research aimed to know how students’ skill in writing descriptive essay and what types of cohesion and the ways to achieve coherence used on descriptive essay. It was quantitative research. Total sample was 36 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used a writing test. Writing components were used to analyze data; Content, Organization, Vocabulary, Language Use, Mechanic and then analyze the result of the types cohesion. The findings showed that the students' skill in writing descriptive essays was in the fair level with the score 69,31 with content 21.01 score had the fair to poor level, organization with 14.52 score had the good to average level, vocabulary with 14 score had good to average level, language use with 16.74 score had fair to poor level and in mechanics with 3.34 score had fair to poor level and the types of cohesion used were 60,50% used reference on their descriptive essay and followed by 31,55 % conjunction, 5,51 % substitution, 1,35 % reiteration, 0,96 % collocation, and 0.09 % ellipsis. Then, in the ways to achieve coherence also used 61,42 % repeating key nouns, 31,69% used consistent pronoun, 4,42% used transition signals to link ideas and 2,45% in arranging ideas in logical order. It meant that students were quite capable of writing descriptive essay and they had used all of the types of cohesion and the ways to achieve coherence but they still need to be improved.

em>This study was quantitatively conducted to discover whether Feedback Techniques had effect on students’ achievement in writing descriptive essay. By controlling the effect of vocabulary mastery, this study was also conducted to investigate the interaction effect of both independent variables. The population was grade X students of SMA Harapan I Medan 2010-2011 school year. There were eight classes. Each classes consisted of 35 students. Sample of this research was two classes divided into two groups representing the high and low level of vocabulary mastery. The first group was taught by using Peer Response Technique and the second was taught by using Teacher Response Technique. The data collected were analyzed with two ways analysis of variance (2x2 ANOVA). The findings indicated that (1) Peer Response and Teacher Response Techniques significantly affect students’ achievement in writing Descriptive Essay (Sig = 0.013<0.05). Students’ achievement in writing Descriptive taught by using Peer Response Technique is significantly higher than that of students’ taught by using Teacher Response Technique (76.8>74.8), (2) the achievement in writing Descriptive of the students with high vocabulary mastery is significantly higher than that of with low vocabulary mastery (79.8>71) and (3) There is an interaction between feedback techniques and vocabulary mastery to the students’ achievement in writing descriptive (0.002<0.05). Therefore, feedback techniques and students’ vocabulary mastery significantly affect the students’ achievement in writing descriptive. Based on the findings, it is suggested that feedback techniques should be applied in English instruction to develop the students’ writing achievement.</em

The purpose of the current study is to identify various types of cohesive devices and their usage in the selected news articles about the courts’ decision for British-born Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh who is convicted of killing US journalist Daniel Pearl; published in Tolo News and BBC News websites. The data is analysed based on the cohesion model proposed by Holiday and Hasan Cohesions are semantic connections or “relationships of meanings within the text that describe it as a text” (Halliday and Hasan, 1976). The findings of the study show that grammatical cohesive devices containing references, conjunctions, substitution and ellipsis as well as lexical cohesions involving repetitions and collocations were found in both news articles. Among other grammatical cohesive devices, references were found to be frequently used in both news articles while repetitions were the most frequently occurred cohesive devices among lexical cohesion. It can be concluded that all the mentioned cohesive devices employed in the text ultimately contributed to the meaning of the text by binding it in an organised way. It also has been observed that writers use cohesions to give a sense of connection and order to the text.

The present study explores the causes and factors behind high school students' academic writing challenges from teachers' perspectives. Hence, the study aims to identify the factors that hinder learners writing experiences, analyze them, and recommend solutions to bridge the gap. Also, it provides recommendations for teachers to take into account in their teaching practices.The study participants were 27 EFL graduate teachers specialized in English Language and Teaching from a private university in Istanbul. The study findings revealed that teachers faced many challenges when teaching writing to their students for various reasons. Some of these challenges were due to the lack of vocabulary, lack of motivation, weak grammar competence, coherence and cohesion, and curriculum-related problems. Other problems that teachers shared are related to the lack of clarity and focus of written assignments, demotivation of teachers, and time management among newbie teachers.

Purpose - This research aims to analyze the understanding of coherence and cohesion made by the 3rd year students of English education program on their academic writing at Islamic Institute of Bukittinggi. Design/methodology/approach - This was descriptive research which explains the phenomena concerns on the data due to field finding. This research applied for the library based work where the data was taken by using document analysis and interview. Findings - The result of the research showed that the numbers of students were still difficult to construct the idea cohesively and coherently. The result of the students’ understanding on coherence and cohesion showed that there were 59% students who were considered in need to improve and also followed by good work and could be better with 27% and 14% respectively. It can be explained that students were lack of ability to write the idea smoothly and grammatically correct. The interview result showed that there were three main reasons for this. Those are lack of motivation, limited lecture duration and prior English knowledge. Originality/value - coherence and cohesion are parts of academic writing that should be mastered by students in order to create a good thesis. Cohesion is the relation between one sentences and another sentence, it refers to the meaning in the sentence. Cohesion is divided into twotypes; grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion. This research analyzegrammatical and lexical cohesion types in the song lyric of Q1 Album by Gamaliel.The objectives of this research were to identify the kinds of grammatical and lexicalcohesion found in the song lyric and to know the most dominant type found.Descriptive qualitative method was used to classify and analyze the data. Thisresearch applied the theory of Halliday and Hasan to identify the types ofgrammatical and lexical cohesion. The researcher found 217 cohesion items whichconsist of 181 references, 1 substitution, and 16 conjunction in grammaticalcohesion. While in lexical cohesion, there are 11 reiteration (9 repetitions, 1synonym, and 1 general word) and 8 collocations. The most dominant type ofgrammatical cohesion is personal reference with 121 items or around 55.7% andrepetition with 9 items or around 4.1% in lexical cohesion.

This study aims to investigate cohesion and coherence in argumentative essays written by undergraduate students at Syekh Nurjati state Islamic institute of Cirebon, West Java, Indonesia. This study used discourse analysis as a research design. Five argumentative essays were chosen based on purposive sampling. The five argumentative essays were analyzed using Halliday and Matthiessen (2014) theory that contributing to the cohesion of the text, namely cohesive devices. Then, it was analyzed using Thornbury (2005) theory about coherence. The results of this study showed that undergraduate students at Syekh Nurjati state Islamic institute of Cirebon tend to use reference more frequently than the other grammatical cohesive devices. From 755 occurrences of grammatical cohesive devices which presented in the five argumentative essays, 532 of them were in the form of reference. Besides, they also tend to use repetition more often than the other lexical cohesive devices in their argumentative essay. It always present in the five argumentative essays. Furthermore, the thematic progressions were organized well. It is showed by the occurrence of two or more thematic progressions in each argumentative essay.

The main objective of this study was to improving students’ paragraph writing skill through task-based approach teaching methodology. To this end, the researcher made a quantitative research design to investigate the issue. To collect the necessary data for the study, experiment was employed as the main data collecting tool. Then, the data was analyzed using quantitative approaches. Accordingly, the researcher used different tables which shows the students’ pre-test and post-test results and changed into percentage. The study revealed that the students’ paragraph writing skill can develop by using task-based approach teaching methodology.
