The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by
the United Nations in 2015, have provided a
comprehensive roadmap for countries to navigate the
complexities of modern development while ensuring a
harmonious coexistence with our planet. In the context
of Malaysia, a nation characterised by its cultural
diversity, economic dynamism, and natural splendour,
the integration of sustainable development principles
has taken on a profound significance. The Technical and
Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector
particularly Malaysian polytechnics and community
colleges is a crucial arena in which these ideas are
actively promoted.

TVET, which emphasizes equipping individuals with practical skills, technical
knowledge, and holistic education, has emerged as a prerequisite for Malaysia's
sustainable development journey. The Malaysian polytechnics and community
colleges, renowned for their commitment to producing a skilled and adaptable
workforce, are pivotal in advancing the nation's development agenda. By aligning
their programs with the SDGs, these institutions have embraced the responsibility of
nurturing proficient professionals and responsible global citizens.
This book of proceedings explores the dynamic interplay between the Sustainable
Development Goals and TVET within the unique context of Malaysian polytechnics
and community colleges. It delves into the multifaceted efforts undertaken by these
institutions to integrate sustainable development principles into their curricula,
research endeavours, and community outreach initiatives. The exploration
encompasses a comprehensive overview of the various SDGs, highlighting their
relevance to the Malaysian landscape and the role of TVET in their realization.
In the following chapters, readers will embark on a journey that uncovers the
evolving narrative of sustainable development and TVET within Malaysian
polytechnics. This book of proceedings invites readers to embark on a voyage of
exploration, reflection, and inspiration as we explore the dynamic landscape of
sustainable development goals and TVET within Malaysian polytechnics and
community colleges.

When education is seen as a long-term endeavour, it
becomes clear that its purpose extends beyond
immediate academic achievements. As we gather the
collective wisdom of scholars, educators, and thought
leaders within higher education, this book of
proceedings stands as evidence of the pivotal role that
the Malaysian Polytechnic and Community College
Sustainability Award (MPCCSustAWARD23) holds in
shaping the landscape of our educational institutions. It
serves as an inspiration, shedding light on the
transformative power of collaborative efforts towards a
more sustainable future.

Higher education institutions hold an enormous amount of power not just in
shaping the minds of future generations, but also in steering the course of global
progress. The MPCCSustAWARD23 offers a unique platform, a connection where
ideas, research, and visionary initiatives converge to chart a roadmap towards
responsible and impactful environmental practices. The narratives composed within
these pages demonstrate a great dedication – a commitment to infuse sustainability
into the very fundamentals of our educational systems. Through innovative research,
holistic curriculum development, and strategic partnerships, these scholars and
educators have become pioneers of change, advocating for a more harmonious
coexistence between human ambition and the fragile ecosystems that cradle us.
These proceedings represents the symbiotic relationship between academia and
the broader world. It underscores the urgency of our responsibility the
responsibility to equip our students not only with the knowledge to thrive but also
with the wisdom to tread lightly and preserve the planet for generations yet unborn.
As we immerse ourselves in the narratives and accomplishments chronicled here,
let us be inspired by the collective pursuit of a greener, more sustainable future. Let
us recognize that higher education is not confined to lecture halls and laboratories,

The sustainable development of the global economy and society calls for the practice of the environmental, social and governance (ESG) principle. The ESG principle has been developed for 17 years following its formal proposal in 2004. Countries around the world continue to promote the coordinated development of the environment, society, and governance in accordance with the ESG principle. In order to review and summarize ESG research, this study takes the literature related to ESG research as the research object and presents the cooperation status, hot spots, and trends of ESG research with the help of the literature analysis tool CiteSpace. On the basis of quantitative analysis results, this study presents an examination and comprehensive summary of progress in the research into ESG combined with a systematic literature review. This includes the theoretical basis of ESG research, the interaction between the dimensions of ESG, the impact of ESG on the economic consequences, the risk prevention role of ESG, and ESG measurement. Based on the systematic summary of research progress, this paper further refines the characteristics of ESG research, reveals the shortcomings of ESG research, and propose a focus for ESG research in the future in order to provide a reference for academic research and the practice of ESG.

It is widely believed that the philosophical concept of ‘tabula rasa’ originates with Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding and refers to a state in which a child is as formless as a blank slate. Given that both these beliefs are entirely false, this article will examine why they have endured from the eighteenth century to the present. Attending to the history of philosophy, psychology, psychiatry and feminist scholarship it will be shown how the image of the tabula rasa has been used to signify an originary state of formlessness, against which discourses on the true nature of the human being can differentiate their position. The tabula rasa has operated less as a substantive position than as a whipping post. However, it will be noted that innovations in psychological theory over the past decade have begun to undermine such narratives by rendering unintelligible the idea of an ‘originary’ state of human nature.

In the drive to improve standards, the collection and dissemination of numerical data still directs much contemporary educational policy. However, recent publications and debates seemingly attempt to reorient discussion from performance to learning. In support, constructivism is often referenced as a contributor in this endeavour. However, constructivism is not a single unified theory either of knowledge or pedagogy. This article identifies one version of constructivist thinking, social constructivism, both in terms of its underlying epistemology (theory of knowledge) and related pedagogy. Contemporary educational theories are then outlined to demonstrate that many practical solutions and theoretical ideas now presented as ‘good learning and teaching’ have much in common with social constructivist thinking. Finally, the article concludes by identifying two issues that require further discussion and debate if pedagogy of a social constructivist nature is to be considered.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate if and to what extent environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices are influenced by innovation, measured by investment in research and development (R&D) and the number of patents developed by companies. Design/methodology/approach To test this hypothesis, the authors estimated a regression model for the panel data considering a time horizon of eight years. The analysis was conducted on a sample of listed firms operating in the industrial sector in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and the USA. Findings The empirical analysis shows that there is a positive and significant relationship between ESG practices and innovation. Companies investing more in R&D and patents have better ESG performance. Originality/value This study contributes to the existing literature by improving the understanding of the importance of innovation in improving ESG practices for firms in the industrial sector. Furthermore, it provides empirical evidence of the ability of innovation to be a valuable tool for sustainable industry development through R&D investment and patent development.
