A Case of Vulvo-Vaginal Myiasis Caused by Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Schiner 1862) (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) In A Dog
Abstract
A female Golden Retriever breed dog was brought to Hatay Mustafa Kemal University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Clinic with complaints of vaginal bleeding and discharge was examined. Vaginal examination revealed perforated mucosa extending from the caudal side of the vagina to the vulva, probably formed following perforating trauma. Vulvo-vaginal myiasis was detected by finding fly larvae settled in the mucosa. The fly larvae increased the severity of the perforation in the dog's vaginal mucosa and created a profound wound. To remove the larvae, the wound area was covered with gauze soaked in creolin. Seventy two larvae removed from the wound were collected by the clinician and transferred to the parasitology laboratory in 70% ethyl alcohol. The larvae were identified by the anterior and posterior stigmas and the morphological features of the cephalo-pharyngeal skeleton. Microscopic examination revealed that the larvae were third instar larvae of Wohlfahrtia magnifica. This study is the first case of vulvo-vaginal myiasis caused by W. magnifica in a dog in Türkiye.
